He laid down and gently pulled her with him. He fit his body against hers and snuggled close. “I missed this,” he said, looking at her. “D…did you?”
This was the most comfortable that she had been in the past five years and Keller fought back an onslaught of tears as she pressed herself closer to his chest, seeking more and more comfort. "Of course I did." She squeezed her eyes shut. "Did you-- did you really try to move on?"

"Yes," he said. "I’ll take it." He kissed her cheek, his forehead going to hers. His skin tingled where his touched hers.
Keller sighed. "I should-- we shouldn't stay in here all night," she murmured against his skin. "But-- what if I stayed until dawn and then went to training? I don't want to leave you."Â

He buried his hand in her hair. “I’m trying….” He closed his eyes. “So, what can you tell me?” he whispered. “Five years….five….” He sighed and hugged her more firmly.
"Five years," Keller repeated and she pressed another kiss to his jaw. "I can just tell you that I am in love with you. Just as much as I did before I left. I can also tell you that when this is over, I'll never leave you again. Is that good enough?" Â

His hand trembled and he slowly pulled it away. He knew that it was reckless and borderline idiotic but he opened his arms and wrapped them around her, holding her. It was like putting a puzzle piece together or fit putting that finally brick into a wall. He hugged her close, tears streaming down his face.Â
The brunette almost shattered into pieces when he pulled her into his arms and she wrapped her arms around him as well, pressing her face into his chest. "I'm--" Keller stopped. "I can't apologize anymore. But I love you. And I missed you. I just--" Keller pressed a kiss to his jaw. "Please don't cry."

He looked at her. “You’re so beautiful,” he whispered. More tears glistened in his eyes. “So beautiful….” His heart ached, conflicted and confused. It had been through so much. His hand slowly reached up and he touched her cheek. The skin was warm beneath his touch and he could feel the softness that he’d memorized so long ago. She hadn’t changed in that aspect.Â
"Please don't tell me that," she said, crying. He had told her that the very day that she had been pulled away from him. And it just... hurt. It hurt in the worst way imaginable and the best way possible. She leaned into the touch of his hand, pressing her cheek further into it and just-- she just wanted to find a way to stay like this with him forever. She never, ever wanted to do anything that required leaving him. "I'm so, so sorry."

"Five years…." he said, quietly. "Five years I thought-" He sighed and sat on the bed, burying his face in his hands. This was almost all too much to bare. "I morned you, Katherine. I morned you and….and I tried to get over you…."
And I tried to get over you. Slashing her own throat would be less painful than hearing all of this. Keller moved gingerly until she was sitting next to him, careful not to touch him at all. "I'm sorry," she said again. "I'm so very, very sorry."

He stayed quiet for awhile, mulling it over and considering what she said. What did she mean the trust about their society? What did it all mean? What was she doing? He finally broke the silence with an audible inhale then said. “Fine. I trust you. I…I’ve always trusted you.” He ran his hands through his hair. “B…but those things you said to me out there earlier. That fucking hurt. It wasn’t necessary. You could have blended in with them. You fucking hurt me, do you understand that?”
"I didn't-- It was never--" Keller stopped, shutting her eyes and leaning heavily against the door. "It was never my intention to hurt you. I just... I wanted to talk to you. I missed you so, so very much." She looked stricken and small leaning against the door and she still hadn't unwrapped her arms from around herself. "I'm sorry. Really, I am."

He looked down at the promise ring then glanced down at his own. He inhaled sharply. “There was a time when….when you,” his voice hitched and he took a moment to collect himself. “There was a time when you trusted me with everything. T-trusted me with your life. S..something’s happening…you’re pretending to be an initiate? Please, Katherine….please. Where have you been? W-where did you go? W..why did you leave me?”
Keller sighed, wrapping her arms tightly around herself. "I can't tell you everything. If I'm found out, the less knowledge you have, the safer you'll be. I shouldn't even be in here talking to you." She took a step forward. "I didn't want to leave you. But where I went-- it's not pretty. But I learned the truth about our society. Maybe one day soon, you will too. I just have to do this right. Please... trust me."

Leo frowned. “I want answers!” he said, firmly. Tears continued to stream down his face and he lifted a shaking hand, pointing a finger at her. “Y-you…..you l…let me believe y-you were dead!”
Keller inhaled a sharp breath and exhaled more tears. "I can't-- I couldn't-- things would have changed. I couldn't tell you anything. I still can't tell you anything. Leo,please, you have to believe me," Her fingers found the promise ring on the chain that she still wore and she pulled it out so that it gleamed in the light. "I can't-- I can't tell you anything aside from the fact that I love you."

"N-no," he whimpered. "No. No, don’t…don’t do this to me…" He moved her off of him and backed away. "D-don’t. W…why? How? I-….I don’t u-understand…." Tears were falling down his face and he felt like he was being repeatedly kicked in the stomach.
She flinched like a wounded animal when he moved her off of him. That was-- that wasn't what she had been expecting but it was surely what she deserved. She took a few steps back towards the door, unsure if she should comfort him or just leave. "Leo," she said again, softer this time. "Please." She didn't know what she was asking for. She didn't know if he did either. Keller just knew that she needed something.

Leo looked up when he came in and he sucked in a breath, holding it. “Wh-…what-….” There were too many questions banging around in his head that it was hard to capture and verbalize just one. He shook his head at her and bit his tongue hard, willing himself not to cry.
"Do you not want me to be here?" Keller's own voice sounded tearful to her and she realized that was because she was crying. She was actively crying as she took a few uncertain steps towards him. It was almost hard to see around the tears but she found herself wrapping her arms around his middle and pressing her face into his chest. "Hi," she said again. And she couldn't deny that she felt like she was at home.

