I started taking photographs of mostly birds in early 2024 as a hobby to get me out from behind a computer and out of the house more often. I thought I'd start posting some of them on here.

Let's start with this photograph of a goldcrest I took in February this year since it's one of my favourites. Goldcrests are tied with their close cousin the Firecrest as the UK's smallest bird, and this one was particularly adorable.

From today's lunch break - a blue tit bringing a good sized meal to its chicks in a very colourful nest box in the park.

Meanwhile in the woods today baby bird season is in full swing. Two nuthatch nests and one recently fledged family group, swarms of long-tailed tits, and many more besides.

This is one of the juvenile blue tits that was pursuing its parents through the trees begging to be fed.

A lot of the birds at the wetland centre yesterday were really feeling the heat. The corvids especially where sitting around with their beaks open, and some of the jackdaws were just flopping down in the grass on their bellies with their wings spread out.

This crow at least had the bright idea of taking a dip in the water.

The equipment I use for wildlife photography is currently away for repair, but this family of greylag geese were close enough to photograph with a 75mm lens and more basic camera.

If you like goslings and you're in London, consider heading to Regent's Park - right now there are dozens of them, at every age and stage from tiny fluffballs nestled under their parents' wings to semi-fledged teenagers. There were loads round the southwest side of the boating lake, near the mosque.

This great crested grebe and its mate don't seem to have succeeded in building a nest so far this year, though another pair elsewhere on the reserve are already carrying their chick around on their backs (sadly I didn't get any good photos of that).

It's the season for all the birds that live in the reed beds to start yelling very loudly. This is one of many reed buntings I saw flying about, clinging to reeds, and calling. The reed warblers have also all arrived now but they're a lot stealthier - I could hear them making their slightly nonsensical calls all over the place but only caught a couple of glimpses of them.

This grey heron was jumping around slightly oddly. In the end I worked out it had probably got something caught on its foot and was trying to dislodge it.

A pair of great crested grebes at the wetland centre. They were certainly working on a nest of some sort, but no sign of any eggs yet.

The jays around here are usually very skittish and fly away before I get anywhere near them. Early this morning, this one was willing to pose briefly on a post and have its photo taken.

This starling had a lot to shout about. Making a fine selection of the strange noises they tend to come out with.

I'm still not very good at identifying the various warblers on sight. Luckily some of their calls are much easier to identify. The Cetti's warbler in particular is very distinctive, and this one was good enough to yell whilst I was looking at it.
