Someone told me the other day they knew my niece was one of the people I loved most in this world and it’s true. I think she knows I love her, we have an incredible bond but my wish is that we have this bond her whole life. When she’s 6 and crying because her mommy told her she can’t have that toy she wanted because her birthday is coming up or 15 and mad her dad found out about some boy she was hiding from him, when she’s 23 and just needs extra support, when she’s 30 and her spouse is driving her insane, or 50 and just needs someone who loves her for her. I just hope she never feels like she can’t come to me with the good and the bad. I hope she always feels safe with me. I hope she she reaches all of her dreams and allows me to support her while she works towards them. I want to still be the arms she runs to when she feels unsure when she’s a teenager and the one she runs to when she gets excited about something. This little one has no idea how loved and adored she is. Being an aunt is a beautiful role, you get to be the best friend they do ornery things with, the goofy one who spoils them and the only person in the world who will protect them as fiercely and fearlessly as their parents.
