Instant Hot Water Dispenser OR Electric Kettle; Which Is Better?
At DNA Health we are all about healthy living and doing what is best for the environment. We have our own instant hot water dispenser in the form of the DNA Water Purifier. A countertop Water Purifier requiring no installation and featuring 4-stage Water Purification. Including Filtration via Reverse Osmosis, as well as 5 different temperature settings from ambient temperature up to 95°C, therefore producing instant hot water on demand.
But what does it mean to have instant hot water on demand? Itâs important to consider factors such as energy consumption, convenience, health, and cost when comparing the DNA Water Purifier to any standard kettle. Letâs explore the differences between the two so that you feel comfortable and confident in your decision.
Health Advantages of Instant Hot Water Dispensers
Instant hot water dispensers avoid the issue of repeatedly boiling water or storing hot water for extended periods, which can be beneficial for health. The DNA Water Purifier additionally purifies water through a robust 4-stage reverse osmosis filtration system. So you can enjoy pure hot water free from any harmful micro-particles and other contaminants.
Health Risks of Electric Kettles
The repeated boiling process of electric kettles may release substances harmful to health, such as nitrite. Although the amounts are typically low, long-term consumption could pose health risks. Additionally, prolonged contact between hot water and the metal interior of the kettle may lead to metal leaching into the water, potentially affecting water quality.
Energy Consumption of Instant Hot Water Dispensers
Instant hot water dispensers are designed to heat water on demand, only heating when hot water is needed, resulting in very low standby energy consumption. According to consumer reports, an instant hot water dispenser used several times over 24 hours consumes between 184 â 233 Wh, while standby energy usage is as low as 6.5 â 17.1 Wh. This makes instant hot water dispensers relatively more energy-efficient for long-term use.
Energy Consumption of Electric Kettles
Electric kettles, on the other hand, need to maintain the temperature of the water, especially if they are kept plugged in for long periods. Daily consumption can reach up to 2 kWh, which adds up to as much as 730 kWh annually, leading to higher long-term costs. Therefore, if energy savings are a priority, instant hot water dispensers are clearly a better choice.
Features of Instant Hot Water Dispensers
The DNA Water Purifier provides 5 different temperature settings from ambient temperature up to 95°C. Allowing you to quickly heat water without waiting. Whether making coffee, different teas, or preparing baby formula, an instant hot water dispenser is convenient for households that frequently need hot water and want to save time. The DNA Water Purifier is also completely portable, isnât plumbed in and comes with a TDS counter.
Features of Electric Kettles
In contrast, an electric kettle requires you to fill it with water and wait a few minutes for it to boil, generally taking 3 â 5 minutes to complete the heating process. This may be less convenient when hot water is needed immediately. However, electric kettles often have a larger capacity, making them suitable for families that need large amounts of hot water at once.
Cost of Instant Hot Water Dispensers
The initial purchase cost of an instant hot water dispenser is relatively high, typically exceeding HKD 1,000. However, they are versatile and durable, with lower long-term energy costs despite the higher upfront expense. The DNA Water Purifier also is completely portable, looks great on your counter, measures the TDS of water prior to as well as after purification and indicates when water filter cartridges need replacing. So you get more features for the price.
Cost of Electric Kettles
Electric kettles are more affordable, usually costing a few hundred Rands, but their long-term electricity costs may be higher. If you have a limited household budget and use it infrequently, an electric kettle might be a suitable choice.
Conclusion
When deciding between an instant hot water dispenser and an electric kettle, consider your householdâs specific needs. If your family frequently requires hot water, values health, and aims to save on electricity, then the DNA Water Purifier is the better option. It offers various temperatures, avoids the issue of reboiling water, and is more energy-efficient. However, if you have a limited budget and do not need hot water frequently, then the traditional electric kettle is for you. We hope you found this information helpful!
It's important to consider important factors when comparing an Instant Hot Water Dispenser and a standrard Electric Kettle.
We all share the same concern about the use of pesticides and the potential health risks they pose to us and our environment. Revisiting the damage done by the pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) on the eastern coast of South Africa, we see the initial effects, long-term effects, and the risk posed to us even today. Currently, people are using pesticides more than ever before, leading to higher levels of human consumption than ever seen. This high consumption of pesticides is very problematic because they can cause reproductive problems, neurological problems, cognitive problems, and developmental problems.
