Dwight Enys Appreciation Week ⣠Favourite Scene
My desire to return to the navy is not for want of love for you. But for want of not knowing how to live in this world. This place, lovely as it is, it now seems alien to me. Accustomed to the cries of wounded men, the quiet⌠appalls me. Iâve slept so long on filthy straw that soft linen now seems wanton luxury. Having slept in the shadow of the firing squad the least noise makes me scream and every breath I take makes me feel guilt⌠that I am here and others are not. You think me ungrateful if I decline an invitation or some delicacy youâve prepared but in truth Iâve no appetite for food or society. What I wish is to hide away, until the world no longer seems strange to me. Is that why Ross sent for Hugh Armitage? There is a- there is a kind of bond between men who have seen atrocities and survived, a need to talk, until all the horror is talked away. Iâll not have you hear such things, but until Hugh came I knew not how to be rid of them. And are you now rid of them? Itâs- itâs a beginning. Can you bear with me? I can bear anything now that I know Iâve not lost your love.

His own voice sounded strange on his ears. Cracked, breathless and unfamiliar. The noises, the smellsââthey were all indistinguishable, alien and foul. He remembered shouting; men shouting and cannon fire, and the pounding of the sea around him. Even now, his ears rang with it. The taste of salt on his lips, the smell of gunpowderââof sweat and of blood. The screams of men as they fought and were cut down. Men he knew, had known, blown to pieces all around him. His gut lurched. He wanted to be sick, thenââto retch, and go on retching until there was naught left in him of that time. But nothing came up. His muscles wouldnât seize. It was a sickness of the mind.
He could scarce feel his legsââhis arms, his fingers. His head was pounding. Slowly pounding, or was that the sound of the cannons, of waves breaking against the sides of the ship? Splintering woodââsplintering bone as men fell through the battered, broken deckââand the Espion, groaning, masts snapping as she capsized and was sucked down. Down into the water below.
The waterââeverywhere, the water. Men in the water, blood in the waterââbodies struggling around him, clinging to life, pushing under the dead ones and the weak ones in a monstrous struggle to survive. The horror of itââthe sheer inhumanity, the likes of which he had never witnessed before. And him, drowning, the sea filling up his lungs. Couldnât breathe, dying. All around him, death and darkness and dying. He shook with itââshook with it, even now. If there was a God, He had forsaken them all.
And where was he?
He wanted to ask, but couldnât begin to form the words. He felt heavy. So heavy. He mightâve been crushed still under the weight of the water. But everything felt dry. âTake my handâ, someone was saying, in a voice that sounded as if it were a thousand miles away. âTake my hand, squeeze itâââso he did, fingers closing with the little vigor they could muster, as weakly, he nodded his head. Heâd been asked. Didnât know what for. Dim light and murky color blinked to life in front of his eyes as his lids flickered open and closed againââhe thought there was a man kneeling beside himââbut he could make out none of it clearly. Whether he was dead, or only dying, he could not have said. Did not know.
The doctor was not unfamiliar with the horrors of war. What came hand in hand with patriotism was death, bloodshed and everlasting trauma. Even now, the doctor tossed and turned in his own sweat at night-- fear that his own body would forsake him and he would be lost to the sea again. This... This boy-- Dwight could not bare to think about what he had seen, what they had seen. Not now, anyway.Â
The first squeeze was feeble, barely even there. Dwight was sure it was nothing more than a twitch for the first few seconds but the fragile blinking of the eyes and the boyâs almost lifeless breathing told him otherwise. He was there-- perhaps not all there but there nonetheless.
âThatâs good, Hugh.â Enys made sure to constantly address him, letting him know that somebody was there beside him that knew his name, that knew his troubles. He had only wished that someone had done the same for him when he was the one buried in sand and bodies. There was a comfort to hearing your name.
Dwight waited for Hugh to nod- as weak as it may have been- and immediately commenced undressing the soldier. The hero. First he carefully (but efficiently) removed the outer coat. He propped him up with that after, allowing the liquid to move around the body a little freer. Then came the now shredded white shirt; he peeled it off the boy with gentle hands and tossed it aside.Â
âOkay, Hugh. This will hurt a little bit, okay? I do not have all of my equipment with me so I will need to make do.â And so he did. Dwight always carried some instruments with him-- namely a syringe, a vaccination needle, and a small plastic tube. None were ideal without the medicine required but time was something they both lacked.
