Not to be super pretentious or anything, but Check Please! almost feels like it has an impressionistic approach to storytelling. The pace of the story is incredibly quick and there are a lot of events that are elided or only hinted at. There just isn’t enough time for anyone but Bitty and Jack to get what we’d consider a “character arc”.

And yet… I don’t feel cheated or unsatisfied. I love all of the characters with my whole heart. All those places that lack detail feel more like an invitation to participate than a glaring omission. It’s really interesting.

Could that possibly be because it’s made clear that it is Bitty and Jack’s story? And thus when Ngozi makes supporting characters, she also makes clear that they are supporting characters in this story, thus keeping the focus.

However, far from being just background cutouts, she gives them each enough life that they are able to stand out, and as noted, invite participation. Hell, there’s a guy whose only purpose in the story is to get hit with fries while wearing a 😑 expression, and the fandom collectively gave him a moniker.

How Ngozi created such an expansive sandbox truly is magical.