The type of pesticide determines its health effects. Organophosphates and carbamates, for example, affect the nervous system. Others irritate the skin or eyes. Some pesticides cause cancer, while others disrupt the hormone or endocrine system. The EPA assesses health risks by determining that pesticide residues on food pose âreasonable certainty of no harm.â
The Effects of DDT on South Africans 2000-2007
Countries that signed the 2001 Stockholm Convention banned chemicals such as DDT and lindane, initially including South Africa. However, South Africa reintroduced the chemical under the new name DDT IRS in 2000 to aid residents during a malaria epidemic associated with the emergence of a pyrethroid-resistant strain of Anopheles funestus. South Africa accumulated an estimated 386 tons of DDT, meaning it had to spray an average of 280,000 homes, directly affecting the lives of at least 1.125 million South Africans.
Pesticides, by their nature, potentially harm other organisms, including humans, so we need to use them safely and dispose of them properly. They rank among the leading causes of death by self-poisoning, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries. DDT and other chlorinated insecticides stimulate and depress the central nervous system. Single doses of 6 to 10 milligrams in humans cause neuro-developmental effects such as nausea, headaches, diarrhoea, irritation of the mucous membranes, tremors, convulsions, and nervous system abnormalities. DDT may also damage the liver and central nervous system, causing excitability and seizures in people.
The Lasting Effects of Pesticides
Older, cheaper (off-patent) pesticides like DDT and lindane can remain in soil and water for years. Even if an area used these pesticides years ago, traces of these chemicals might still be in your drinking water. Borehole water also carries pollutants, such as various pesticides and heavy metals, that get absorbed into the soil. Rain washes pesticides from crops into flowing water downstream, causing farms to unintentionally contaminate bodies of water. Drinking untreated water is hazardous, especially over the long run, as you unknowingly ingest these pesticides in your water for several years.
The Environmental Impact of Pesticides
Pesticide use contributes to environmental harm in surrounding areas as the seasons progress. Pesticides significantly harm wildlife across the planet, causing effects such as stunted growth, damaged reproduction, and behavioural changes in non-target animals. More than 800 species, both inland and aquatic, suffer detrimental effects, including reduced growth rates, reproductive success, and abilities to catch prey or attract mates. Therefore, the true extent of pesticide harm may be even greater than reported.
How do you protect yourself from Pesticides?
To minimize your exposure to pesticides in your food, shop organically and wash and peel your produce before ingesting it. Organic farmers do not use harmful pesticides on their produce. Animal products contain traces of pesticides due to the kinds of animal feed used. Avoid consuming animal fat because most pesticides are found in the fatty parts of animal products. Air fryers are the perfect solution because while cooking animal products the fats and oils from your food fall off the meat during the cooking process making it overall healthier for you. Minimising your consumption of fats and oils also in turn minimises your potential exposure to pesticides.
Use a water purifier with a reverse osmosis filtration system that includes an activated carbon filter. This filter effectively removes certain pesticides from water. The semi-permeable membrane removes some dissolved pesticides, such as endrin, while activated carbon filtration media absorb other pesticides and their volatile organic compounds. The DNA Water Purifier features a 4-stage reverse osmosis filtration system with a TDS indicator for source and purified water, and a robust four-in-one filter cartridge: a PP cotton filter cartridge, a pre-processing activated carbon filter cartridge, a DNA reverse osmosis filter cartridge, and a post-processing activated carbon filter cartridge. With the DNA Water Purifier and all of its features and functions, you can rest assured that you are protected from pesticides.

Reverse Osmosis Can Combat Limescale In Your Kitchen
The DNA Water Purifier uses 4-stage Water Purification including Filtration via Reverse Osmosis making it an ideal solution for potential limescale build-up in your appliances and the removal of heavy metals in your drinking water. The DNA Water Purifier can also range from ambient temperature up to 95°C, ultimately replacing your kettle. In this blog, we will go over the effects of limescale and how Reverse Osmosis Filtration can combat it.
