It’s been quite a while, hasn’t it? Well it’s that time of the year again, which means I get to write out a list of ten video games that I thought were awesome in the year 2017. Despite being busy translating and editing video game text for work, I somehow found time to finish approximately 30x more games this year. In the name of research. Or something.
Boy oh boy has there been a whole lot of good games. Everything from massive AAA titles to tiny little indie darlings. Free experiments and expensive 150 hour adventures across time and space.
This is not an objective list, but it is 100% the absolute truth and all other lists are full of shit. Fuck those lists. Fuck my list. FUCK THE POPO.
Let’s rock.
For what it’s worth, there are a TON of other games I adored this year that didn’t end up making the list. Titles I’m still playing like Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, or Fire Emblem Echoes (amazing localization). Just because they’re not on this list doesn’t mean they aren’t every bit as fun. This was a packed year.
10. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
I’m cheating.
I have not beaten Xenoblade Chronicles 2 yet. I’m 85 hours in and on chapter 7, but I have not beaten the game. I desperately wanted to include it on this list, and quite frankly, would have put it much closer to the bottom. It’s just that good. However, I figured it’d be unfair to do so considering I haven’t even come close to seeing the end credits.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the best big budget PS2/Dreamcast JRPG that never saw the light of day until now.
That’s about the best compliment I can afford it.
9. Gravity Rush 2
So the original Gravity Rush was one of my favorite games the year it first released for the Vita. Despite the load times and some of the muddy visuals, I found Kat’s bizarre tale of gravity bending madness to be equal parts charming and dark. Coupled with the legendary Kohei Tanaka’s score, I couldn’t help but be dazzled by her ability to travel through the air like a rocket. I spent years waiting for a sequel that would wrap up her story. I’m glad I got one.
It has its issues (the quest design and some of the pacing), but Gravity Rush 2 is still mostly everything I wanted from the end of Kat’s story. Beautiful world design crossed with fun traversal, an amazing soundtrack, and a whimsical little cast of characters means that even almost a full year removed from its release, I still think back fondly on the game.

8. Resident Evil 7
It’s so good to have you back, babe. I missed the shit out of you.
I used to be one of the biggest Resident Evil fans this side of the east coast. I’ll never forget Christmas Day many years ago, when I opened up two boxes to find a Playstation console and a copy of Resident Evil 2 (and no memory card WHOOPS). But since then, things have taken a turn for the worse. I enjoyed Resident Evil 5 for what it was, but it was starting to feel like something else entirely.
And then Resident Evil 6 happened, and I couldn’t get more than a few hours in before getting angry.
Yet somehow Capcom managed to win me back. Somehow Resident Evil 7 reminded me of what I used to love about the series. It certainly didn’t hurt that I played the entire thing in VR and loved every second of it.
Bring on RE8.
7. The Evil Within 2
And the award for most improved sequel goes to... The Evil Within 2. A wonderful surprise and return to form for producer Shinji Mikami and his team. If you like good survival horror, this will be your jam. Fixes every single issue with the original game, at least in my opinion.
Bethesda dropped the ball on marketing this game, but don’t let that stop you from experiencing one helluva time.
6. New DanganRonpa V3
The less said about this one the better. Try to go in blank if you can.
Some people aren’t fond of the direction this one takes. I don’t think it could have gone any other way. The perfect way to end this franchise, should this truly be the end.
5. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III
But Elliot, how is this game not higher on your list!?
The answer is actually simple. I’ve stopped really approaching each entry of the series as independent games. They’re just chapters in one larger saga. No single game is my favorite. The series as a whole is my favorite.
Cold Steel III cut me deep. The game takes the format of the original CS, improves on it, and then shakes things up to the point where you’re not even sure where you’re standing anymore. I can’t count how many times I screamed at fellow series fans, shook by what had just taken place. This series continues to blow my mind time and time again, and the wait for Cold Steel IV couldn’t possibly feel any longer than it does right now.
4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I don’t like 3D Zelda games. Let’s just get that out there. I never liked Ocarina of Time. I never liked Majora’s Mask. I enjoyed Wind Waker the most out of the bunch (but still nowhere close to my love for the 2D games). I hated Twilight Princess and I had zero interest in Skyward Sword and its motion controls.
