blind willie johnson - dark was the night, cold was the ground

it is believed that at the age of seven, willie johnson witnessed his father beating his stepmother for going out with another man. the stepmother threw lye in young willie's face, blinding him.

johnson spent his life playing guitar, singing, and preaching but remained poor throughout his entire life. later in life, a fire destroyed his house, and unable to afford to rebuild it, he lived in the burned ruins. not long thereafter, he caught malarial fever and died.

this song was included among other recordings on the space vessel voyager, the first earth vessel to travel outside the solar system, in case intelligent extraterrestrial beings should discover the vessel.

to quote mr. josh lyman, "he died penniless...after sleeping bundled in wet newspapers in the ruins of his house that burned down. but his music just left the solar system."

Oun Sambath and his pet python.

A few months after Oun Sambath was born, his family found a baby python under his mattress. They carefully took it outside, but during the night it returned to be with the baby boy. The boy’s father prayed, and decided that the snake belonged to the boy and would bring them happiness. The boy and the snake have been together ever since. They have played together, have slept together, and even have talked together. “What do you say to the snake?” People have asked the boy. “That is a secret,” the boy has replied.