What Is Limescale
Limescale, a hard, off-white deposit, begins to form, silently damaging your plumbing and appliances. This pesky substance is a byproduct of limescale formation, which occurs when water with high levels of calcium and magnesium flows through your pipes. These minerals precipitate out of the water, leaving behind a stubborn residue thatâs notoriously difficult to remove.
If you live in an area with hard water (high levels of grains per gallon), youâre likely no stranger to the telltale signs of limescale: streaked dishes, cloudy glassware, and soap scum buildup. Limescale acts as an insulator, forcing appliances with a heating element to work harder, over time, this can lead to increased energy consumption. The build-up of limescale can have costly consequences such as reducing the efficiency of your appliances, increasing your energy bills, clogging pipes and overall damaging your appliances over time.
What Is Reverse Osmosis Filtration?
Reverse osmosis is one of the most effective forms of water filtration because unlike chemical or carbon filtration systems, which use certain materials to attract or directly target the contaminants in the water, reverse osmosis works by pushing water through a microscopically small filter material. Instead of thermal energy, it uses high amounts of pressure to push the water through the filters.
This semi-permeable membrane has a pore size of around 0.0001 microns, effectively only allowing the small water molecules through and catching any larger molecules of contaminants, organic materials or even salt. Even dissolved substances are separated from the water and this is because the membrane essentially strips the water down to basic molecules as it passes through. Even residential-grade reverse osmosis filters can remove up to 99% of lead, asbestos and 82 other additional contaminants.
How Does Reverse Osmosis Filtration Combat Limescale?
Reverse osmosis filters, which use a semi-permeable membrane to remove impurities from water, are a more effective solution for reducing limescale buildup, as theyâre capable of removing the minerals responsible for scaling, such as calcium and magnesium. You can expect a significant reduction in limescale deposits, making it an attractive option for those struggling with hard water (high levels of grains per gallon).
Using the DNA Water Purifier you can expect a drastic change in your home once you start using purified water;
If you have a coffee machine that takes a tank of water you can now fill that tank with purified water which reduces limescale buildup within the pipes of your coffee machine.
Using purified water in your fish tanks is a bonus because your aquatic pets wonât be exposed to the added human contaminants or minerals.
Cooking with purified water also has a change in improved taste due to the absence of the added minerals.
Using purified water in your kettles will help your appliance last longer.
Peace of mind knowing exactly what is in your drinking water.
Additional Benefits of the DNA Water Purifier
With a modern design and a user-friendly function, the DNA Water Purifier will keep you and your family happy and healthy by giving you more than just pure water. The unit has a 4-in-1 Filter Cartridge for easy cartridge replacement and will last you 5000L. It has 5 Temperature Settings (Ambient, 40°C, 60°C, 80°C, 95°C) and has a child lock function to prevent any child from accidentally dispensing boiling water. For an added benefit you can read the visible TDS Indicator for Source and Purified Water to really get an idea of what is in your tap water.
Conclusion
The DNA Water Purifier is so much more than just a water purifier as it can replace your kettle, keep your pet fish healthy extend the longevity of your other appliances, and improve the flavour of your cooking and you simply have to plug it in at home, no installation required. Say goodbye to hard water and say hello to pure water. It is life in a glass.
Cold Press Juicing is a newer juicer type and itâs taking over juicers as we know it. Cold Press Juicing is the best way to juice going forward. At DNA Health we have a range of Cold Press Juicers and we have our DNA Cold Flow Juicer, it has everything youâd want in a juicer, hands-free, extra large hopper and easy to clean up. We will go over why you need a Cold Press Juicer today and start juicing!
What Is A Cold Press Juicer
These newer juicers extract juice by first crushing and then pressing fruit and vegetables for the highest juice yield. Because they donât produce as much heat, they keep more of the fresh ingredientsâ nutrients intact.
Slow juicers use an auger that crushes and squeezes fruits and vegetables to extract juice, while Cold Press Juicers use a hydraulic press to extract juice.
Cold Press Juicers, on the other hand, are considered to be more efficient and effective, as they press the juice out of the produce without crushing it.
This method produces a juice that is less exposed to heat and oxidation, which can result in a longer shelf life and more nutrients in the juice.
What Is A Manual Juicer
You need to manually crank manual juicers until they create juice. They are great for wheatgrass specifically but also work well for other types of produce. Keep in mind, the harder the produce, the more difficult it will be to juice. These juicers are perfect if you are off the grid, on a road trip, or travelling/camping. They allow you to easily juice a cup of juice with minimal effort and no need for electricity.
