To the left: the graveyard, surrounded by life Souls grasping its tessellated gates—not just humans: Flocks of pigeons, too, flapping feathers among fluttering palm leaves, Glimpsing the rocks that guarded the heads of the dead, finally home.

Beyond: the street, uncertain where its sidewalk ends. People, the words of a hundred languages, the honks of a hundred cars Interspersing, interweaving, inching towards other gates: The courtyard, the garage, of— to the people of this city—a second home.

Ahead: itself, the second home. The masjid, bricks the color of sand, the green dome, Umbrellas in its courtyard, closing to welcome the sunset, The athan from inside, calling to welcome the footsteps Of the people, yearning for home.

To the right: rubble, buildings all lessened To lifelessness, the foundation of an expansion, continuing the cycle of growth. Only one remains: a building, gray domed, tiny, alone, its minaret still standing, a hope for the souls of lost homes.

عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنه، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال: “مَا الْعَمَلُ فِي أَيَّامِ الْعَشْرِ أَفْضَلَ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ فِي هَذِهِ “. قَالُوا :وَلاَ الْجِهَادُ قَالَ :” وَلاَ الْجِهَادُ، إِلاَّ رَجُلٌ خَرَجَ يُخَاطِرُ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ فَلَمْ يَرْجِعْ بِشَىْءٍ. ” صحيح البخاري حديث ٩٦٩

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said, “No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhul Hijja).” Then some companions of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said, “Not even Jihad?” He replied, “Not even Jihad, except that of a man who does it by putting himself and his property in danger (for Allah’s sake) and does not return with any of those things.” Sahih al-Bukhari 969 In-book reference : Book 13, Hadith 18 USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 2, Book 15, Hadith 86

شرح الحديث

يُرشِدُ النَّبيُّ صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم في هذا الحديثِ إلى فَضلِ العملِ الصَّالحِ في العَشْرِ الأوائلِ مِن ذي الحِجَّةِ، وأنَّ أجْرَ العملِ الصَّالحِ فيها يتضاعَفُ ما لا يتضاعَف في سائرِ الأيَّامِ، فسأل الصَّحابةُ رضي الله عنهم النَّبيَّ صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم عن الجهادِ في غيرِ هذه العَشْرِ، هل العملُ الصَّالحُ فيها يفضُلُه أيضًا؟ فأجاب النَّبيُّ صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم بأنْ نَعَم، إلَّا رجلٌ خرَج مخاطرًا بنفسِه ومالِه في سبيلِ الله في غيرِ هذه العَشْرِ، ففقَدَ مالَه وفاضَتْ رُوحُه في سبيلِ الله. وفي هذا الحديث: بيانُ عِظَمِ فضلِ العَشْرِ الأوائل مِن ذي الحِجَّةِ على غيرِها مِن أيَّامِ السَّنة، وفضلِ العملِ الصَّالحِ فيها على العملِ في سائرِ الأيَّامِ، إلَّا الشَّهادةَ في سبيلِ الله على الصِّفة المذكورة.
