Throughout your life, you will be poked and prodded and used and lied to by people. Some will be strangers, some friends, and maybe some will be the ones you thought would never betray you, and end up being the very ones who tear you apart. These are the most painful of them all. It’s tough, but inevitable. Especially if you are kind and trusting, which I hope with all my heart that you are.
People are human; they make mistakes. Some will make honest mistakes, some are opportunists and take advantage of everything they can, and some are just borderline evil. Whatever they are, they will hurt you. They will cheat you. They will find your biggest fears and insecurities and use them against you. As much as I hate to think of that, it’s a horrible but important step in finding out what kind of a person you are. You will probably want to punch a lot of people, burn down some stuff and generally daydream about a lot of situations where you get your revenge while wearing the sexiest dress in the world and looking like an absolute fox. And that’s okay, in fact, it’s very normal. But please remember that although these things might temporarily make you feel better, ultimately they will steal your joy. Because fighting is a child’s solution to problems and pain. It’s easy.
I hope you choose forgiveness. It’s a much harder option but it is worth it. Forgiveness doesn’t make what that person did any less wrong. It doesn’t make it any less disgusting or any less unacceptably selfish or any less gut wrenchingly painful. It actually has nothing to do with them at all. It’s about keeping your good heart and not letting shit people and shit things turn your kindness and love into bitterness and hate.
Choose it every time. Every day. It is the only thing that will save you from being completely destroyed.