"I can’t do this right now," he said, quietly, cutting up his food, but not eating it. He was holding himself together with tiny stitches and if she pulled that loose he was going to lose it and he couldn’t afford to do that right now.
She stared at him for a moment, feeling the time tick by like one would note the passage of time like sand through an hourglass. But then she stood, fingers clenching tightly around her tray and nodding. "Okay," she said in reply and she was just itching to touch him but she did not. Instead, she went to sit with her other initiates.
Later that very night, she found herself outside of the first room that they had stayed in. The room that they had had their first kiss in. She didn't bother knocking as she slid in quietly, shutting it behind her. "Leo," she said to his silhouette. "Hello."

Leo didn’t answer her. He needed answers and he knew he had to sneak her out late at night in order to get them. However, he was petrified about what he might find once he started digging for them. He didn’t know who this was. She wore his soulmate’s face, but didn’t seem to have her heart. An image of Keller in his arms, laughing, face bright and happy flashed in his head and it felt like someone had plunged a knife into his heart. He led them into the cafeteria and let them go on their own, not saying a word. He sat down at a table in the corner.
Every single time he looked at her, he looked wrecked. Completely and utterly wrecked. And Keller's heart twinged in response each and every time. The female almost wanted to cry when he didn't answer her back, her desperation turning into a realization. She had missed him so much, it had been like a piece of her heart had been stolen from her. Actually, it felt like most of her heart had been stolen away from her. She placed very few items on her plate before finding a seat next to him at their remote little table. Let the other initiates think that she was buttering him up. "Don't be angry," she muttered slowly, eyes on her plate.

He looked up when she scurried back to him, dressing in the clothes she wore when he’d met her and fallen for her…and lost her. “Your hair grew out,” he muttered so no one could hear. That was all he could say, he was too nervous someone would overhear. “My old room. Midnight,” he added then coughed over it as more initiates joined them. “Hurry up!” he shouted to the rest of them.
Your hair grew out. Keller went to touch the long strands absent-mindedly, twirling one around her finger. Of course he would have noticed. Keller knew everything about him. She had kissed every single part of his face and she had touched him too. She knew him. She knew him better than she knew herself. She nodded quickly to show that she had heard him before reaching out her hand to take his on auto-pilot. But quickly, she jerked it back as if she were on fire. That wasn't-- she shouldn't be so quick to touch him. She shoved her hands into her pockets before turning to idly chatter with the other initiates until they were all in one line. "This batch is slow," she observed quietly to Leo as they started walking away, desperately wanting to hear his voice.

He thought that his heart had already broken when he had lost her five years ago, but he felt it shattering again at her taunting words. Who was this girl? This was not the girl he’d fallen for. For years he dreamt about her coming back to life, and this was the opposite of what he’d imagine it to be like. A lump formed in his throat and he refused to look at her. “The scrawniness of this group is making me sick. I have a lot of work to do.” He’d told so many lies in his life that he was quick with them.Â
"A lot of them are malnourished," Keller replied absent-mindedly. And it was, perhaps, one of the most honest things that she had said to him since she had arrived in Dauntless. "But they look like they'll have potential." A wave of nostalgia hit her as she passed the places where she had fallen in love with him even more every single day. There were tons of them. "Under your care, I know we'll succeed," Another genuine thing as they finally arrived at the place where the initiates would be staying. Keller hurried away from him once more, quickly changing into a black tank top and a pair of pants, thankful for the ease of movement that she had forgotten that she could have. She was the first initiate back to him-- with her hair tied in a neat ponytail that exposed the lettering on the back of her neck. The tattoo was one of the few things she hadn't gotten removed. "-- So I heard about the cake?"

Leo felt like he was going to break. “Now, actually. I’ll show you where your rooms are, then you will change and we will make our way to the dining hall. Follow me.” He led them down the halls, stuffing his hands in his pockets to hide their shaking.
He was paler than she had ever seen him before and her heart ached. She felt so bad for doing this to him. This wasn't-- she had wanted him to be glad. But he clearly wasn't. Maybe she should just 'drop out' and let someone else do this fucking job. But now that she was near him, she didn't ever want to leave again. She gravitated towards him. She was the first initiate to follow after him and she smiled cheerfully, trying to hide the cracks forming on the surface of her heart. "Are you alright, sir?" she asked. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

He bit his tongue until he tasted blood and arched an eyebrow. “You will learn not to speak out of turn. Everyone is to wait until I grant you permission to speak before doing so, understood? As for your question, I came in second, so no I did not exceed my own expectations, but seeing as I had a stab wound in the final task before going under for my simulation I’d say I was forced to overcome an extra obstacle. Though I was not first, I have learned a lot and I am not ashamed of my spot. Any other questions?” he asked in a challenging voice, looking over the group again.
She didn't bow her head or back down but she did incline her head a fraction, letting him know that she had heard him. I have learned a lot and I am not ashamed of my spot. Keller felt a beam of pride hit her like a punch in the face. It was clear to her now that Leo had come so far. She felt... terrible. Why was she was here? This was a terrible idea? She cast her gaze around to her fellow divergents-- the ones that she was in charge of. They had to rely on her and so she wouldn't let them down. The brunette glanced down with an expression of distaste on her face. If only they had let her choose another faction this time around. Abnegation would have been too familiar though. She didn't bother raising her hand this time and instead plucked at the orange fabric that she was clad in. "When do we get to change out of our old clothes? I've always favored Dauntless black."