âI need to puncture a small hole in your lung- it will not be as painful as you think but it will certainly sting.â Dwight assured the patient. He knew that it likely would hurt every bit as much as Hugh would expect-- as anyone would expect. To have a foreign object pierce the skin and an organ? That was not intended when God created the human body.Â
Enys took the needle and tube and fused them together using a small strip of cotton that he tore from the discarded shirt. He was thankful that it had landed on a rock, for sand entering the body would cause even more issues. He counted to three but upon reaching two, he had already penetrated the skin and lung. He was hoping that Hugh was too disorientated to feel much but that was doubtful.Â
âOkay, Hugh. Take as deep of a breath as you can- I know it is difficult but I need you to try your very best. You will feel a lot of pressure on your chest but that will last no longer than a few seconds. Ready? Go!â

Woah, top notch Ross impulse control!
"I can't move my leg."
âI understand.â Dwight assured Danielle. âI am going to hand you this stake. If you will, please bite down on it and refrain from moving too much. I need to reset your kneecap and I assure you, it will not be pleasant.â
In fact, Enys had left out the more worrying news that her nerves could possibly have been damaged alongside her kneecap. That could mean permanent loss of feeling and control in her leg- possibly even both. Still, he would assess each step one by one before jumping to conclusions.
âExcellent. Now... 1, 2--â He pushed the kneecap back into place before she could expect it. That way, he could reduce the anxiety she would feel. Or so he had hoped, at least. âWell done! I know you are in pain, Danielle, but I need to move you somewhere where i am able to assess the damage further. Would you be okay with me carrying you there?â
"I can't breathe."
âI need you to take my hand. Squeeze it as hard as you can, Hugh, okay?â Enys spoke gently, his voice calm and soft unlike the waves that had engulfed the boy before him.
There was a wound on Hughâs forehead in the upper right corner. It resided just under the hairline and fell close to his eye. He had been lucky that all he suffered was that and a mild concussion.
âKeep squeezing it, Hugh. I am going to remove your top layers, as I need to drain the liquid from your lungs. Nod if you understand.â He waited for his response before proceeding.

Injuries Reference List
If youâre writing anything where your characters are getting injured a lot, it might be helpful to have an injuries reference list on hand. WELL, DONâT WORRY ABOUT IT BECAUSE I CREATED ONE. This is mostly the result of me having to look up something every time a character was gravely injured/being a lifeguard for seven years. I have some knowledge of first aid and how it might apply to the characters in your story.
Simple scrapes/cuts: Thereâs usually not much to worry about besides MAYBE an infection, which can be avoided with rubbing alcohol or peroxide. Remember, peroxide usually doesnât burn or sting, but rubbing alcohol probably will. These injuries will bleed for a short amount of time, but it shouldnât last too long.
Bruising: These occur when the blood vessels break under the skin, forming discoloration of the skin. The colors can vary, but they are usually purplish, bluish, or yellow. Again, this injury is usually not serious if itâs a result of a bump or cut, but if thereâs significant bruising over a large area of the body there might be a serious problem. Usually time heals bruising.
Sprains: A sprain is torn or stretched ligament, but it is NOT a break. It is very common for someone to sprain an ankle or a wrist and it usually doesnât require serious medical attention. The area might swell and should be iced. Sprains are usually treated with rest and a device that compresses the areaâsuch as a sling or a bandage.
Broken bones (arms, fingers, legs, toes): Breaks can be serious, especially if they have to be set back into place. A person will most likely not be able to put pressure on a broken bone until it is healed (which could take weeks). A broken bone is REALLY serious when it fractures or breaks through the skin completely. If you write a character in this sort of situation, they will need to worry about infection and they might have to wait until the swelling goes down before splitting or covering.
Burns: Obviously, there are different degrees of burns, but simple burns will most likely be treated the same. Even the smallest burns will probably sting like hell, so it can be hard to function with an untreated burn. SERIOUS burns might require amputation (Iâm talking about maybe 3rd to 4th degree burns). As a 1st degree burn is healing, it might itchâthink how sunburn starts to itch after a while.
Broken back: A broken back can lead to paralysis, so you need to be very careful with how you treat someone. Your characters shouldnât be throwing anyone over their shoulders with a back injury because it will only lead to more serious problems. If you suspect that someone has broken or injured their back, you need to keep them still until there is a way to safely move them.
