Hermes ( Mercury ) wields Caduceus, a golden staff with two snakes wrapped around it. Traditionally, it is associated with a number of things including the planet Mercury, trades, commerce, negotiation, the duty of heralds and other messengers. 

Hermes is a Deity traversing across two realms, and a snake is an ancient symbol indicating the crossing of worlds, thus, every area in which reciprocal exchange of gifts, services, and communicative acts is done, is his sphere of influence.

Hermes:

Sunlight streams through the airplane’s window and catches the little plastic cup of wine. Outside, the clouds are lambswool soft, yet seem sturdy enough to run across. I press the penny into my palm until it leaves a perfect, circular mark. It’s overwhelmingly humbling and tears sting my eyes. 

My clown winks and the girl blushes. She approaches shyly and asks to take a picture. I press my red, rubber nose to hers and she giggles, then hugs me tightly. We spin together int the middle of the crowd and for a second, time is frozen at this stepping stone between being a child and an adult: a reminder to be joyful.

I had my first shot in the dark in college. Red eye, black eye, blue eye. Even now it smells familiar yet elusive. Like gasoline, maybe, or late nights poured into a cup. Like reaching under the bed to retrieve a dropped pen or nearly-forgotten lingerie. Like its own kind of desperate magic–the need to live forever, to never falter, to keep going and going and going. A pink bunny in sunglasses peering up at you from the paper cup.

Lost. I’m lost. I take my own hand, pull myself to my feet. Love the lost one, the criminal, the end, the beginning. Watch the headlights of passing cars from the side of the road. Kiss the night air and feel the way it carries you.

A pair of shoes for every day, for every mood. My feet are my truest vehicle. Find the heels you can run in, climb in, dance in.

A Prayer in Dedication to Hermes

Hear me, O’ Quick Hermes of the Winged Sandals, Heart-Delighting Messenger, Many-Turning god of Travel, of Crossroads, Clever god of Luck and Fortune, I praise and admire you.     In each coin I pick up off the street, I find you. With every risky roll of the dice, I seek you. Down winding paths, I hope to follow you.       In twinkling eyes full of mischief, sneaky smiles and knowing gazes, in fast speech and thrilling impulses, I see you.       If life is a journey, then you are my Guide. Great Shepherd of Souls, please direct me. No matter where in this world I pass, whichever path my feet may follow, I trust in your guidance completely.

Walking the Path of Hermes

Roll with the punches.

Help those in need.

Travel fearlessly, but not foolishly. 

Become intimately familiar with that Hunger for movement. For change. To explore. To see.

Hermes has his palm placed on every word you speak, everything you say that can be understood. In this sense, it’s very easy to call him close. Don’t underestimate that. 

There’s never a good reason to not do the right thing. 

Subtlety isn’t helpful if you’re not being heard or understood.

It’s impossible to hold onto everything you value forever. 

The world isn’t going to pause and wait for you to recover from that loss, either. 

Real self care involves a lot of hard work. 

There’s always something amazing to be discovered in any moment.

Guide me, aid me with your wit and compassion to be closer to you and get to know you as I learn more about you. Hear me, help me to be a better follower and honor you the way you wish.

As surely as night eternally follows day I want our relationship to remain, only changed for the better. I will love you as you love me, and maybe even more in the future.
