Internet providers are opening a new front in the net neutrality fight

The cable and wireless industries are asking federal judges to temporarily keep the FCC's rules from taking effect.

The fight over net neutrality is far from over, even after the FCC issued stricter rules for Internet providers. This is the latest news over the next battle. 

The new regulations “aim to keep Internet providers from blocking, slowing or prioritizing some Web traffic over others.” The Internet providers are arguing that the FCC’s net neutrality regulations are an illegal use of power by the federal government. This debate could end up destroying the rules and regulations and giving Internet providers more power to control the Web.

Once again, streaming services are becoming increasingly the norm. Now that CBS has its own membership based streaming package it is bridging out and making new partnerships such as Roku and now Chromecast. This is important because it shows that the ISPs which distribute the internet are continually growing in power and importance as it strips value from the previously dominant cable/television companies.

This is an interesting update in the world of social media. Reddit, a very popular forum based social media site is implementing a new harassment clause for Redditers. The clause is meant to limit trolling and harmful postings and will act as Reddit’s first big back-end related, on-site law. However, this type of back-end monitoring of the front-end of the site may not be a negative as it could foster deeper community connections; of corse, only time will tell.

National CineMedia Sees the Future of Advertising at the Movies

National CineMedia (NCM) had a message for brands and media agencies attending its upfront event at AMC's Lincoln Square Theater in New York today: TV is dead. Specifically, the audience for live television is dwindling while the film industry remains as healthy as ever—or almost as healthy.

As movies switched to digital formats in the past few years, the cinema had a lot of new possibilities arise. One such possibility which is only now being discussed is the usage of advertisements. As users online generally skip ads, and television viewership is dwindling, its a viable option for advertisers and it could very well become a reality thanks to the digital upgrade to cinema’s as advertisements can now easily be placed.

Data is king. And its interesting to see how a company is willing to sell that data when it no longer becomes relevant. This is a huge privacy concern as many people accept giving data to companies but rarely accept the selling of that data outside of its original creation. This reminds me of Alex Stalder’s piece when he explains how every tracked data point is an economic gain for backend company usage.

I work in search engine marketing so this is HUGE news for me. But it should also be huge news for almost every business owner in the world. What it translates to is that search engine providers are not greatly limiting the access to smaller websites which may not have the technological or economic standing to create mobile friendly pages. While most new pages will have this capability as it is becoming the standard, this will certainly exclude some smaller websites with too small of an economic income to revamp and recode.
