nye’s new cage came in :)
i put it together for the most part and it’s now drying from sealing it. i’m still waiting for the glass to come in, but that’s not a big deal since the caulk needs 2-7 days to dry (it’s not supposed to be that humid over the next couple of days, so fingers crossed for two days)
is2g nye just sneezed? i’ve had him out for about an hour and i’m p sure he was asleep in my hand when suddenly his whole body contracted, he opened his mouth slightly, and let out a slight hissing noise (it all happened at once, not sequentially). i immediately listened to his breathing afterwards and couldn’t hear anything. i also waited five minutes and listened again and heard nothing, so i feel like it’s not a RI. do snakes ever sneeze when it’s not related to illness? while his enclosure has the correct humidity, my room is probably dry due to the heater being on. could that be affecting him since he’s been out for a bit?
I could be wrong as I’ve never seen it before, but he could be regurgitating. @wheremyscalesslither am I just talking out of my butt here?
it’s been seven days since he last ate, so i feel like that’s not it (he also just urated and defecated today, so i don’t think he’s blocked up or anything)? i kept him out another 20ish minutes after the event and he acted completely normal [while i was holding him, he was relatively still (which is normal for him); then i set him on my bed and he did his normal adventuring..he’s a surprisingly active bp when left to his own devices (outside of his enclosure…while in his space he’s the normal bp loaf) and always has been]. i should probably note that when it happened, his mouth didn’t open completely- maybe only a centimeter or two.
he has regurged once before, but it was when i upped his meal size and was feeding him once a week. my thoughts were he might not have had enough time to completely digest the previous week’s (which was the first meal that had been larger than previously)/his stomach wasn’t ready to stretch that far. i’ve switched him to eating every ten days and he hasn’t had any problems since.
i really appreciate your advice, though! i’m going to closely monitor him over the next couple of days (i have a four day weekend, so i can keep a closer eye than usual) and if it happens again i’ll schedule a vet visit.
I apologize, I’ve never heard of such a behavior. All I’m certain of is it wasn’t a sneeze, as ball pythons don’t have diaphrams, so they don’t have the muscles present to sneeze or cough. I’d definitely do some research, though. I will too. If I find something I’ll let you know.
ahh you’re wonderful, thank you! just doing some quick searching around and someone mentioned if it’s near time to do a complete cage clean it could have an effect? i don’t see how since i spot clean and don’t see any signs of mold, but tomorrow is actually cage cleaning day for him (it’s been a month), so i wonder if maybe that’s it? he’s relatively new to aspen, so maybe that is also affecting him somehow?
i normally cycle him between substrates every cleaning as a bit of enrichment. he goes between aspen, paper towel, and carefresh. this next time i’m thinking of trying eco-earth since it’ll be easier to maintain his humidity (and once i no longer need to have my heater on i’m thinking of trying reptibark, but i know it’s supposed to be awful at holding in humidity so i don’t want to use it when my room is dry). should i maybe nix the aspen? he did fine with it last time.
the urate was also right next to the hide he was in, so i suppose exposure to ammonia is a possibility? but it couldn’t have been there for very long, as i checked his enclosure last night (though admittedly not this morning- shame on me).
another possibility is stuck shed around his nose. he shed poorly last time around (i was out of town and his humidity was around 50% when i got back, but he had a humid hide the entire time i was gone- so he had the option to be in a humid environment), so it’s possible something is stuck there. i didn’t see anything, but i’ll check him again tomorrow.
the last thing i can think of off the top of my head is that i cleaned my heater’s filter earlier this week, but as you said: bps don’t have a diaphragm to sneeze from something like upturned dust.
everything i can find online talks about repeated “sneezing” noises, and his was only once and hasn’t happened since, so i don’t know. can a snake “startle” itself awake? because i’m 90% sure he was sleeping right before it happened. i’ve never heard of a snake doing so before, though. i also might’ve accidentally touched his head or something, startling him awake- so it could’ve actually just been him huffing in annoyance (i had been messing with his head earlier to see if he had stuck shed on his head boobs, so he might’ve just been fed up with me)

thankfully there was no regurge (at least yet, but it's been over an hour since the event and seven days since he last ate)! i'm starting to think i might just still be in paranoid parent mode, as i had to take one of my rats to the vet yesterday and am still on hyper-alert from that.

little fabala put me through quite a scare today. thankfully the vet was able to squeeze us in and we got her some meds. hopefully she’ll feel better soon.
nye finally shed, and it looks like he did so completely.
but the shed is in pieces. i’ve only had one shed with him that wasn’t 100% perfect and now this happens? his humidity was bumped up to 70% and he has had a humid hide for like 2 weeks (to my knowledge he never used it), so i’m just baffled as to why it didn’t come off in one piece.
so djratking is probably just gonna become a picture diary of only my animals. i don’t like that my main doesn’t have animals on it anymore, so yeah. this blog is about to become only semi-active (really depends on how often i take pictures)
