I do feel really guilty because my friend’s behaviors are essentially harmless. I’m not good or correct for getting annoyed at them as much as I do. I’m not a good friend to them. I consistently forget that I can only tolerate them in small doses or in my other friend group, where their behaviors that irk me don’t take up as much space, or at least aren’t reinforced in the same way. I just really cannot handle their particular brand of self-obsession, which I know is mostly driven by a combination of untreated mental illness and neurodivergence. It’s not fair to get mad at them, even though they constantly draw attention to it, even though I have consistently tried to encourage them to seek treatment. Gay men. Uggggh.
(Putting something mean under the cut)
It’s frustrating because we constantly end up in situations where people are disrespectful to them or shut them down because of their…. consistent inability to read a room and I just makes me feel awful but I don’t know what to do about it. I try to communicate with them as honestly as possible which I know only makes me come across as a Mega Horrible Bitch. But you just can’t be saying shit like that, white gay man. You can’t.

I am a person who has normal reactions to sensory information. I am a person who can exist around other human beings without wanting to crawl out of my skin. Hearing people who are not as smart as they think they are talking about things I care about does not hurt me.
Andrei doesn’t use AI but he also doesn’t have any strong moral objections, he just thinks it’s stupid and thinks that people who care about it a lot are stupid because Andrei thinks caring about things in general is very naive.
Proving Andrei’s point, Nikolai and Anatole are very interested and into AI. ChatGPT is their best friend. Actually Anatole would probably be into Grok or Claude but I don’t know enough about what’s out there to make a complete judgement, I just know he would be in too deep to be using the mainstream normie chatbot.
Dolokov using AI to run scams. What scam? All of them.
Ippolit has invested a lot of money into the AI bubble. Vasily pretends to think the whole thing is stupid but is secretly quite invested. Prince Bolkonsky hates AI with a burning passion because he also hates technology.
Natasha consistently falls for AI generated photos and videos online, especially ones with cute animals. I also feel like she got somewhat invested in fruit Love Island but will never share that with anyone because she is too embarrassed. Sonya thinks the way the Rostovs talk about AI is ridiculous but has to keep her mouth shut because they’re all very invested and she’s insecure.
Marya is maybe the only one with the actual typical moral objections of generative AI. This is because she is the only person the book with a soul. Though I think Helene would recognize all the ethical issues and just…. Not care.
in a modern au Pierre is at Anna Pavlovna’s salon talking about the ways AI is going to revolutionize the world until Andrei comes to bail him out. then he goes home and asks ChatGPT a bunch of existential questions like “Am I a Good Person?” and the model’s sycophancy annoys him so much that the next time we see him he’s either a Zizian or an eco-terrorist
Pierre Bezukhov was the first person to have AI psychosis. And he did this without being in contact with any actual AI and also while being a fictional character

I don’t think you need to read War & Peace to follow Great Comet but reading it after adds a delightful amount of context to certain character dynamics and lines. For example, when Hélène says “Your fiancé would want you to have fun / Rather than be bored to death”, you’re like “No! Natasha, she’s manipulating you! Andrey wouldn’t want you to ‘have fun’ if it means cheating on him!” But with the additional context of the book you realize that Andrey would also not want her to have fun, because he hates fun.

nothing to smile about in my life
very strange being part of a fan of a "classic" thing bc like. its overrated. its underrated. everyone knows OF it but its a toss up if theyve actually ever engaged with it. you want to talk to everyone about how good it is but its so culturally ingrained that everyone waves off your glowing review as "well duh, its [classic thing]". its dismissed and overlooked BECAUSE it is so good. you cant find anyone to talk to about it except for deranged ppl on tumblr bc the masses havent actively thought about it in 30 years. its been referenced in every form of media since it released. no one gives it a second thought. youre going crazy.
Shit man, this soldier war is fucked. I just saw a guy kill another guy, with a gun. I gotta get the fuck outta here.
