White-lipped Herald Snake - Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia

This handsome snake is Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia (Colubridae), an African species which is also commonly referred to as Red-lipped Snake by its distinctive red lips. This is one of the most common snakes in mesic habitats, including lowland swamps and marshes, in the eastern regions of southern Africa. 

Perhaps the most striking feature of this snake is its irascible behavior when disturbed, when it forms a striking coil, flattens its head to show off the iridescent black temporal patches, and strikes viciously if molested.

The common name “Herald Snake” was allegedly coined in honour of the “Eastern Province Herald” newspaper.

I put together this 6 foot boa constrictor skeleton. She was one of my snakes, and died over the Christmas holiday 2014, when I left her in a friend’s care, while visiting family. I posted this finished skeleton to my facebook a couple days ago, and was absolutely floored to receive a message from the Smithsonian. Wow……..certainly wasn’t expecting that. Here’s one of the first snake skeletons I did, 3 years ago.

It looks like Shane Whitaker and Nick Boles of Quality Serpents are clearing out their collection, including the Paradox Orange Dream Ivory Ball Python they produced this year. They’re not sure what to ask for her the so they are taking offers until December 13th to see what their options are. There’s no doubt that you’ll need deep pockets to get your hands on this one of a kind babe.