I also don’t like open world games very much.
A 3D open world Zelda game? Well now you’re talking my language...?
Any other year and this would have been an easy number one. Too bad that 2017 is packed with killers.
I can’t wait to go back and play the DLC.
3. PUBG
Man, what a surprise. I haven’t been THIS into a realistic multiplayer shooter since my days of playing Call of Duty 4 endlessly during its beta test on the 360.
To be honest, I’m not even sure if it’s the game I’m in love with so much as it’s the moments with friends I’ve gotten to experience within the game. I only ever play in team matches, but every single round is like some dumb action movie starring me and my pals, and even when things go poorly, they typically go poorly in the stupidest way humanly possible. I’ve played so many hours of PUBG that I’m scared to check the exact number.
I want to play this game with every single one of my friends. It’s that kind of experience.
2. Dragon Quest XI
I think the funniest thing about Dragon Quest XI’s place on this list is that in any other year, this shouldn’t have been close. That just goes to show you how absurd 2017 has been for video games.
The less said about the journey of DQXI the better. All I’ll say is that it is simultaneously the perfect jumping point for franchise newcomers while also being the most beautiful, glorious love letter to those who have been there since the beginning. This is quite possibly one of my favorite games of all time, and if you manage to make it to the true end without being at least a little bit moved, you might not have a soul.

1. NieR: Automata
Was there ever any questioning this? What else is there to write about this game that people much smarter than me haven’t already? It’s oppressive, it’s suffocating, it’s joyous, it’s hopeful, it’s hopeless, it’s crushing, it’s tear-inducing, it’s a breath of air after emerging from deep within the water. NieR: Automata is a very special game, made by an extremely talented group of men and women who should have been recognized for their talents a long, long time ago.
Much time has passed since Drakengard, that bizarre and kind of terrible but fascinating PS2 game, first hit shelves and got dumped on. But now, finally, Yoko Taro and his close collaborators are finally getting the chance to step out into the light.

This is going to be something of a more personal post. There’s some stuff on my mind that I really just wanted to get down somewhere.
Boy oh boy, 2016 sure was a year. It’s not difficult for me to feel like the whole world came crashing down on me this year. Car accidents, lawsuits, willingly turning down work so I can help people, falling through stairs and almost fucking my whole lower body up, everything in the news and in politics. I learned a hard lesson about what adulthood means and the painful truths that come with that. I learned that no matter how many times you turn away from something and pretend you didn’t see it, eventually there will come a time when you have to confront it, and by then it’ll probably be way too late. I learned what it’s like to lose a part of yourself without knowing how to replace what’s missing.
But for all that shittiness, for all that garbage that was thrown at me (and so much at my family in general), there are a lot of things I’m tremendously grateful for.
2016 was the year that I accomplished one of my long time dreams of becoming a professional translator, specifically in games. Ever since high school I’ve had a tendency of mapping out my goals in life. making loose timelines for how I want things to go in an ideal world. I’ve never been a very confident person when it comes to my own skills (much to my parents’ chagrin), but having a plan always helped me to put things into perspective. Living in Japan for five years was a calculated move to let me work on my Japanese, meet cool interesting people, and maybe start putting my foot through the door. Coming home in 2015, I wanted to believe that I’d done everything I could on that end. So when opportunity came knocking out of seemingly nowhere earlier in 2016, I jumped at it even though it seemed a bit faster than I had planned.
And let me tell you, the time I spent on my first project, as stressful and mentally taxing as it could be, was the most fun I’ve ever had earning a paycheck. One of my biggest goals in life, ever since I was a child, was to hopefully end up in a job that I enjoyed and loved doing. I watched my dad work all my life, and while he was and still is amazing at what he does, I know he doesn’t enjoy it. The people the environment, the blatant bigotry on display everywhere you turn. My parents have both always been very good at supporting me and what I wanted to do, and impressing upon me that they wanted me to be happy with whatever I do. It’s an amazing feeling.
