SHELTER FOR ALL Our operation takes the homeless off the street and will bring another dimension tomorrow due to the snow. As the weather starts to turn chilly across parts of the country, you may be cozying up in your home and wondering how people without homes handle the changing climate. Unfortunately, many people spending the winter without shelter do not survive the experience. About 700 people who are homeless die from the cold each year in the United States. Even in Greensboro, a city known for its warm weather, cold has been a factor in the deaths of at least nine (19) people over the last five years. That's because hypothermia can occur at temperatures as low as 20 degrees or higher than in wet conditions. You can imagine todayโs weather, with this high inflation going on globally; today was not funny for people without homes, and tomorrow will be worse, projected to be -2- 9 degrees outside. A lot of time when homeless people are forced to fend for themselves outside and try to stay warm as best they can. Here are some of the fundamental ways people who are living on the streets in cold climates manage to get by: Humphrey is a 43-year-old homeless and co doesn't have a place to stay tonight, and a family of 3 called our office today, and there was no vacancy. When they earn enough from panhandling, some spend a rare warm night in a cheap motel; if they don't, they sleep on a bare floor in Downtown Greensboro.
