Title: La Haine
Director/creator/author: Mathieu Kassovitz
Medium: film
Review site link (optional):
Favorite part: the scene with the guys breaking in an abandoned building, and Hubert smoking.
Other critique: the camerawork is stunning, loved that it was in black and white
Connections to other movies/books/games: Le Havre, breaking footage, The Lighthouse
What it made me think about, deeper themes: This was a perfect movie. Through continents and decades, the problems and themes are familiar. Gorgeous camera work, no second is wasted. What an incredible analysis of violence and how glorification of violence destroys humans. How stunning is the contrast between the desire for violence and the disgust the characters feel when they use it? They destroy themselves in attempting to destroy others.
Pairing (with a different form of art): Madvillain by Madvillain

Title: Heat
Director/creator/author: Michael Mann
Medium: Movie
Favorite part: sweeping shots of LA in the evening, the iconic diner talk scene
Other critique: deeply intimate portrayal of two men who are set as antagonists to one another, but in any other circumstance would be friends, companions, masterminds
Connections to other movies/books/games: Infernal Affairs, Kitchen Confidential
What it made me think about, deeper themes: the transience of American life and stability. Neither cop nor criminal has a stable life; maybe it's a reflection of the ever-changing American political and social landscape, the pursual of profit over everything, even some nostalgia for when criminals had their own code of ethics
Pairing (with a different form of art): deserves a late night re-watch, no thoughts on a pairing yet
Trying this out
Title: Logan Lucky
Director/creator/author: Steven Soderbergh
Medium: Movie
Review site link (optional):
Favorite part: When Channing Tatum reveals his secret real bank robbery plan that requires waiting 6 months
Connections to other movies/books/games: Knives Out (Daniel Craig with Southern character), Ocean's 7 11
What it made me think about, deeper themes: disability and how it makes things harder, American masculinity and the stick shift car, the good guys doing well in the end