What Is A Centrifugal Juicer
Traditionally, this is the most common type of juicer. These typically utilize a fast-spinning metal blade that spins against a mesh filter, separating juice from flesh via centrifugal force. The juice and pulp are then separated into different containers. The problem with centrifugal juicers is that the fast-spinning metal blade generates heat, which destroys some of the enzymes in the fruits and vegetables youâre juicing.
Nutritional Value
Cold Press Juicers excel in producing juice high in nutrients and enzymes. The low speed minimizes heat generation and oxidation, ensuring that delicate nutrients, enzymes, and antioxidants remain intact. As a result, Cold Press Juicers produce a nutrient-dense juice that retains the natural flavours and colours of the produce.
Regular juicers, on the other hand, tend to generate more heat and friction during the juicing process. This can lead to the degradation of heat-sensitive nutrients, such as vitamin C and certain enzymes. Additionally, the high-speed spinning action can introduce more oxygen into the juice, accelerating the oxidation process and diminishing its nutritional value over time.
Quantity Of The Pulp
Cold Press juicers typically extract all the pulp when juicing a variety of fruits and vegetables whereas a centrifugal juicer wonât always leave your juice pulp-free and if youâre someone who tends to have a sensitive stomach then youâre better off with a Cold Press Juicer. If you are a seasonal baker then dry pulp is perfect to bake with!
Versatility
When it comes to versatility, Cold Press Juicers and regular juicers offer distinct advantages. Cold Press Juicers excel at extracting juice from various fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, and even wheatgrass. Their gentle pressing action accommodates a wide range of produce, allowing you to explore diverse juicing combinations and create nutrient-packed juices tailored to your specific dietary needs.
Regular juicers, while primarily designed for juicing fruits and vegetables, may struggle with certain types of produce, such as leafy greens and wheatgrass. Their high-speed spinning mechanism can damage delicate greens and result in a juice with a less desirable texture and flavour.
Noise Level
No one wants a loud juicing experience and a centrifugal juicer is way louder compared to the Cold Press Juicers. The only sound you hear from a Cold Press Juicer is the sound of your fruits and vegetables being squished by the auger, no motor sounds or blade sounds, just a calm and quiet juicing experience.
Cleanup and Maintenance
Cleanup and maintenance are essential considerations when looking for a juicer to buy. Cold Press Juicers generally require less cleanup and the DNA Cold Flow Juicer requires even less cleanup with the use of only 3 parts compared to other Cold Press Juicers. Centrifugal Juicers take more time to clean require a lot more maintenance due to all the moving parts and are generally more susceptible to frequent wear and tear.
Price Range
The price range of Cold Press juicers and regular juicers varies depending on the brand, features, and quality of the appliance. However, the investment in a slow juicer can be justified by its longevity, versatility, and the potential health benefits associated with consuming nutrient-rich juices. Regular juicers, while more affordable, may require more frequent replacement due to their higher wear and tear. Additionally, their limited versatility and potential nutritional drawbacks may make them a less attractive option for individuals seeking a long-term juicing solution.
Conclusion
In conclusion, cold press juicing stands out as an excellent choice for those who prioritize nutrient preservation, pulp-free juice, and a wide range of juicing options. While the decision between a slow juicer and a regular juicer ultimately depends on individual needs, preferences, and budget, the benefits of cold press juicing are clear. It offers superior nutritional value, versatility, and a quieter, more efficient juicing experience.
Embracing a cold press juicing routine can be a rewarding way to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet, helping you achieve a healthier lifestyle. Whether you opt for a slow juicer or a regular juicer, the key is to enjoy the process and the delicious, nutritious results. Cheers to your health!
Airfryers as a whole are getting increasingly common in the everyday household, but why? There is a lot to unpack when it comes to air fryers, why are they great, why are some more expensive than others, what you should watch out for when buying an air fryer and many more related questions. At DNA Health we have 3 completely different DNA Airfryers that serve different purposes that suit different consumers.
