Arthur: you don't understand, Merlin. I can't love her. And she can't possibly love me. I don't have that kind of choice!

Merlin: who ever does?

Arthur: don't be smart now. As if you'd know what it felt like, if there was a leash on your emotions. Like.... You're just a farm boy. A servant. You can love whoever you want.

Merlin: so I have nothing to fear?

Arthur: exactly. No one is deciding for you who to love and who to send away. You're not.... Bound by those laws. You could not disappoint my father.

Merlin: love.... Truly is troublesome. *Tries to be subtle and sympathetic* You cannot choose it, you cannot dictate over it. You're dictated by it. Whether you chose to be or not.

*turns to look at Arthur * You're not the only one who has loved someone and had to hide it, you know. You're not the first whose love has been restricted or judged upon. The difference is that you are Uther's son. He can punish you. But people like me....

Arthur: *scoffs*. Name one person you loved that you weren't allowed to care about!

Merlin: *turns silent for a moment* my father.

Arthur:*irritated* your father?

Merlin: *eyes turn away with nostalgia* Freya.

Arthur: who is Freya?

Merlin: once upon a time, Morgana. *His voice is going quiet with emotion* you.

Arthur: Merlin, what are you talking about?

Merlin: *emotional* i guess, if I even cared about myself for one minute, i'd be burning on the pyre in the next. *Shrugs, as if realising that fact only now*

Arthur: Merlin... I didn't know you felt that way -

Merlin: people are taugt to tiptoe around your emotions, Arthur. Because a whim, a bad day, a bad mood, could be the death of anyone who associates with you. You often forget that. You often forget that you walk on people's faces, when you complain about the road ahead.

Arthur: Merlin... I'm... I don't understand.

Merlin: to only fear for my reputation and not my life.... I'd trade all the magic in the world. But then there'd be nothing of me left now, would it? *Turns to look at Arthur.*

Arthur: did you just....you have.... No. No! You can't. That's against the law! It's....

Merlin: *tired* i guess i stopped caring for myself after all.

You ever think how one of the last things Arthur saw Merlin do was cold blooded murder?

Because I do.

Merlin kills Morgana, like he's killed a dozen times.

And I think Arthur can really see that. Like, in that moment, finally, he sees the pain Merlin has carried for such a long time.

The things he did. Hunting hating, animal loving, innocent Merlin, having defied his very nature, just to protect Arthur

I think Arthur can finally see it then. And he finally proves that he cares for Merlin. He sees the sorrow in that cold stare and those cold words and the last thing Arthur does, is validate it.

"you've brought peace at last."

Merlin is a murderer. He's a criminal, he's become everything he used to despise. And Arthur tells him, it was worth it. Despite his own death. And that he knows Merlin is still the same at heart. That he understands why Merlin did it.

It's such a testament to Merlin's character that he takes this monumental praise and still can't bring up a smile. And it's the only thing Arthur can do to Show Merlin that he cares for him. That he doesn't see Merlin's efforts as useless or wrong, but accepts them and sees the worth in them.

It's also such a great move of the show to make everything about Arthur. Literally everything. Until that last episode, when Arthur is dying and suddenly it's about every little move Merlin makes. Every word he says. What he feels. And how much he loves to the point of self destruction.

When you think about it, Uther did have a shred of kindness left in him.

Reasons:

1. He atleast didn't torture nor used magic users for entertainment unlike most other kingdoms that outlawed magic.

2. He truly did love his family.

There's one thing O(mniscient) R(eader's) V(iewpoint), and that anythis possible. Sounds cringey for a wonderful story such as it, but that's just how it is.

Afternoon came, and the Knights reported a magical creature. It was an ENCHANTED PIG, then Arthur took a WHOLE DAY to realize what Merlin's been doing.
