It was February 2014 and I was homeless for the first time.  I stayed at Pacific Garden homeless shelter for a few days and within a week I was sleeping on an acquaintance's couch in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. I had no money, no job and no food.  After eating my roommates entire jar of peanut butter  I decided to Google search food pantries near me. Lakeview Pantry Oakdale was the nearest, but the North Broadway location was giving food the following day.  After arriving and filling out paperwork it was time to receive food. I was given so much food I needed to borrow a wagon. I can still remember the struggle as I pulled the wagon 2.5 miles home through the snow.  On my first break of many, I decided to eat some avocados. As I stood there eating the avocados tears suddenly began rushing down my face, joy and gratitude overwhelmed me as I thanked our creator. "Lakeview Pantry fed me for nearly 3.5 years" Once a month we received a monthly distribution and every week we received fruits and vegetables.  From this I was able to learn some things about food. The first was how to schedule my eating. The next was the quality and diversity of food I was eating.  Lakeview Pantry had an amazing selection of food including gluten-free options to accommodate my food allergy. Another thing I learned was how to prepare all these new and diverse foods.  All this led to a more disciplined style of eating. Which would lead to me becoming vegetarian and later becoming vegan. Two years before arriving at Lakeview Pantry I weighed 245 lbs and was in the worst shape of my life.  This is when I decided to change. When I arrived at Lakeview food pantry I weighed around 200 lbs. and I got down to 175lbs. I also had the opportunity to volunteer at Lakeview Pantry for a few months. A year after leaving Lakeview Pantry I went vegan and got down to 155 lb and in the best shape of my life.  Super grateful that Lakeview Pantry came into my life.
