My dog would literally rather puke from hunger than eat by herself 😭
Imagine you meet an alien that's entirely blood and fat. Like all the white blood cells and red blood cells and lipids kept in your body are just out there. That's their entire body, a blob of blood jelly. Even their brain is completely fluid. They constantly forget things and don't seem to notice the connection
They see electricity, the same electricity of your brain. If something is not charged they can't see anything at all, and a room of non-conductive objects would be a complete sensory deprecation chamber. They can see a little bit, but they are nearly blind and only use it to notice sudden changes. If you flash a light at them they scream. Instead they just bring a device that generates a charge everywhere they go. They claim their whole planet is charged, but you have doubts
This apparently allows them to see secrets of the universe. They knew about the big bang through out their entire history, because they can apparently just see the beginning of the universe. They find it beautiful, but not all that interesting. You are jealous
Despite being in space, they have not yet discovered steel or had the industrial revolution. It's basically still alchemists and philosophers, but the alchemy and philosophy works and got them to space. You are no longer jealous
They rely on the temperature being way below 40 degrees Fahrenheit so all the fat stays solid and frozen, and die if it's warm. They consider you burning
They get all their energy from air, like eating, to the point they cannot hold their breath at all. They get other things from food, but refuse to prepare it aside from digestion. They just plop it in basically untouched
They age in dog years, dying a few months after turning 9, and only reach adulthood at age 4. That's an absurd amount of time to spend as a child. The one you met is apparently 5 and considers himself a mature adult. The tantrums say otherwise. Yes, he also has arcane knowledge naturally. You are more surprised they live this long considering everything else about them
They have 4 genders and assigned you one, maybe randomly. Kind of rude, apparently very complex, but they have no idea how to explain it. You aren't asking
You are an Eridian and have just met a human. You must now convince your mate to let you keep them.
you don't even have a dog
Carl: *insists on going to protect Grace*
Grace: *insists he stays behind and takes a break 'cause hey he'll be fine, it's just one day*
Also Grace: *gets shot*

and out of the darkness - you you you you you
[Description: a looping bouncy animation of grace and Rocky from project hail mary. Grace throws himself onto rocky for a hug, smiling and nuzzling his face to the top of Rocky's xenonite covered carapace. Rocky brings a claw up to ruffle Grace's hair and grace throws himself even more on top of rocky, rocky wrapping his arms around grace. End description.]
PLZ I love protective!rocky so much omg
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
[part 1] [part 2]
rocky learns about the Denmark incident :]
Headcanon: Eridians don’t court/date. They see someone they like and gift them a nice rock. If the recipient accepts then they’re married, if not then the gifter moves on with a broken heart.
This happens with Rocky and Grace.
Rocky, upon arriving at Erid and after setting up the bio-dome, gifts Grace with a nice ass rock. Grace accepts because ‘cool space rock’ and Rocky’s been too nervous and excited to marry Grace that he forgot to tell the human about Erid customs.
If the Eridian brain shuts down completely completely during sleep, Eridians probably don't dream, right? Their brains aren't even active enough to do that, right? Once they're out, they're out. They're not getting up until their bodies are done resting and rehabilitating themselves.
So the concept of a human falling asleep and vividly hallucinating for hours every day is probably absolutely mind-boggling to Rocky.
Like what do you mean, humans experience fake memories while sleep, question?
And to go even further...
Trauma-related nightmares.
How would Rocky, who does not and cannot dream, comprehend why his best friend wakes up in a panic more and more often as their mission goes on, hyperventilating and shaking all over because poor Grace (who is NOT AN ASTRONAUT) cannot have made it out of all that without a giant helping of emotional scars to go along with the physical?
How would Rocky wrap his mind around how human brains have a way of twisting memories and experiences into something more painful than the event itself, while we are most vulnerable? Even though they hurt us emotionally. Even though there's sometimes not even danger for that defense mechanism to defend us from.
