- “We were never friends. Is your madness attacking your common sense so badly or— oh well, I don’t even need to ask it. I’m not interested in a broken mind like yours, not anymore.”
[His comments brought Izaya’s guard up again, not liking where this was going. Was he acting too protective, too possessive over the one who mattered most?
Was he making his weakness that obvious? Stein didn’t stop with the rather annoying questions, and this one made Izaya stop whatever train of thought he was having.]
- “…What kind of stupid question is that?”
[Would he, really? It left a bitter taste in his mouth, the idea of dying to save someone so used to death. But if he really needed, would he make the sacrifice?
Would he throw himself over to his biggest fear, knowing it wasn’t really needed? Would Izaya save the albino if he really needed?
…]
- “I gave up on a lot of things already. If needed, I would protect him. This is a pointless question. The answer is already crystal clear.”
[That he would die protecting Naoya, no matter what it takes.]
"There you go again... ~ Hurting me so."
Sarcasm, of course.
No need to tell him what he already knows. As discouraging as it was, the good doctor knew that he wasn't all there.. His mind was indeed broken. There were times when he felt it would shatter completely.. But there was always someone there to pick up the pieces and attempt to put him back together, wasn't there? Yes...
Spirit...
Marie...
Where were they now? If he broke again... Who would pick up the pieces?
That wasn't important right now. He didn't need to be fixed. What was important was the man in front of him. Stein couldn't help but smirk at Izaya's reactions to his words.
"So you would die for him."
Laughter emitted from the man and he shook his head. "I wonder how that feels... Having so much affection for one person. Love. That's it right? You must love him... So much as to die for him..?" More laughter. "That's a little selfish, don't you think? To leave him alone. I may not understand these things all too well and I know you must be growing tired of my questions but... I must ask you this."
Stein's expression changed once more, a smile replacing the menacing smirk.
"Why? Why throw your life away for just one person?... Do you think he would do the same for you? Or do you think he would just let you die?"