Amputation: This happens when the removal of a body part because necessary to someoneâs survival. If someone has a bad infection or thereâs no way to stop the bleeding (youâve applied a tourniquet, which will most likely end up causing an amputation later), a character might have to amputate in a serious situation.
Dislocated limb: If a bone âpopsâ out of its socket, a character might have to put it back into place. A dislocated limb restricts movement, so your character might not be able to go forward until the situation is resolved. Arms and fingers are commonly dislocated and there will probably be pain when theyâre set back into place. Those limbs should be rested and iced to prevent swelling.
Jammed fingers: If you get your finger caught in a door, for example, and it doesnât break; you might have a jammed finger. Iâve had a few of these in my life, which usually causes bruising and some pain, but it heals on its own. These types of injuries can be from jamming your fingers against something hard and you might lose a finger nail. They will most likely hurt for a while until they are healed.
Stab wounds: These are usually deep cuts by a knife or a sword or another sharp object. They need to be treated, as they are prone to infection, and they should be bandaged. If the bleeding is excessively bad, a common way to stop the bleeding is to get stitches or cauterize the wound. Cauterization is the process of burning the wound in order to seal it up. Think of lightsabers in Star Wars. No one bleeds when theyâre cut because the âbladeâ of the lightsaber cauterizes the wound as it cuts. Your characters might have to stitch someone or cauterize someone in an emergency situation.
Gunshot wounds: Getting shot is a serious/life threatening situation, so your characters would need immediate medical attention. In an emergency situation, the bullet might have to be dug out and the wound cauterized if the bleeding is severe. If the bullet goes in and out, you might just have to worry about infection and covering the wound. A gunshot wound will be painful and will take a while to heal. If someone is shot in the leg, they will have trouble walking. The limbs will need time to heal.
Poisoning: This is a wide topic that could include food poisoning to being poisoned by another character, but they will probably feel very sick. Symptoms will include vomiting, dehydration, diarrhea, etc. Your character might get severe stomach aches and will not be able to function.Being poisoned can be deadly and can happen quickly. A medicine called Ipecac will induce vomiting in order to get the poisons out of someoneâs symptoms, but will not work for EVERYTHING. Further treatment might be necessary.
Stomach wound: A person with a stomach wound will not last very long without addressing it. If it is deep enough, it will kill off your character unless the bleeding and infection can be stopped. Infection is usually what kills people with stomach wounds or gunshot wounds.
This is a list to be used for WRITING purposes only. Obviously you should call a doctor or get emergency treatment if something is serious. I also wrote this list assuming that your characters donât have access to medical professionals, so keep that in mind. Hope this helps!
-Kris Noel
Athenna was waiting on her porch. Her house was rather warm in the summer months so she needed to cool down. She watched the road that led to her house, hoping her doctor had received her letter that she was back in town. She used a fan to keep cool as she began to daydream. ((Hi!!))
Word had indeed reached the doctor that his former patient, Athenna, was back in Cornwall, though he knew not why. He had hoped that it was just to visit old friends, himself included, but he felt it best to make sure.
After having tended to his last patient of the day- a very slow day, he thought to himself- Dwight made his way via horseback to Athennaâs modest residence. Upon arriving, he tied Addy (his mare) to the wooden posts in the courtyard.Â
Knock! Knock! went his fist against the door. He felt undeniably excited to see the blonde for a reason he could not fathom.
âAthenna!â Dwight greeted, bowing at the waist momentarily. âI was glad to hear of your return.â
A hug was not expected but it was most certainly welcomed. The doctor embraced the blonde tightly, his arms wrapping around her slender frame with ease. As she pulled away, he beamed happily at her.
âDinner?â Dwight repeated, pleasantly surprised by her everlasting hospitality. âI must say, I am rather hungry! Thank you, Athenna- you are always so welcoming.â
It was noon when he had reached her house and the doctor had little more to eat than an apple. Contrary to popular belied- an apple a day does no keep Dwight away.Â
Enys followed her to the sitting room where he took a seat opposite her. He had only really been here as a doctor; this felt odd to him but in a rather new and pleasing way. Closer, if you will.
âWhat brings you back to Cornwall, if you do not mind my asking?â
