After supporting Earl Sweatshirt, buzzing and happy, I suddenly realized that did not record the set. Still on the concert energy, I decided to hop on the decks and record this selection of tunes new and old. Selected to play "Before Earl", recorded "After Earl". :-)

The name "Before Earl also refers to this mix containing some throwback tunes, although I also thoroughly enjoyed researching Earl Sweatshirt similar artists and the tips I received from Damon Flores.

Recorded from home after DJing the opening for Earl Sweatshirt on this day at TivoliVredenburg (Utrecht, NL). Flow Reina joined me in Tivoli but is not on this mix.

[MPFREE] Two Syllables Volume Twenty Two - First Word Records

Already at volume Twenty Two! The Two Syllables collection is awesome and sadly I missed a few years but we can get back on track together with their latest installment. First Word Records label boss Gilla treats us with 11 slices of real music made by real artists. No need for AI there! Every tracks breathes the soul and sweat of the artists involved, even when they manage to sound effortless.

Birds & Breaks - Eclectic Electronic ⁨@birdcageradio⁩ 05-01-2026

The first set of 2026! Pushed myself and ventured into a beats & breaks set getting to play all the cool stuff that is less suited for background/cafe settings and connect back to the days of playing the club. Loved this set, and am again grateful to be part of the  @birdcageradio  community letting me share music with you all.

Today I purchased a slice of Hip Hop history. And the only real way you can appreciate this to the fullest? In it’s LP form. Not because the audio quality is better, or the bass is fuller. No. You need it on vinyl because of the awesome panoramic photograph of Ludlow Street by Jeremy Shatan printed on full 4-panel gatefold. 

Now don’t you think it’s not about the music though. Learn more in this little backstory repurposed by me from the wikipedia source:

 The Beastie Boys’ second album was considered a flop by its label Capitol Records, who eventually even stopped promoting it altogether. However this special collaboration between sampling geniuses & smart lyricists is nowadays regarded as a landmark album in hip hop.

Paul's Boutique was produced with the Dust Brothers, whose extensive, innovative use of sampling helped establish the practice of multi-layered sampling as an art in itself. In total, 105 songs were sampled on the album, including 24 individual samples on the last track alone. Contrary to popular belief, most of the sampling for Paul's Boutique was cleared, racking up a total cost of $1/4 million in rights and licensing. Most of the backing tracks were allegedly produced with the intention of being released as a Dust Brothers instrumental album, but the Beastie Boys convinced the duo to use the tracks as the basis of their follow up to Licensed to Ill.

The album received a gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America on September 22 of its release year. Paul's Boutique would go on to sell over 2 million copies by 1999, achieving double platinum status. The album was re-released in a 20th anniversary package remastered in 24-bit audio and featuring a commentary track on January 27, 2009 (the version I bought today).
