'I love the Seven Up series… for all the wrong reasons’

TV doesn’t get any funnier than Fawlty Towers. I discovered it as a teenager in the 1990s and, if anything, it makes me laugh louder and longer when I see it now. All reality shows become formulaic after a couple of series.

When Wife Swap came out in 2003, I thought the idea of families from different backgrounds exchanging places was extremely clever. Then it went the way of all the others and I lost interest.

I love the Seven Up series for the wrong reasons. I’ve always got the impression that the people taking part are doing so with some reluctance. It feels as if I’m watching people who are suffering. I suspect most of us would find it painful to have any poignant stage of our life documented in such a way. I find that element of it very distressing. At the same time I find it moving to watch that group of people continue to evolve as human beings. It shows up the gap between the goals we set and how our lives turn out.

I know how it feels to be chased by giant sperm. It was 2005, and my first paid acting job involved me being chased down the road by a gang of giant sperm for a condom ad.

How would I describe my acting style in five words? Remaining calm when chaos reigns.