Why Are Airfryers So Popular?Â
There is a very scary time we are all familiar with and that was COVID Lockdown. Yes, this is one of the key areas where air fryers skyrocketed in popularity. Students suddenly needed to learn how to cook fast, no quick Starbucks, no university meals, and no more instant noodles (no one could live off that for too long). And an air fryer was the perfect solution because it took little to no skill or time to prepare delicious, and sometimes nutritious, meals in minutes.
Online school really encouraged busy parents to whip up quick and nutritious warm meals for their children during both their lunch breaks. A quick air-fried meal was the ideal solution. The same concept applies to the many workers that were now working from home. The convenience of receiving an instant prepared meal at work was suddenly not an option. Sure an air fryer canât magically prepare a full meal in an instant, but it was the next best thing other than taking the extra long cook time on the stove.
In other words, those who no longer could grab an instant meal now turned to air fryers for quick and easy meals to prepare during work or even school hours. And even after the Lockdown was lifted those who did end up with an air fryer loved them so much that they recommended them to all their friends and family members. Which gave rise to the âclearly you donât own an air fryerâ meme.

Are The DNA Airfryers Worth It?
Yes, it is worth owning an air fryer. It is a healthier alternative, especially for those with diabetes, high cholesterol, or heart conditions. An Airfryer is significantly healthier than using a normal oil fryer simply because a high intake of fats and oils is bad for you and can cause health issues. And an Airfryer will give you the same result as an oil fryer only containing less calories and reducing your oil intake. The reduced cooking time is also a bonus!
Choosing an air fryer means knowing which essential features to look for when buying one. From size to design, thereâs plenty to consider. The DNA Airfryer rage are high-performance Airfryers that make for speedier cooking and great results every time. With digital touch screens, smart technology, and with many presets and accessories to enjoy!
Visible Window
Having a visible window in your Air Fryer is a must for cooking the perfect meal. Looking in on whatâs cooking makes sure you donât interrupt the cooking process by opening the door. It also allows you to keep an eye on your food while watching it transform.
Size Matters
The bigger the better! We would always recommend purchasing a larger air fryer for the convenience of having more space to work with. With smaller air fryers you shouldnât overload it too much otherwise your food wonât cook properly, so why not just get the bigger air fryer and enjoy the extra space? We know you wonât regret it!
Programming
Presets, presets, presets, the best feature of newer air fryers is the advanced technology and programming that goes into them today. It is simply the best to place your food in an air fryer and select a preset rather than adjusting the time and temperature manually. Got pizza, then choose the pizza preset! Got pop-corn, then choose the pop-corn preset! And so on.
Spares
Imagine this, you just bought an air fryer in South Africa and after some time one of the accessories goes missing, how long do you think it will take you to receive a spare, a month, a week? At DNA Health it will only take days because we are a South African-based company and do our best to have stock on spares for the convenience of our customers.
Price vs Quality
Often the price point can be the most significant deciding factor when buying a kitchen appliance like an Air Fryer. Choosing a cheap option means you often sacrifice quality and convenient features. Lower-quality air fryers tend to leak chemicals into your food so itâs important that you take careful consideration into choosing an air fryer that is made with higher-quality materials so itâs safer and tends to last a lot longer.
Design
Air fryers come in many shapes and sizes, but the most common shape is a rounded design almost like an egg with a basket, at DNA Health all our air fryers from our range have a sharper and unique square design and are made with a metal exterior with a mixture of a matt design and a gloss or reflective design. Very modern! All our DNA Airfryers have a visible window so you keep an eye on your food without the need to open the air fryer and let all that hot air out.
Bottom Line
The DNA Airfryer range is praised for its versatility, range of sizes, ease of use and the utilisation of presets and accessories to cook any dish and replace other appliances. The DNA Smart Airfryer utilised the basket design, the DNA Airfryer Oven utilises an oven design with a 14.5l capacity and the DNA Dual Airfryer Oven has a much larger capacity of 36l and comes with more accessories to suit all your needs. Although the DNA Airfryer range is not the cheapest in the market it does make a difference with its versatility, size, ease of use, amount of presets, accessories, customer service and overall quality.

