when u meet a poc and they introduce themselves w/the white pronounciation of their name like no sweetie youāre safe here, roll the r
Like you might have to pronounce your names 6 times to me slowly like Iām a fucking idiot but Iād rather look stupid and learn your real name than have you give me your shortened version or nickname to make your name more āconvenientā for me to say out loud
except like literally no, donāt say this to a poc who tells you the anglicized pronunciation of their name
iāve seen a lot of poc calling out this post already but not many people have given longer responses so i will try to do that
1) my name is what i say my name is. when asked how to pronounce my name, sometimes i just say the anglicized pronunciation and sometimes i tell peopleĀ āthe anglicized pronunciation that i prefer is _____.ā i literally never introduce myself with the vietnamese pronunciation of my name.
2) for the well-meaning ally, it might seem disrespectful to use an anglicized pronunciation. please consider that it is also disrespectful to use or ask that i tell you a pronunciation other than the one iāve already given. to ask for or use another pronunciation is toĀ defy what i am telling you. thatās rude and disrespectful.
3) to do so also shows how entitled you as a white person are. you are not entitled to my name, my language, or my culture. you can have access to those things if i invite you in.
4)Ā āno sweetie youāre safe hereā āiād rather look stupid and learn your real name than have you give me your shortened version ⦠to make your name more āconvenientā for me to sayā you might be a good person and a good ally, but iām inclined to think that youāre not. donāt assume that my decision to introduce myself with an anglicized pronunciation is for YOUR benefit. i would NOT introduce myself by a mispronunciation because iām worried that my real name would be inconvenient for you. it is MY preference for you to use this anglicized pronunciation. please think about why you think that poc are doing these things for your benefit. please think about why you potentially consider poc to be so subservient as to mispronounce our own names SOLELY for YOUR convenience. it has nothing to do with you.
4.5) re: being a good ally to poc. we canāt tell the difference between a white person and a White Person TM, but in my personal experience most are a White Person TM.
5) try to think about this.Ā āwhere are you from? no, where are you REALLY from? like, where is your FAMILY from?ā vs.Ā āhow do you say your name? no, how do you REALLY say your name?ā etc. itās the same damn thing. youāre not entitled to anything other than what i say to you. if i tell you iām from canada then you accept that as the answer. if i tell you my name is an anglicized pronunciation then you accept that as the answer.
i know a lot of white people reblogged the original post uncritically and i recognize that you are all trying and that you really are well-meaning in this sentiment. but please consider. if i wanted you to pronounce my nameĀ āproperly,ā i would have told you the āproperā pronunciation in the first place.

If you didnāt get the hint, I really, really hate MCU. I donāt want to rain on anyoneās parade, but what Marvel has done is way too personal for me to be quiet. The one thing I will force upon you with all my heart, is my pure hatred of the Doctor Strange movie. Iām begging you,Ā please boycott Doctor Strange.
What Marvel is doing with this film is inexcusable.Ā Iām Tibetan, and I grew up in America as a child of refugees. My father was a fan of Marvel comics as a child, and one of his favorite stories was Doctor Strangeās, because of his connection to our homeland, Tibet. The Ancient One was a high Tibetan lama who taught Doctor Strange the art of magic. You might think Marvelās only crime is whitewashing him, but its a lot worse then that. tl;drĀ Marvel blatantly turned the Ancient One into a white woman, as well as changed Doctor Strangeās original setting of Tibet to Nepal, in order to avoid any involvement with Tibetās current politics (aka oppression) with Communist China.Ā
The reason my parents are refugees is because of the Chinese genocide of Tibetans. Tibet is a country occupied by China, and is one of the most oppressed countries in the world. You probably donāt know much about it because Chinaās position as a global superpower as well as the governmentās complete control of media and news. There is no freedom of speech in all of China, therefore national censorship is extremely common and no one who isnāt involved really knows anything. China pretends that all Tibetans are happyĀ and they really do not like anyone even mentioning the Tibet situation, especially outsiders.Ā
Marvel knows this, one of their main markets is their viewers in China. China has banned a lot of foreign films for long periods of time because of even slight implications of Tibetan oppression (ex: the Avatar the Last Airbender movie). Doctor Strange could get banned if they included Tibet, meaning millions lost. Why bother risking loosing money from China when you can just whitewash everything to cover it up? This is Marvelās direct statement that they care more about money then human rights, and Iām honestly not surprised. This has always happened, and it will happen again. Literally no one gives a fuck about Tibetans, Iāve seen it happen all my life. Westerners and the Chinese government alike want to hide our oppression, hide our culture until it makes them money, and hide our millions of deaths and losses. If you do happen to be one of the few who do care, please, please, do not support this film and boycott Doctor Strange.Ā

