Body Positivity Vs. Body Complacency
If you spend any amount of time looking at health and fitness boards online, then I’m sure you’ve heard about the concept of body positivity. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, I’ll let Wikipedia sum it up for you:
“The Body Positive Movement is a feminist movement that encourages women and/or female-identifying people to adopt more forgiving and affirming attitudes towards their bodies, with the goal of improving overall health and well-being.“
Awesome concept right? You’ve only got one body, so you should learn to accept the things that you can’t change about it. Maybe you think your nose looks funny, or you’ve got a mole you don’t like, or you’re taller/shorter than you want to be. These are all things that you have no control over, and should learn to accept. However, when it comes to things that negatively affect your health and that you actually can change, some people like to “forget” about the second part of that last sentence. You know, the part where it says that your goal should be to improve your overall health. This is where body positivity turns into body complacency.
There are certain groups of people that would have you believe that in order to practice real body positivity, you need to accept everything about your body, even if that thing is killing you. Movements like Health At Every Size and other similar concepts preach, “Who cares if you’re clinically obese, your body is perfect the way it is!” But that’s just not true…
Obesity is dangerous, and people are out there telling impressionable young people that not only is it not dangerous, it’s preferable. On top of that, they’re also telling these people that it’s impossible to lose any weight, and if you try, your body will fight back and put on even more weight than before! What kind of person would purposefully deceive someone into thinking that being unhealthy is a better alternative to being healthy? And what kind of person would lie and tell someone that weight loss is impossible? We aren’t telling people who are dehydrated that they will never drink water again and that they should learn to accept that. This isn’t Greek mythology. They aren’t Tantalus. So why are we telling people that once they’re fat they’re doomed to be fat forever?
Losing weight is simple. Eat less, do more. Count your calories, stay hydrated, and exercise. If you’re overweight and have the motivation to take care of your body and to lose weight, I’d like to say that that’s the real way to be body positive.