How would he come to understand we're not safe from our fears even when we sleep, and that's why Grace wakes up with such a pained, tear-stained face and then refuses to go back to sleep no matter how much Rocky pesters him about it? Even though humans get grumpy, angry, and stupid when they don't sleep? Even though Rocky observes and protects him?
Ryland Grace who is terrified of death and dying.
Ryland Grace who is a teacher in an American school.
Ryland Grace who has sat through countless hours of active shooter training.
Ryland Grace who has stood in his classroom and tried to figure out the best plan to keep everyone safe in that room with oh so many windows.
Ryland Grace who has awoken from nightmares alone, imagining he heard the sound of gunshots in the corridors.
Ryland Grace who has spent hours on the floor during drills reassuring his kids and desperate for someone to reassure him.
Ryland Grace who has walked into work every single day knowing this might be the day he has to stand between his kids and a gunman.
Ryland Grace who was <brave> before the world even knew of the Petrova line.
Feeling emotional about the concept of Rocky being able to hear Grace’s heartbeat. Like what do you mean he was alone for 46 years and he had no choice but to sleep without anyone watching, terrified cause he’s never had to do that before in his life, but then he befriends this alien and he’s weird and soft and his internal organs make noise and maybe that’s annoying at first but it becomes something soothing, a steady presence, always there. It speeds up when he gets nervous or excited and steadies out, calm and predictable, when he sleeps - and it’s always the first thing Rocky hears when he wakes up.
And what do you mean that the first time Rocky fell asleep after they parted ways to save their respective planets, he had to wake up to silence instead of Grace’s heartbeat.
I see your “Rocky swears like a sailor but only in pitches humans can’t hear/refuses to teach Grace what those words mean” and raise you “Rocky swears like a sailor and now has to explain to Grace that ‘bad bad bad’ isn’t actually a sequence you play on your Eridian speech piano in polite company.”
Grace is both horrified and amused to realise that a more accurate translation for what Rocky’s been saying is “shit shit shit”.
Hi guys! I thought I should just share my whole mini little library of Project Hail Mary-related things so they're all in one place:
It includes:
A digital copy of the movie (with subtitles in 30+ languages via download)
My transcript of the movie (more on that here)
Audio recordings of the movie
A PDF of the book
An EPUB of the book (for e-readers)
The full audiobook
A copy of Andy Weir's doc on Eridians
A copy of Andy Weir's spreadsheet on Astrophage physics (among many other things!)
A draft of the screenplay for the film from 2022
An audio recording of the director's commentary
My transcript of the director's commentary
There is also a UHD copy (that's too big to fit in the drive) here!:
Securely store, share, and access your important files and photos. Anytime, anywhere.
Please note that because of the way that google drive works, some of the subtitles only work if you download the file yourself.
The audiobook, audio recordings, and commentary all have their properties programmed so they (should) work just like songs with a track number, album cover, artist, and so on if you download them.
There are two audios of the movie, one is the entire film untouched and one is that same audio cut up and broken down into separate scenes for convenience.
Additionally, there are two versions of the movie transcript, one with time stamps that match the audio recording and one without. The time stamps (+ their titles from the audio) are outlined in that version, so if you double-click on that tab or click "show outline," they'll all show up and you can pick a specific scene.
Similiarly, there are two different versions of the director's commentary transcript. The first is made to listen along to the commentary, while the second is more intended to be read on its own. The first is a direct transcription of everything that's said (an attempt, at least), while the second is slightly cleaned up for easier reading, meaning things like jumbled sentences and stuttering were removed or reorganised, but nothing has been actually paraphrased. Both are broken down into different scenes based on how their conversation goes, and the listening version includes timestamps.
The first few seconds of the commentary are missing unfortunately as my US friend who was kind enough to record it for me had some technical difficulties at the start, but the she paraphrased the part that was missed. The commentary starts at that first red shot of Ryland Grace's face in the coma suit 32 seconds into the digital copy.
There's also a google doc with some instructions to follow if any of the files aren't working, which usually happens when too many people try to access or download something at the same time.
As always, if anything's not working right or you notice any mistakes in anything, please let me know and I'll fix it as soon as I can!