Detoxification also known as a full-body detox often implies following a diet or taking supplements to rid your body of toxins and weight loss. However, our bodies naturally go through regular detoxification but that is only if we make healthy choices and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Reduce Alcohol Consumption
Your liver is responsible for filtering waste and other toxins from your body. Your liver metabolizes more than 90% of the alcohol you consume which is why limiting or abstaining entirely from alcohol is one of the best ways to keep your bodyâs detoxification system running strong. Excessive alcohol consumption can result in fat buildup, inflammation, and scarring.
Good Rest Leads To Natural Detoxification
A good nightâs sleep (7-9 hours) maintains your bodyâs natural detoxification system. When youâre suffering from sleep deprivation, your body does not have time to detox naturally which can result in toxin buildup and affect your health. A prolonged poor sleep schedule has been linked to stress, anxiety, high blood pressure, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
Water Is The Best For Detoxing Your Body
The adequate daily water intake is 2.7 â 3.7 Liters this varies on your environment and activity level. Water is vital to any diet and has more health benefits than you think. Drinking water regulates your body temperature, lubricates joints, aids digestion and nutrient absorption, and detoxifies your body by removing waste products.
Your bodyâs cells must continuously repair themselves to function optimally and break down nutrients for your body to use as energy. The process of cellular replication and nutrient breakdown releases waste which water transports and excretes out of your body. So staying properly hydrated is important for detoxification.
Avoid Sugar and Processed Foods
There are many research studies that have linked the overconsumption of sugar and processed foods to health deterioration, chronic diseases, cancer and obesity. By consuming too much processed foods you are introducing more toxins into your body than your body can naturally break down. Thus putting strain on your organs that could potentially lead to more health consequences further down the line. Replacing junk food with healthier choices like fruits and vegetables is also a healthy way to reduce consumption.
Detoxing 101; Prioritise Antioxidant-Rich Foods
Your body naturally produces free radicals for nutrient breakdown and other cellular processes, however too much of this molecule can result in a risk to your health and eating foods rich in antioxidants can combat this. The quantity of free radicals is affected by excessive smoke inhalation, alcohol, low-nutrient diet, and exposure to pollutants. Too many free radicals in your body can contribute to dementia, heart disease, liver disease, asthma, and certain types of cancer.
Examples of antioxidants include vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Berries, fruits, nuts, cocoa, vegetables, spices, and beverages like coffee and green tea have some of the highest amounts of antioxidants. Juicing fresh juice at home allows for quick, high-nutrient-packed juice that can be rich in antioxidants depending on the recipes you use.
The Link Between Detoxing And Prebiotics
A good and healthy gut is important to the overall function of your body, if your gut canât break down and absorb nutrients it will affect your health as a whole. To keep your gut healthy you need to maintain your good bacteria balance by consuming prebiotics moderately. Antibiotic use, poor dental hygiene, and diet quality can all alter the bacterial balance in your gut which can cause your immune system to weaken and increase your risk of disease and inflammation. Eating foods rich in prebiotics can keep your immune and detoxification systems healthy. Good food sources of prebiotics include tomatoes, artichokes, bananas, asparagus, onions, garlic, and oats.
Exercise Promotes Natural Detoxification
If youâve heard it once, youâve heard it many times, regular exercise is very good for your health. You need approximately 2.5 â 5 hours of exercise a week to get all the benefits. Exercise minimises your risk of diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers. It keeps your body healthy and maintains your bodyâs natural detoxification system.
Extra Tips for Detoxing
Avoid chemical-heavy products such as switching to natural cleaning products and natural body care products. Your exposure to chemical-based products can also hinder your bodyâs natural detoxification system. You can also invest in a healthier lifestyle by changing the way you cook by using the DNA Airfryer Oven to reduce the amount of fat and oils in your food. Air fryers have additional benefits listed in this blog. You can start juicing regularly as fresh juice has more benefits than store-bought juice. Since water is very important in the detoxification process you can also invest in a water purifier for 100% pure and safe water.

Nearly Half of South Africaâs Drinking Water is Unsafe
The Facts:
The Blue and No Drop Water Report, released on December 5, 2023, highlights serious concerns about the safety of South Africaâs drinking water, with nearly half deemed unsafe. Since 2014, municipal water systems have declined in effectiveness. The report assessed 958 water supply systems across 144 authorities, finding 29% in critical condition. Contributing factors include poor management, outdated infrastructure, rapid housing growth, and inadequate water management. Despite the overall decline, major metropolitan areas still perform well in key areas. However, poor water quality poses risks to health and the economy.
