He needed to save John. Mary hadn't really needed to tell him that; he'd been a genius back then and would likely have figured it out for himself, eventually. But Mary had been right that Sherlock wouldn't know how. After all, he'd tried to save her once and look how that had turned out.
And on top of that he needed to figure out what to do about Mr Pouchy-faced Serial Killer whose daughter had been almost as good as John. Maybe if he were really clever, he might even be able to figure out how to do both at the same time.

Reveals are up for the Holmstice exchange over on Dreamwidth; above is the link for the fic I wrote: Mycroft POV, a bit of Holmes family drama, Gen. No plot to speak of, though, so a bit atypical for me in that regard. If I’m being entirely honest, it’s dreadfully dull, as the recipient wanted a happy ending.

I was actually quite shy at school, and I had a stammer so I went to a speech therapist to help me with exams and we did a bit of acting and I thought, ohh, this seems good. I was in Weston Super Mare in a huge school, and I was terrible at school. I left when I was 15 without any O levels. So I had no real options. I did some comic monologues, touring round the West country, and I did alright in those. And then the circus came into town and they’d lost a clown. Very carelessly! So I got on a bus & walked into the tent and said hello! The Government actually paid me 25 quid a week on a youth training scheme, well no - they paid the circus, to train me as a clown. Drama school would have been great, but I just didn’t have any money to get a grant as I had no O levels. I was just so naive and I was just from this small West Country town so I didn’t know how to do it. So I just joined the circus as my only way.

Rupert really is fantastic, isn’t he? No connected parents, no RADA, no riding the coattails of more talented people. Guts, a dash of obliviousness and lots of bloody hard work, married to (obviously) natural talent.

I’m still pissed they didn’t do anything with Moran; such potential for a villain: posh, connected and devious. I mean, for two men who claim to be lefties, Moffat and Gatiss didn’t see fit to get more out of this than 1/3 of an episode? Pshaw, I say!
22 years ago, Quebec narrowly voted to remain part of Canada in a referendum on independence. This map that shows the majority vote by each provincial constituency. The winning “No” vote was concentrated in cities, while the “Yes” vote was more geographically spread out.

One of the real highlites of the extraordinarily ugly campaign was Quebec politicians and press telling Canadians that we weren’t allowed to express an opinion on the referendum in public. Apparently, a vote on whether or not to tear our country apart (in which less than 20% of the electorate was allowed to participate) was “none of your business”. Because reminding Quebecers just how much the rest of the country subsidizes them was “bullying them” with facts.
Infamously, after losing, Quebec Premier Jacques Parizeau blamed “money and ethnic votes” for the separatists’ loss, a comment which thankfully drove a stake into the heart of the separatist movement for about two decades, and (less thankfully) probably made a significant contribution to the resurgence of the Conservatives in Western Canada.
Unfortunately, Parizeau’s particular form of bigotry (how dare other people have different opinions than moi and if they do they’re evil, evil I tell you) is something we still hear coming out of the mouths of Canadian wanna-be politicians today, particularly on the left.

Last line I’ve written in a WIP, not last line for the WIP? Whatevs, I just discovered three day panic attacks and how much my brain hates me. I need something hopeful.

Egads...I've spent the last week wrestling with Sherlock's first overdose and the aftermath. The following is from the middle of a long, rambling conversation between Sherlock and Mycroft the following day: Once Sherlock was huddled under the blankets again, Mycroft stood back and waited for the adrenal surge of fear to pass before he risked saying anything else. Not that he had any idea what to say. There likely was nothing he could say to Sherlock in this state of mind that wouldn’t make things worse, but he had to at least try. “I don’t know what you want—” “I want you to stop ‘managing’ me. You and Mummy—” “You’re fifteen years old, Sherlock. There’s a reason why the law—” Mycroft stopped as Sherlock groaned, as if the words themselves were causing him physical pain. He rolled over and at the edge of Mycroft’s hearing he began to chant again, “Shut up shut up shut up.” “We’re only trying to do what’s best for you—” “Lies, lies, lies. You and Mummy both, the biggest liars on earth, both of you. Lies and secrets and plots, that’s all either of you are good for, so just fuck off and leave me alone, Mike. I’m not listening to you anymore.” “Fine. But I’m going to say what I came here to say, regardless.” “Of course you are, you fatuous gasbag.”
