Commodore 64G, the White C=64

The C=64G is more than just a “white C64” — it’s one of the last commercially sold versions of the Commodore 64, and a very interesting late-era hybrid. It kept the classic breadbox-style case, but in a much lighter color similar to the C64C, reflecting late-1980s design trends.

What makes it especially interesting from a hardware perspective is that many C64G units used a smaller, simplified motherboard design (similar to late C64 variants), although some machines reportedly still shipped with older-style C64 boards. This mix-and-match nature also showed up in keyboards and internal parts, suggesting Commodore was using whatever stock was available at the end of the C64 production era.

The C64G is also commonly associated with the MOS 8580 SID chip, which changes the behavior of sampled sound compared to older 6581-based machines (notably much lower playback volume unless modified).

So from a collector and hardware enthusiast point of view, the C=64G is a great example of Commodore’s late production strategy: a classic exterior, newer internal revisions, and a lot of variation between individual units.
