I'm rewatching Adam 12 (again) and honestly I am impressed with the progression of the relationship between Reed and Malloy. It naturally flows from a mentorship to a partnership, and episode by episode the viewer sees Malloy hold Reed's hand less and less, but this is never explicitly addressed. It's really well-done.
