Right now, Brazil is quite literally stopping
There’s a truck drivers strick going on in Brazil, mostly due to the high prices of diesel and gas. It started on monday (May 21) and they have been blocking roads since then. The blockades stop all provision loads from passing, but they let cars and buses pass (that is, the ones who still have gas to go). They have the support of the population (even some people giving them food so they can stay longer), because things are going really really bad.
Because of the strike, most cities are completely out of gas right now. Public transportation is being reduced to half or less. Lots of places are running out of some sorts of food, like potatoes, eggs and so on. Food prices are getting higher and higher. Farmers and industries had huge losses of products such as meat and milk, because there’s no way to transport them.
Classes are getting cancelled all around. Some cities will be facing water shortages soon because there are not enough chemicals to treat water for long. Some places are already lacking medicine. Garbage trucks, ambulances and police cars are stopping because there’s no gas. Airports are cancelling flights because there’s no fuel for the planes. This entire country is stopping. And I really mean the whole country, because we’re highly dependent on roads and gas, our economy and transportation system is almost totally based on that.
Meanwhile, the so-called president does nearly nothing. He talks a lot but does too little and the deals he proposes aren’t real changes. I’m not fully informed, but it seems he has discussed things with the owners of transportation enterprisers, intead of meeting the demands of the actual truck drivers. Today, he said he will send the army to stop the truck drivers from blocking the roads. Except that the army isn’t sure if they have gas to go do that (yes, that’s Brazil right now).
The people are still supportive of the movement, but we’re also afraid of where this is going. The threat of a new dictatorship feels more real each day, and nothing terrifies me as much as that. We’re also afraid enterprises or some powerful people will use the movement to reach their own goals (but here I’m just fearfully guessing, there’s a lot of news and opinions and it’s hard to know how this will go). Still, we are so tired and our economy and politics are not going well at all for a while now, the country is so devided for the last few years and it seems like nobody is happy with how things are. This entire crisis goes much deeper and has been getting worse and worse for years now. Pay attention to Brazil. This is huge and very very important.