I also got the chance to become much closer to a lot of people I’ve always had a great deal of respect for, but could never really work up the courage to take the next step forward with. This year has been hard on me socially because I’m so far from pretty much all my closest friends. And so I’m extremely grateful to all the amazing new and old people I’ve gotten to know better over the last year. I owe a lot of people drinks in the near future.
I know a lot of people have had a very rough, scary year, and there’s no guarantee that 2017 will be any better. All I can do is tell you to keep your chin up and keep doing the things you love with the people you care about. Keep working toward your goals. Keep finding new goals to strive for.
I’m not gonna let this shitty back end of 2016 fuck up the momentum going into 2017. Aw hell no.
And of course with the end of the year, comes end of the year lists. Huzzah! So let’s get to it then, shall we?
For the record, only games that I have completed were eligible for this list, which means there are some pretty huge exclusions. I’ll be putting those into a separate list of best games I’ve yet to finish.
Here are the top 10 games we played in 2016.
10:
Overwatch
It’s been a long time since I’ve fallen in love with a multiplayer-only FPS, but Overwatch scratches an itch that I forgot I had. Blizzard’s team-based shooter is just the right combination of cool characters, cool abilities, and accessibility. As much as I respect Blizzard’s set of games and properties, I’ve never been too hot on the art styles used.
Overwatch on the other hand has a great cast of characters with unique looks and backgrounds, all of which are right up my alley. Factor in fun moment to moment gameplay, and while I may not be great at the game, I have a blast joining random matches and blowing people to hell with D.Va.
I picture myself sticking with this one for a long time.

Project Diva: Future Tone
On a sheer content level, Project Diva: Future Tone crushes its competition. Packed with hundreds of songs and music videos spanning Hatsune Miku’s existence, Future Tone gives you more rhythm game for your buck than any other Japanese title in the genre. It’s absurd.
While not every music video is a winner (many of them are very basic, with minimal animation), there’s still lots to enjoy here. Whether you’re a Project Diva veteran or a newcomer, Future Tone will keep you entertained for hours on end. Much to my own surprise, Sega is releasing this baby early next year. Definitely pick it up.

Titanfall 2
I enjoyed the original Titanfall’s multiplayer mode, but like many others, I lamented the lack of a strong single player mode.
Fortunately for me, Titanfall 2 not only fixes that problem, it also happens to have the best FPS single player campaign of the year (Doom was also great, but alas, I’ve yet to finish it). Wide open areas with lots of things to discover, complex level design, interesting gimmicks, and a simple but exciting narrative win the day here.
Oh, and the multiplayer is excellent too. Big shocker there.

Ace Attorney 6
I’m going to be completely honest with you all: I adore everything about Ace Attorney. I think Ace Attorney 4 is a great game, I thought 5 as an excellent entry in the series as well, and I’ve enjoyed every single spinoff.
I don’t think Ace Attorney 6 is some crazy return to form, because I personally don’t think Ace Attorney has strayed from the path. That being said, Ace Attorney 6 does some really fascinating things with the formula, and the return of several beloved characters makes it something of a celebration of Ace Attorney. Seeing Apollo’s story (his trilogy, so to speak) come to ahead here was immensely satisfying, and I can’t wait for the new numbered game.
But first, Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2!

Dark Souls 3
I liked Demon Souls and the original Dark Souls a whole bunch. Dark Souls 2 didn’t do much for me, but I did put crazy amounts of time into Bloodborne. For me, Dark Souls 3 is probably my favorite of the bunch. It’s not quite the big circular world that the first game is, but the sense of progression and being on a journey makes up for that in my opinion. Awesome locales, great boss fights, and lots of secrets made for a jolly good time.
I still gotta get around to the DLC at some point.

Final Fantasy XV
After everything Final Fantasy XV (the game formerly known as Versus XIII) has been through, it should have been complete and utter garbage. Instead, we got a fun open world game with a whole lot of jank and weird story problems that speak to its troubled development history. I’d say that’s a victory.
