School life
“Is that what you usually ask people in the same situation as me? ‘Are you relieved’… your social skills could use some polishing, Orihara-kun.” Even far more straightforward than he had expected. Like a self-centered demon, the boy showed no restraint in his words nor in his curiosity. His boldness was an admirable trait in Naoya’s eyes but remained unfounded in a society based on reserved thoughts, tight lips and closed morals.
“But it’s just you and I. I don’t care for your opinion of me, not in the slightest.” Not even a speck of worry. Every so often, he spilled his secrets — to a stranger, to a close friend, to anyone with an close ear and an open mind. Just for the sake of it, of having someone know. Holding it in was painful — releasing it small sharp burst removed some of the tension held with in, even if it was only temporary.
“… Yes. I was. In the end, through their deaths, I got what I wanted.” He spoke his words simply, as he slid his textbooks into his bag. There was nothing telling about his words. No sadness. No anger. No emotion. He clasped the latch down and humored Izaya with an uncharacteristically warm smile.
“I’d take you up on that offer now.”
- "I was just asking a question."
[But the answer he got... it made Izaya even more confused, scarlet eyes matching with hues of the same color as his own, now tinted with curiosity. That was... something he was not expecting. An answer so honest, while others masked their true feelings behind sweet words and politeness.
For someone who observed humans for such a long time, someone who would break anything that he previously believed in... something so rare and charming, like the smile Naoya was giving to him now. This boy... Izaya had a feeling he was something else entirely.]
- "Let's go, then."
[To meet a kid who held no emotions regarding their parents death - no, one that acted like it was just as he planned... as the two started walking around school, Izaya was getting even more curious, as if he stepped upon the greatest challenge of it all. Humans would play pre-set roles, with answers that you could come up on your own upon some time observing them.
But not this boy.
It was so, so, so interesting! And there was still a question roaming in his mind and wanting to be asked. So be it.]
- "And what do you want then, Shirou-kun?"
