I don’t like the original post that addressed this but felt the need to say something about it so hope nobody minds that I took this image-
But WHAT IS WITH THIS??? Not only is taking someone’s art and “fixing” it without permission not what you should do (instead you should simply let them know what they are doing, if they don’t care then they’re a lost cause anyway), but what this person did was WORSE than the usual “fixing”.
I mean, first thing I notice is Milk, at this point I don’t consider it editing I consider it vandalism, labelling Milk as evil and covering up his crosses like what?? Not only is there no reason to do that, but it’s not even the artist’s fault that’s part of his design!! They darkened the skin of Yam, as one would expect, but they also softened his expression?? Again, that’s PART OF THE CHARACTER and NOT THE ARTIST’S FAULT. And this took a while to notice, but they replaced the artist’s name in the signature with “dumb*ss” which is just the cherry on top of this vandalism. Don’t do this stuff!!!
I’m not saying the artist wasn’t whitewashing or anything, but this is not the way to handle it!!! Reacting to seeing a dark skinned character drawn with lighter skin like THIS is very counterproductive, like, the only people who could POSSIBLY find this okay already don’t whitewash. The people who are at risk of whitewashing because they are young artists could be taught how to not mess up if you be nice about it, but doing this?? Highly counterproductive! Forcing something onto someone while being rude to them causes them to want to do the opposite out of spite, and also puts the good thing in a bad light. DONT DO THIS STUFF!!!
While I’m at it I might add that the whole “angry black character with nice white character” thing was probably an honest mistake with no harmful intent. Like, Yam is based off the Korean tradition of roasting yams. When cookies are cooked longer, they get darker. His whole thing is being burnt, so he’d be dark. Making a dark cookie black coded makes sense. They wanted a cookie to contrast him, so they made Milk, something that can’t be burnt (I know it can but typically it isn’t). So Milk is light. I understand the concern but I think it’s wrong to accuse Devsisters of being racist just because of that. Especially since they try so hard to provide lots of representation! Everyone makes mistakes, even multiple mistakes, but as long as they’re honestly trying can you really call them terrible people? I mean, the cookie god of all that’s good is black, clearly they don’t just view black people as angry or whatever.
