Everybody finds the good lighting once in awhile.
Many of you know that Tom and I almost lost our beloved pug Pep Pep early last week.
We just needed to take some time and really thank everyone who helped our little family, because there were truly a lot of you!
Just to quickly explain what happened: Apparently Pep ate something he shouldn’t have (doctors think a peach pit), and we never caught him, he didn’t choke on it, and we don’t even know when he ate it. We brought him to the emergency veterenary hospital on Sunday (3/31) night. He was initially discharged, then we brought him back a couple hours later, when he was admitted. Overnight Sunday in to Monday, his condition deteriorated rapidly, necessitating emergency surgery to remove the foreign object lodged in his intestines. We were told he would probably not even survive the surgery, but the doctors wanted to give it their all in order to try and save him.
Well, save him, they certainly did. We have to thank everyone at the emergency hospital, VSEC Philadelphia, but very special thanks go to Dr. Torre and Dr. Ben-Amotz. Dr. Torre was the one who noticed Pep’s rapid decline, and with her quick thinking and concern, decided that he needed surgery above all else. Dr. Ben-Amotz was the surgeon who removed th blockage from Pep’s intestines. They very much saved our dog’s life. We will thank everyone at VSEC that we can, but we are indebted to the expedient and precise work from those two doctors first and foremost. We would also like to thank Dr. Babcock, Dr. Tseng, Dr. Java, Dr. Cáceres, and all of the nurses and staff. Just about everyone there was able to help out and answer our questions, and we just can’t say enough about the level of care Pep was given at VSEC.
We also need to thank so many of our friends and family, who’s well wishes, positive vibes, and constant concern was something that kept us going and made us realize how special this pug truly is.
Obvously we can’t continue the list of thank you’s without mentioning our amazing friends Chet and Kelly Farley for taking it upon themselves to set up a donation page for the enormous invoice we received. They knew from past experience with their awesome dogs that this would likely cost a lot. It is one of the nicest things anyone has done for us, and we are so very grateful for it.
With the creation of the website (bit.ly/help4pep), we also have to thank everyone who donated and helped spread the word. Upon realizing the site was set up, we were flooded with emotions because the notion of the site itself was so wonderful, but so many people contributed and we can’t thank them enough. Donors range from family, friends, co-workers, Twitter followers, and followers-of-Twitter-followers (meaning, people we don’t even know!), some of whom made very large donations, which Tom and I really couldn’t believe. We also want to thank everyone who shared the information on social media. Some of you really championed the cause, and even though we know that many weren’t in a place to be able to donate, you helped so much just by spreading the word.
Your generosity is still something we marvel about. We knew that this incident would break the bank, but we decided we would rather have our dog with us than anything else. So while shocked, the blow was softened in knowing that he would survive afterall. The donations were something we never even imagined, and you have no idea how much all of them helped, so thank you all so much!
Pep Pep is recovering at home, and while recently insured, he still needs to be watched like a hawk. He's still trying to eat "street food," something we know all about, but we can't leave him unattended outdoors. His apetite is back to normal (voracious), he’s keeping food down, his potty breaks are back to a normal schedule, he’s going #2 (WOOHOO!), he’s on pain meds for a few more days, and we have to continue keeping him “quiet and still” for another week (a Herculean task, but we’re considering his ever increasing energy levels a leap forward in the recovery process). So far, so good, thank god, because we would truly be lost without Pep Pep in our lives, and I’m sure some of you would commiserate.
Well, once again, we thank you so much for your help. You honestly got us through this really tough situation, went above and beyond in order to do it, and we are ever so grateful!
Love, Jess, Tom, and most of all, Pep Pep!
It’s official, this house has had pink silly string on its windows for over 2 months now.
