Although I guess more accurately, I’ve never been away from home at all.
The stars above us are the same ones I watched from The Prism, but another waft of natural air drags me back down from space.
I’m here. I’m on a Planet.
The moonlight veils the distant mountains around the monastery and I can barely make out some feathered fauna flying past in the dark.
My fingertips graze against moss growing on the rooftop, soft, fuzzy and unfamiliar. I pull away.
“Do you miss it?” Lloyd quietly asks,
Clouds breeze across the sky, obscuring my view. Suddenly the only semblance of home I can see are the boots on my feet.
“I think I miss… the normality..” I almost couldn’t find the words.
I used to dream of this. Leaving The Prism, living life on a planet away from the overwhelming pursuit of survival.
I knew that living on a planet would be unexpected. Filled with things I didn’t understand no matter how much I read through what was left of the archives.
Yet, there’s a chill in my chest and a restlessness in my stomach as though my brain forgot to tell the rest of my body what was happening.
I’m breathing real air in an atmosphere, I’m touching real, natural, plant life, I’m experiencing a life where I’m allowed to enjoy things.
Is this not everything I ever wanted?
Lloyd’s hand reaches for mine as a silent gesture of support.
But no matter how kind his intentions…
Affection also feels so foreign to me.
We stay on the monastery roof like this for most of the night, and I find myself unable to tear away from the stars. If the clouds are far enough in my peripherals it almost feels like I'm back on the space station, looking through that window again.
But it doesn’t comfort me anymore.