Testing:
The 2023 Blue Drop Watch Report has revealed that there has been a deterioration in drinking water quality since the last Blue Drop report was done. News24 and Netwerk24 have been independently testing water samples from major South African cities to verify drinking water quality. Funded by Truth First and supported by a network of laboratories, they tested weekly samples from city taps for key biological and chemical indicators. Their findings have been reassuring for city residents, showing safe and often high-quality drinking water, in contrast to the national situation. The interim Blue Drop Watch Report for 2023 revealed that 71% of the 151 water systems tested were not chemically compliant, and 51% had poor microbiological results. Some water was dangerously contaminated, linked to a recent cholera outbreak.
Summary of Findings:
The results of the independant testing revealed surpising results in afluent cities, however Cape Town revealed to have turbidity issues. Although these resutls are close to standard it must be mentioned that the further out from the cities you are the lower quality of water youâll recieve. And it will only continue to deteriorate due to the state of infastracture.
No Risk of Cholera or Harmful Bacteria:Â Over a month of testing, we found coliform bacteria in only one Cape Town sample, at safe levels. No E. coli was detected, indicating no faecal contamination in the tested water systems.
Safe Drinking Water:Â In affluent suburbs of six cities, thereâs no worry about diseases from tap water.
Chemical Safety:Â Water from all city taps met standards for chlorine, dissolved salts, and pH levels.
Turbidity Issues:Â Johannesburg and Durban passed all turbidity tests, while Cape Town and Bloemfontein had significant issues. Turbidity, which measures water clarity, can indicate treatment problems and affect water usage.
Turbidity Measurements:
Durban: Max 0.6 NTU
Johannesburg: Max 0.63 NTU
Cape Town: Min 2.1 NTU, up to 5 NTU
Bloemfontein: Max 5.46 NTU, with some lower readings
Gqeberha and Pretoria: Occasionally breached acceptable limits
Conclusion:
The output of the water quality will further deteriorate due to the comparison of the 2022 Blue and No Drop Water Report and the 2023 Blue and No Drop Water Report. It is predicted that another dramatic drop in quality will be recorded for the 2024 Blue and No Drop Water Report. Safe drinking water is a concern all South Africans share. At DNA we had the same concern and produced a modernized and improved design of our pre-existing water purifier. The DNA Water Purifier is a countertop appliance that filters the water through 4-stage-osmosis technology so you can have some piece of mind when drinking water in your home.
Juicing: What Is Living Juice and What Is Dead Juice?
Living juice is defined as having all the good compounds and nutrients that dead juice lacks whereas dead juice is filled with preservatives. Living juice is fresh juice, the sooner you drink it the better the nutrient content, because like how fruit can spoil quickly after cutting into it, so does juice. At DNA Health we strive for healthy living and offer four different juicers to best suit your needs. We want to highlight our new DNA Cold Flow Juicer as one of our best products for its easy three-piece assembly and its ability to juice in bulk. Juicing fresh ingredients has many benefits compared to pre-packaged dead juice.
1. Nutrient-Rich Goodness
Juicing allows you to consume a variety of fruits and vegetables in one go. This means youâre getting a concentrated dose of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. For example, a glass of fresh carrot juice is packed with vitamin A, which is essential for eye health, while green juices often contain high levels of vitamin K, crucial for bone health. Dead juice contains little to no nutrients that will benefit you.
2. Improved Digestion
Living juice can be easier on your digestive system compared to eating whole fruits and vegetables. The juicing process breaks down the fibre, making it easier for your body to absorb the nutrients. This can be particularly beneficial for those with digestive issues or anyone looking to give their digestive system a break.
3. Boosted Immunity
Many fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins C and E, both of which are known for their immune-boosting properties. Regularly consuming fresh juice can help strengthen your immune system, making you less susceptible to common illnesses like colds and flu.
4. Increased Energy Levels
Starting your day with fresh juice can give you a natural energy boost. The high concentration of nutrients helps to fuel your body and mind. Providing sustained energy without the crash that often comes from caffeine or sugary snacks. Dead juice too can give you a boost, a sugar-induced boost, which means once youâre off that sugar high youâll crash down hard.
