Commemoration of the 2014 Ayotzinapa Mass Kidnapping

Tomorrow, September 23rd 2016, from 12-2pm, in the VCU Student Commons Plaza (900 Floyd Avenue, Richmond VA), Political Latinxs United for Movement and Action in Society (Plumas at VCU) will be holding an observation to remember the 43 victims of the 2014 mass kidnapping in Ayotzinapa, Mexico.

A brief summary: on September 26th 2014, a large group of students of the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College were traveling to Mexico City for a protest. They were attacked by local police, apparently on the orders of Iguala mayor José Luis Abarca Velázquez. The police killed 6 and injured 25 (students and bystanders), then took 43 students into custody. It’s unclear whether the police acted alone, or in collusion with Federal forces or the army. The police turned the students over to a local crime syndicate, which is believed to have murdered them and destroyed their remains. Their bodies have not been recovered.