For all its story issues (fascinating world and great villain aside), Final Fantasy XV gets its core four main characters extremely right, and sticks the landing so well that I’m more than willing to shrug at the story issues. I cared less about that bigger narrative than I did seeing how these four friends would somehow make it through the game in one piece, and I’m fine with that. Tabata and his team did the impossible as far as I’m concerned.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
Shin Megami Tensei IV was my game of the year a few years back, so it should come as no surprise that the excellent sequel ends up high on my list in 2016. I think it’s the better game overall on almost every level, and I still find that the SMT team at Atlus did a helluva job making such a huge game on the tiny handheld that is the 3DS.
I know some people weren’t terrible fond of the main party here, but I found it a nice change of pace to have even a little bit of levity in what is otherwise an oppressively dark video game.
I’m honestly not sure what else to say here. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse is a fantastic video game and more than deserves its high ranking on this list.
3:
Tales of Berseria
This is as much of a surprise to me as it is to all of you, I’m sure. Never in a million years did I expect to put a modern 3D Tales game so high up on my list. Don’t misunderstand what this means. Berseria isn’t at spot number 4 because the games this year weren’t that great. In fact, this year has been an excellent one for Japanese titles. Tales of Berseria was just that good.
In terms of dungeon design, Tales of Berseria makes most of the same kinds of mistakes as the previous modern games do. The open fields are still generally open and empty (though perhaps a bit better about visual variety). Where Berseria really delivers is in its fast and fun combat, and much to my own surprise, its cast of characters and story.
The game treats your party like a group of Tales of villains, and to be perfectly honest, that’s not all that far from reality. Although we see why Velvet becomes who she becomes, the vengeful protagonist is cruel and cares little for human life. A lot of people die in Berseria, and many of them are killed by the party you play as. That said, the game doesn’t go for shock value, and by the end of this sad but somehow uplifting tale, I’d be shocked if you didn’t feel SOMETHING.
Tales of Berseria is probably my favorite 3D Tales game by a long shot, and that’s worth something.
2:
Utawarerumono: Futari no Hakuoro
Two years in a row, Aquaplus grabs the number two spot.
Who would have thought that a decade+ year old franchise brought back from the dead could lead to not just one, but two excellent, moving sequels that bring everything together in satisfying capacity. Aquaplus has never really been on my radar, but with their [now] Utawarerumono trilogy, I’m fully on board.
It’s hard to describe why Futari no Hakuoro is so good. Sure, the strategy combat is much improved, but that was never the main draw for this series to begin with. It was the characters, the story, and everything related to the two. In that sense, Futari no Hakuoro spins one of the best yarns of the year (number 2 perhaps?). Hopefully one of these days this series will get the English localization it desperately deserves.

Persona 5
Of course. Of fucking course. If you’ve been keeping track of what I’ve been up to this year, this should come as the most obvious top spot there could possibly be.
After almost a decade of waiting for the next numbered sequel in Atlus’ still-growing-hit-franchise, Persona 5 had a whole lot of insane expectations layered onto it. Nonstop Persona 3 and 4 spin-offs had cultivated the brand for years, but Atlus would have to do something special if they wanted Persona 5 to be the modern classic many hoped it would be.
I spent over 120 hours with the cool badasses that made up my group of Crazy Taxi (yeah, I’m good at names) Phantom Troupe, and even as the credits were rolling, I found myself wishing I could go another 100 just so I could keep hanging with them. On top of a great, lovable cast of flawed individuals, Persona 5 is more grounded in real world issues than perhaps any entry before it, tackling themes of racism, sexual harassment, the broken Japanese school system, politics, and various other Japanese social issues. It speaks directly to Japanese people in a way that I think really has the potential to resonate.
On the gameplay end, things have gotten a huge overhaul. Actual designed dungeons mean that the actually moment to moment gameplay is as exciting as the fast paced combat. More involved social links make learning about your favorite secondary characters feel like personal investments. Quality of life changes to the menu and ultra stylish UI make things easy to find and access. Layer on top of that one of the most visually stunning art styles I’ve ever seen in a modern video game, and you have yourself a modern classic.
Persona 5 is an incredibly important game for a lot of reasons, and I think people will be talking about it for years to come.
I could go on for years about how wonderful Persona 5 is, but you won’t have to wait too long to experience it for yourself in 2017.

