Shelby closed the menu when Carrie arrived. She looked as well put together as usual if a little thinner. It didn’t take much detective work to assume exactly why the Switch had lost weight. “Hello, sweetheart,” she greeted. It took Shelby all of two seconds to zero in on Carrie’s bare neck. Her sharp eyes went from neck to eyes, one eyebrow raising in question.
It surprised Shelby that Carrie had taken it off. She assumed that Carrie would end up wearing it indefinitely. Shelby had tried to make peace with the fact that her friend would continue to hold onto something that would take up most of her life. It bothered Shelby that this woman who had so much potential was now going to be identified only by this failed relationship. Shelby’s ire for Lindsay seemed to grow by the day and she wasn’t sure that she would be able to forgive her friend should she ever reappear in her life. It was just the latest in a long line of losses for Shelby and she wondered if it was tragic or a sign of strength that she was coping so well.
Giving Carrie time to read the menu, she called over the waiter when they were ready and waited until she received her glass of wine to delve into deeper topics than simply how their summer was going. “You took it off,” she said simply.
Carrie flashed a smile at the greeting and took a seat across from the other woman, mirroring her actions and taking a look at the menu. It was a quiet little Italian restaurant and Carrie knew what she wanted without looking at the menu, but she did so anyways. If anything, she could indulge in a glass or two of wine. Especially since she didn’t have to operate a vehicle of any kind. It couldn’t hurt.
Once she settled on her wine choice, she helped herself to some bread that was situated in between them and tore off a piece. She didn’t realize how hungry she was until she agreed to meet the other woman for lunch. when realization set in that she had managed to skip breakfast, yet again. Though it wasn’t just he food that drew the doctor out. She knew Shelby was in the city and while she had the urge to contact her everyday, she wanted to give her the space she knew the Domme wanted and the last thing she wanted to do was bother her. At least not with recent events.
Shelby’s voice pulled her from her thoughts and at first she was confused. At least until her words finally registered and she noticed the other woman’s eyes on her neck. Carrie, pressed her fingertips to her newly exposed skin and she offered a nod. It still felt odd to have so much of her skin exposed. Not only that, but she also felt a little lighter. Lighter and emptier. “I left my collar as well as my engagement ring with her mother when I went to go visit her. I figured it’s in good care there.”

Shelby had done enough this summer to keep herself busy all in avoidance of going home. It was at the insistence of her mother that she finally was forced to give in and visit her in Long Island. She took the train to the city often, visiting old friends and theaters mostly by herself. Even her mother began to mention that she should find some company and while Shelby simply scoffed, she did find herself lonely.
Too stubborn to do anything about it, Shelby found ways to occupy her days with cleaning her mother’s house and running errands. One morning, Shelby’s mother finally had enough and threw her hands up, telling her that she was going crazy with her daughter’s restlessness. She called Carrie then and there and told her to take Shelby out for the sake of her sanity. Shelby had glared at her mother with enough venom to kill another person but it was just her luck that her mother was the only person immune. After all, Shelby had learned that glare from her.
Stepping from the train and getting to street level, Shelby walked the few blocks to the small restaurant where she was due to have lunch with the Switch. The maitre d seated her first and Shelby studied the wine list as she waited for the other woman.
The Summer found Carrie wandering around New York aimlessly. After bidding Mrs. Shane goodbye, along with her collar and ring, she stayed in the heart of Manhattan and found numerous things to do to keep herself busy. She visited old friends from when she worked in the city, did a good amount of shopping, and even went to a show or two. But most of her spare time was spent sitting in her hotel room, dreading upcoming school year and her return to Roselle. The silver lining was that she loved her job, but everything else seemed like it was going to be impossible to get through. The disappearance of Lindsay as well as the disassembled relationship she had with Shelby.
It was safe to say that Carrie was surprised when Shelby’s mom gave her a call and she was all too eager to agree to the lunch the older woman planned for her and her friend. The Switch spent far too long picking out her clothes and found that she was running late when it was already too late. She rushed to the restaurant and immediately caught sight of the Domme already waiting. She fixed her hair and nearly bum-rushed the table as she made her presence known.
“Hi, Miss. Sorry I’m late.”

Shelby: Then what would you change?
Carrie: My being so gullible.

Shelby: Or you would be a different person...
Shelby: Perhaps it would be a good thing.
Carrie: I like that I'm reliable. I never want to change that.

Shelby: You are. Perhaps I thought with the change in circumstance it would also bring a change of character.
Shelby: I was mistaken.
Carrie: If I changed my characteristics every time circumstances changed, there would be nothing of me left.

Shelby: You did. I did not expect you to follow through. I thought simply you expressed it to tease.
Carrie: Have I ever not fallen through before, Miss? I always thought I was good at keeping my word.
