Critical Evaluation
On the Proposal I outlined the following outcomes for my work:
1 A 3D Textured Model
2 Concept Art
3 sketches and traditional concept art
After completing my project, I feel like I have completed what I have set out to do in the beginning, which was solve the problem of unoriginal and dull weapons. I have created an original and interesting model that would go into an RPG world and more importantly my game environment. I asked my friends about my problem at the end and asked them if I have solved it, and they seemed to agree with me that I have solved it.
I achieved these outcomes that I set for myself as I have created a well done textured model, some concept art and sketches. I have also done them in a good quality too. I achieved all of these by using 3DS MAX, Photoshop and drawing on paper.
My work is suitable for my audience because it is a PEGI 16 so it shouldn’t have anything too violent or sexual in there. My work that I produced has definitely reached this criteria as the only other thing that I have in there is some environment in my concept art.
The only way that I can think of to develop my work even further is to do more detailed concept arts and sketches, and then to do a better texture for my 3D model. This wouldn’t make much difference to the quality of the work but it would help it a little.
In my opinion, I think my model was very successful. I first started out with the intentions of doing a few models, texture all of them, and do some concept art. But that plan changed as some of my peers talked to me about time and how they didn’t think I had enough of it to fully complete all of the work. Therefore, I changed this to only one developed and detailed model.
I think this was a very good idea as I could focus on one particular thing and make the quality a lot better than I would if I did three models. This worked very well for me, as I wanted to create an original and interesting weapon, so it helped me focus on one thing.
I think my overall research and ideas part was successful because I made lots of progress in getting ideas from my research because I did more than enough to spark ideas for original weapons. I had a lot of ideas from this from different types of weapons. I had a little trouble on deciding what to do for a final weapon. This was a difficult choice as I wanted to make so many ideas and develop on them, but I had to follow my original idea of just doing one weapon. I showed my development during my sketches; I went from doing a mix of weapons to one particular weapon that I came up with that I developed.
During production and Pre production, I used 3DS MAX and Photoshop to digitally create my models. During the actual modelling process, I came across a few problems here and there but nothing major. I think it went quite well apart from the texturing. I’ve always had a problem with texturing because it’s one of the difficult parts of a model. I struggled mainly with the flattening of the texture mostly. But, in the end after some struggles and annoying problems I made my unwrap. To make the model I used a lot of different tools that were in 3DS MAX. For example, I used welding to join pieces together. I also used chamfer to make edges smoother and make objects look better. In addition I used planes to trace my sketch that I made. This allowed me to make an accurate version of the idea that I envisioned.
This leads me on to my work in Photoshop. I think this went really well as well. In Photoshop I created my concept art of my model. This went well in my opinion because I created it successfully and it is at a good quality. However, I did have a problem with my drawing styles on Photoshop, as I had to use a mouse instead of a graphics tablet. The texturing for my model went very well apart from at the end when it was pointed out to me that the texture was not that great on the handle compared to the blade. I felt the same way after having a second look at it. So I made some major changes to the texture by making the darker bits a lot darker.
During the final part of the project when I was doing my renders, I used 3DS MAX to render my model. I tried to make the renders look realistic and professional. I think I succeeded at this. However, there were some parts of the render that I felt like changing like making some metal parts shinier, but I didn’t do this as I was still very happy with the result.
I think that I have developed all of my current skills. I have also picked up a skill whilst doing my FMP project. The main one that I have developed is my drawing skill and my digital art skill. The new skill is independent working. I have been able to work confidently by my self with not as much guidance as before. All of these are important for a future carrier because I want to go into either concept art or into animation and for both of these you need those two skills.