Years from now, I think we’re all going to look back on the initial reveal of King of Fighters XIV and laugh about how despair-filled we all were. I clearly remember my own reactions upon seeing a trailer that, for all intents and purposes, felt sort of like a punch to the gut. Fighting game fans all wanted a new KoF (and if you didn’t, you’re dead to me), but not like this. Not with these low budget 3D graphics. For me personally, my immediate gut reaction was, “Oh, no. Not another Maximum Impact.”
But as King of Fighters XIV’s retail release got closer and closer, and more details and video of the game got released, it started to become clear that while it certainly wasn’t going to be an amazing looker, it would absolutely be a proper KoF game.
After having spent two weeks with the game, I’m happy to report that King of Fighters XIV is every bit as deserving of its numbered status as any other entry in the series, even if it’s not quite everything it could be.
Let me get this out of the way immediately. I’ve been playing King of Fighters games since the last 90′s, but I’m not particularly good at the franchise. I’ve always been better with anime games, so don’t take my thoughts here as the final word about how XIV plays. I can only provide my own perspective here, and if that’s not useful, I encourage you to look into write-ups by the KoF hardcore.
King of Fighters XIV hosts the usual set of fighting game modes, including Story, Online, Versus, Mission, Training, and Tutorial. On top of that you have a gallery for unlockable art and goodies, and the game itself keeps track of your player data as any good fighter should. Training mode provides the options you’ve come to expect from the genre, but doesn’t do anything particularly special. Tutorial mode is also relatively basic, walking you through how KoF inputs work. It would have been nice to have individual character tutorials, but alas. Mission mode is divided into three separate chunks: Trial, Time Attack, and Survival. The first is what you’d expect, providing a series of increasingly difficult combos for every character. Time Attack has you racing against the clock to defeat ten opponents, and Survival mode is about staying alive as long as possible.
The Story mode is pretty much King of Fighters XIV’s arcade mode, featuring a handful of cutscenes, some character dialogue, and then a final boss. It’s effectively what you’ve come to expect from SNK story presentation, so if you’re here because you want something closer to Mortal Kombat X or Guilty Gear Xrd, I’d recommend tempering those expectations. Still, it’s nice to have nonetheless.
I was only able to get in a few online matches during the embargo period, but what I played felt better than XIII in the very least. I wish I could comment more on this, but fortunately there are lots of other folks with more detailed write-ups of the netcode, so I advise you to search for those. In terms of features, you can obviously save replays, but additionally, you can create lobbies for up to 12 people, and even select from a series of rotation options like Tourney, Elim, and Series. These each have their own rule set for players cycle in and out of battle, which is pretty cool.
As for how the game actually plays, it initially feels slightly slower than prior King of Fighter games. This isn’t actually the case however. The 3D models feel like they have a different weight to them, but in terms of actual frames, KoF faithful should be able to pull off old favorites with little to no difficulty. XIV is still a four button fighter, and the old Maximum Gauge is around, functioning as your super meter. This bar is used for Max Mode, charged three-stock Climax Super Special moves, and your ordinary Super Specials. Dodging and guard crush are still in, rounding out your move set in predictable King of Fighters fashion. It feels good, it feels familiar, and it plays exactly like you’d expect it to. Fear not: King of Fighters XIV is no Maximum Impact. Where things start to differ, and where XIV is more newbie friendly than prior entries in the series, is in the new Rush combo system.
At its core, this functions exactly the same as the simple combo system that was in the Persona Arena games. By tapping the light punch button repeatedly (upon connecting), your character will automatically move into a combo that will finish with a Super Special provided the bar is there for it. What this effectively means is that folks who can’t play KoF particularly well or were scared by the various systems can just jump in and have a useful tool right off the bat. That being said, a solid normal combo will almost always be the better choice if you know your inputs, so it’s not as though this undercuts high level play.
King of Fighters XIV may not have the looks of Guilty Gear Xrd or Street Fighter V, but it has come a long way since its initial reveal. Animation is generally solid across the board, and most characters have some nice detailing on them. Some of the faces still bug me (oh, Kyo), but for the most part, XIV looks fine. For a studio starting from scratch, some fifty characters is nothing to laugh at.
