A brief backstory: Grace, having discovered that taumoeba evolved to acquire the ability to penetrate xenonite, heads back to Rocky's ship to save him. But Ryland doesn't make it in time: Rocky's engines have failed, and the life support system, which ran on the same power source, has shut down. Due to abnormally high temperatures and depressurization of the cooling systems, Rocky simply got boiled alive and died, unable to do anything about the situation. After the death of his best friend, Ryland suffers from intense guilt and nightmares, in which Rocky constantly haunts him to remind who is to blame for his death.
