partiipris:
Akira gives his friend an expectant smile, foolishly hoping that for once, just once, Goro would satisfy his ego. But of course not- his smile drops into a pout as the words “you’re passable” leave Goro’s lips.
“Ah, how you wound me. It wouldn’t kill you to play along at least a little.” He followed in behind Goro and went behind the counter to put on the green apron that Sojiro had him wear while working here.
“ Yea it’s fine, he says it’s good practice. Now then-” Akira paused to jokingly fumble with a cup, as if to drop it on the floor and shatter it, before placing it down on the counter in front of Goro. “What can I get for you?”
Akira was being given a second chance to impress Goro and elicit a genuine compliment from him. He had been working hard to learn how to make a good cup of coffee under Sojiro’s tutelage, and had even gone out of his way to read up about it online and in books too. Sojiro did say that ladies love a guy who knows his coffee, so the Shujin student assumed that it should work just fine in this case too.
goro quietly laughs at akira’s pout, only for it to cut off as akira makes this show of fumbling the cup he’s holding, as if it’s about to fall to the floor. goro simply gives his friend a highly unimpressed look, then a sigh.
❝ well, i don’t know, ❞ he flatly says, moving to sit on one of the stools by the counter---third one nearest to the yellow payphone. he looks at the numerous jars neatly placed in the shelf behind akira, tilting his head to the side as he reads the label on every jar. well, they don’t make any sense to him.
goro is a coffee person, sure, but it’s probably pushing too far to say he knows anything technical about coffee. perhaps it’s better to say he’s more of an instant coffee person. that sounds about right.
he looks back at akira with a shrug. ❝ what will you recommend? ❞