It’s no secret that SNK was knee deep in the pachinko business, but with things drying up in that area, I was personally terrified to see one of my favorite old game developers sink into the ocean. The fact that they’re still alive and committed to becoming an important name in the games arena again means a lot. If King of Fighters XIV is their declaration of intent, I’m 100% on board. It may not be the prettiest fighting game alive, and it may still have some minor issues here and there, but it’s a blast to play. The only way from here is up.
On June 4, 2015, Natsuiro High School: Seishun Hakusho (known in Japanese as 夏色ハイスクル★青春白書〜転校初日のオレが幼馴染と再会したら報道部員にされていて激写少年の日々はスクープ大連発でイガイとモテモテなのに何故かマイメモリーはパンツ写真ばっかりという現実と向き合いながら考えるひと夏の島の学園生活と赤裸々な恋の行方) released for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 consoles in Japan. A year and six days later, on June 10, 2016, I cleared the game on a live stream. I streamed out every single minute of game time, because the game had been purchased using Patreon money with the promise of completion. I held up my end of the bargain.
Natsuiro High School is the worst game I have ever purchased and played to completion, bar none. So then the question becomes, why would I ever put myself through playing an awful game, instead of devoting that time to something fun? That’s actually an easier question to answer than it might seem.
And no, I’m not a masochist. Probably.
For those of you that missed my coverage of Natsuiro High School back in the day, let me sum it up for you as simply as I can. It’s an “open world” game released by D3 Publisher. It was billed as an adventure game of sorts in which you played a transfer student with some photography skills. The main draw here was that you could sneak around the island, using stealth to capture pervy photos of girls. Each one of them would have their own unique undergarments, though if you took your time with the photo, the police would be called on you. On top of that, you had a gallery of female characters who you could end up with, not unlike a dating sim.
That’s all well and good, except everything about the game is broken. Basic quality of life elements are entirely absent. A minimap? No. A quest marker? No. All the quests activate and deactivate based on an in-game clock, except the only way to get an exact time is to go into a classroom that happens have a clock on the wall. The game is glitchy, has a total of three musical tracks, is barely animated, and has writing that would make your standard harem anime look like Genji Monogatari. That’s ignoring the oddly racist undertones, the sexist undertones, the weird nationalism on display every now and then, etc. The entire game’s narrative conflict is introduced and immediately resolved in a minute long cutscene, 40 hours into the game. The fan service elements D3 used to draw in that crowd are barely present. Natsuiro High School barely has anything that qualifies as proper gameplay, because there is no real objective to begin with. As I remarked on stream, it’s nothing.
Yet despite the fact that I spent the better part of a year slowly making my way through Natsuiro High School, I don’t regret playing it.
Every person that consumes media has their own set of standards. What qualifies as amazing? What qualifies as garbage? Depending on the person, these things wildly differ. That’s obvious, but sometimes I think that in our rush to classify everything we experience, we can lose sight of quality. Our expectations for what something worth buying or playing can occasionally go bonkers, and for that very reason, I stuck with Natsuiro High School. As a barely functioning terrible game, it serves as a standard with which other experiences can be judged.
I like to describe it as something of a palette cleanser. It’s important to remind yourself of how bad an experience can truly be, especially in a retail title. From a critical perspective it also helps you pinpoint specific qualities in a game that went underappreciated because it was always there in all the titles you played. Why doesn’t this work? Why isn’t this fun? What can be done to fix this, if anything? Truly terrible experiences eventually get you to ask these questions to yourself, because thinking about the game you’re playing might end up driving you mad. Ask my Twitch viewers. They’ve seen it happen in real time.
This is applicable to any media, especially in the case of TV, where entire strings of episodes might be iffy. I can understand that the idea of wasting your time watching 24 episodes of, let’s say, a bad anime TV series doesn’t seem like the best use of your time, but it does serve as a good palette cleanser. A few months back, I subjected myself to watching the show Heavy Object out of morbid curiosity. It was really bad. On almost every technical level and narrative level, it just fails. Big Order is another similar series. Shows like these help me to reset my own personal set of standards.
These standards are never going to be the same from person to person, but I don’t think it hurts to take a moment every now and then to take another look at what qualifies as garbage to you.