5. Detoxification
Juicing is often associated with detox diets, and for good reason. Fresh living juices can help flush out toxins from your body, thanks to their high water content and the presence of detoxifying compounds like chlorophyll in green vegetables. This can lead to improved skin health, better digestion, and an overall sense of well-being.
6. Weight Management
Incorporating fresh juice into your diet can be a great way to manage your weight. Juices are typically low in calories but high in nutrients, making them a satisfying and healthy option for those looking to shed a few pounds. Just be mindful of the sugar content in fruit juices and try to balance them with vegetable juices. Most dead juices are filled with preservatives and contain artificial sweeteners which will impact your weight negatively.
7. Hydration
Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health, and juicing can help you meet your daily hydration needs. Many fruits and vegetables have high water content, so drinking fresh juice can contribute to your daily fluid intake, keeping you hydrated and your skin glowing.
Tips for Getting Started
It is essential to use fresh produce to really get all the good compounds into your juice as well as peel the necessary fruits and vegetables. This is to avoid consuming the potentially harmful pesticides on the skin. With juicing you can add and mix your ingredients in your own way to find the tastiest combinations that youâll love. It is important that with living juice you should consume it within 24 hours.
Conclusion
Juicing can be a fantastic way to enhance your diet and improve your overall health. By incorporating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables into your juices, you can enjoy a delicious and nutrient-packed beverage. So get yourself the DNA Cold Flow Juicer today at DNA Health!
There are many fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants, which combat cancer cells in your body and reduce the risk of breast cancer. Apart from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women of all races. It has a lifetime risk of 1 in 26 in South Africa, according to the 2022 National Cancer Registry (NCR).
Foods such as leafy green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, citrus fruits, fatty fish, and beans are all made up of compounds. Compounds that exhibit qualities that reduce the risk of breast cancer. We will list specific foods from the categories above that have been proven to reduce the risk of breast cancer. While referencing both completed research and ongoing research.
Vegetables That Fight Cancer:
Leafy green vegetables such as kale, arugula, spinach, mustard greens, and chard contain carotenoid antioxidants, including beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. These antioxidants have been researched and have concluded that they are linked to an 18â28% reduced risk of breast cancer. Cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli contain glucosinolate compounds. These help your body to convert the nutrients into molecules called isothiocyanates that combat cancer cells.
Fruits That Prevent Cancer:
Citrus fruits and their peels are filled with all the good compounds that may protect against breast cancer. These include folate, vitamin C, beta-cryptoxanthin and beta-carotene, flavonoid antioxidants, hesperetin, and naringenin. These are all antioxidants, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory effects, ultimately reducing breast cancer risk by 10%. Fruits and berries protect against cellular damage and the development and spread of cancer cells. In 2013 it was discovered that women who consumed at least two servings of peaches each week had up to a 41% reduced risk of developing estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer.
The Good Protein:
Protein is a challenging topic to link to reducing the risk of any cancer due to the amount of processed meats in the everyday store, however, there are proteins that have contributed to reducing the risk of breast cancer. Fatty fish, including salmon, sardines, and mackerel, are known for their impressive health benefits such as omega-3, selenium and antioxidants. Researchers found that those with the highest intake of seafood sources of omega-3s had up to a 14% reduced risk of breast cancer. Beans are loaded with fibre, vitamins, and minerals that were found to reduce the risk of breast cancer by up to 20%.
Intaking your antioxidants:
Not everyone has time to manage their antioxidant intake or manage their eating habits at all. We have the solution; The DNA Slow Juicer for your leafy greens and the DNA Cold Flow Juicer. These appliances are capable of quick, high-nutrient-packed juice for you to consume from the comfort of your own home. Closing food for thought:
Following a nutritious diet rich in foods like leafy greens, citrus fruits, and fatty fish may help reduce breast cancer risk. It may be equally important to limit or avoid items like alcohol, highly processed meats, and sugary foods and beverages.
Keep in mind that regular medical appointments and breast cancer screenings are critical for early detection and diagnosis. Early detection can lead to effective treatment and a positive prognosis. When breast cancer is detected at an early stage, about 90% of patients survive for many years after diagnosis.