Keshaās legal tale has been rocked by a problematic twist this week. Find out how and why belowā¦
The entertainerās case against her former mentor Dr. Luke was met by a number of shocking blows after her request to be freed from him was denied in court.
This week, a number of the caseās observers have raised concerns about this outcome.
Its judge, New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich, is married to the lawyer Ed Kornreich whose law firm, Proskauer Rose, works for Sony Music.
Back in April 2016, Kornreich dismissed the singerās case against Luke.
This, coupled with an FBI investigation which took place in 2004, has given Keshaās supporters reason to believe that [Kornreichās] motives for doing so may stem from her personal ties to the labelās legal arm.
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST
wow this is ridiculous
Holy shit?
oh my fucking god

Iām tired
Iām gay. Iām tired.
I texted one of my best friends this morning and asked, āDid you hear about Orlando?ā because the first time I ever went to a gay club and pretended like I was āoutā was with him when we were fresh out of high school. Out of all my friends, heās probably spent the most time in gay clubs. Which means Iām more worried about him than about my other friends. So I texted him.
Iām tired.
They want people to give blood, but itās gay people who need the blood and itās gay people who canāt donate. But weāre in crisis mode! Weāll take your tainted gay blood for today only!
Iām tired.
I held hands with a man last week and thought, āOh no, weāre in a small town in Utah and this is dangerous because weāre both gay,ā before I remembered that heās a guy and Iām a girl so no, itās not dangerous. But the next time I hold hands with a girl, will someone see us and get mad enough to shoot 50 gay people? Will I feel responsible when I read the news? Will I feel like a danger to society for being gay?
Iām tired.
I went to Pride in Salt Lake City last weekend and I complained as I stood in line in the hot sun and I complained about the ticket prices and I complained about the festival being smaller than it was last year and I complained. When it was over, I was still alive. Iām still alive. I canāt believe I complained.
Iām tired.
Bury your gays. Currently on television, 4 percent of characters identify as LGBT. In 2016, about 40 percent of that 4 percent have already died. Yesterday, that mightāve been the issue I wanted to discuss. Yesterday, I mightāve been angry about fictional gays dying. Yesterday. Art imitates life, life imitates art, and I am tired.
Iām tired.
A year ago I put a rainbow flag around my shoulders and celebrated the legalization of gay marriage in the United States. A year ago there was no law banning transgender people from using the bathroom of their choosing. A year ago a man hadnāt shot 50 gay people dead because he saw two men kissing and got angry. āNow that gay marriage is legal, what more do you people want?ā Well, I want to stay alive, for one thing.
Iām tired.
There arenāt gay coffee shops or gay restaurants ā there are gay nightclubs. Gay nightclubs where LGBT people can meet other LGBT people and feel safe. I want to meet other LGBT people and make friends with LGBT people, but I also donāt want to die.
Iām tired.
My existence is controversial. Even though Iām out, I have to be careful about how āgayā I āact.ā What happens if Iām at work and offend a customer? What happens if someone I know reads these words and decides to punish me for them? What happens if someone gets so angry about my sexuality that they shoot 50 people?
Iām gay. Iām tired.
