Evaluation for Drama - Vengeance

I wrote the screenplay for this short film. I also produced it and starred in it as well.

We all were well organized with our pre production, especially Brogan (Surprisingly)

I came up with the modurity of the ideas, since I had wrote it.

The music to my edit I loved, even if others didn’t. I liked the beat it went in and plus it has some sentimental value to me so I knew some point this year I had to use it and since it was my last project in the year, it was my chance. 

The begining sequence of me in the tower stalking my victim I would of changed, only slightly. I thought it didn’t truly make sense as I was looking away from where the camera was facing. Personal error as I was too fixated on the nearby motor way. Apart from that, I liked it. I would of also liked more close ups of my body, i.e: bottom of my face, or hands etc.

The flashback sequence was a no brainer. I would of changed a lot. Personally the actor which played the friend who dies. I didn’t like how he portrayed the friend one bit. He was to generic and not much of a target. The shot on the tripod was extremely soft and focused onto the background more than me and the other actor.

I would’ve liked to add more cuts for the flashback sequence but we didn’t have alot of time. The sound effects for walking and stabbing was also quite generic, I had to search youtube and unfortunately that was apparently the best sounds they had. 

After the flashback, I am seen in the tower again, leaving. I feel the elevator scene was too boring. The bit where I walk out, the doors took too long to open and it made no sense how I got out of the building and straight towards Jack (the victim) I then added a slight edit, to play a long with the tune. Me disapearing and reapearing, personally looking quite cool.

The fight scene made me laugh to the point in crying. Mine and Jacks acting was appaulng, to the point the kicks Jack dealt me we’re light taps. The only thing which was real was him elbowing me in the throat. personally “ouch”. 

Other than that I feel like it was okay. 

I would’ve changed a lot thinking about it now. For example, more cuts and perhaps realistic wounds. The lighting could be one as well. I personally still like the music even though some disagree, but hey we all have our own opinions. I wouldve also changed actors as we were all just terrible. I mean come on. we sucked.

Camera shots I would change to a more close up feel and mystery...

I feel this did not meet cinema standards, neither did it meet TV standards. As we used a canon camera, and canon cameras aren’t exactly acceptable for cinema or TV standard. Black magic would of made the short film 10X more better, but unfortunately we knew nothing about how to use them unlike some of the other groups.

Other than all of what I just said. It was pretty good. I enjoyed filming it and editing it.

Evaluation for ALL Andrea Edits

As I have checked Andreas tumblr page and found no source of what to go on with this topic. I shall just do similar things like I have done with my previous evaluations.

WAR MONTAGE

War Montage was the first edit I got to do with Andrea. I was given a

load of pictures which presented war in it’s true nature and the effects it gives the human race. I was told to create a story with the pictures in the style of a montage. It was with my initiative to make a good story with the given pictures.

Before anything, I was told to open “Final Cut Pro 7″ which is a really good editing software. From there I was told to change the sequence settings so I would be able to edit without any dodgy problems with the files. 

After I managed to do the sequence settings, I imported the folder which was found in Documents, Final cut pro documents, War montage. In the folder, it had the pictures and audio that I needed to use. As soon as they were imported I renamed them to my liking so I wouldn’t get confused on what pictures to use.

Once I renamed all my pictures I then put the ones I chose to use, into the timeline, creating a

rough cut. Once I finished the rough cut, I then applied music and sound effects to give a sense of realism in the photos. I added specific sound effects and music to my piece as I wanted to give a certain sense of emotion. I wanted to portray sadness, anger and guilt at the same time. The story I was going for was old veterans that re-thought their past in the army and how truly cruel it was. It is always important to do a story otherwise it will make no sense and isn’t appeasing. Also, when I added the music, I adjusted the pictures so they would change to a different picture at the beat from the music. 

Once all of the editing was finished, I needed to export it so I could put it on youtube. I simply went to “file” and scrolled down to export” then sideways to “quicktime movie”. As the screen appeared, it told me to give the piece a title. I called it War Montage - Donovan Marsden, just so I didn’t confuse myself when putting it up on youtube and trying

to find the file amongst other pieces of work. Once I exported it from Final Cut Pro, I simply made it an mp4 file so it was better quality for youtube. I went onto a application called Mpeg-Streamclip and added my work to it, from there I created it to an mp4, having to do more setting changes, similar to sequence settings. After I did that I saved it again and it converted itself. Afterwards I uploaded it to youtube.

SALT LAKE CITY TRAILER

For the second edit with Andrea, I was told to create a 30 second trailer about a woman who is partaking in a desert drag race.

 I began my edit, by creating a new Final Cut Pro Project, and changing the Sequence Settings. I then  imported the folder from the FCP Documents folder on the Macs. After that, I created a rough cut of how I wanted the trailer to look. I then added a relevant pace of music to increase the tension and excitement within the trailer.

During this edit, I did not know how to color correct video clips or photos. Since then I have learnt how to. To Color correct, what I need to do is to click on the Effects Drop-Down. Afterwards you need to click on the Effects Tab, you need to go on the Video Filters drop-down, then you click on the Color Correction Tab, you then need to go on the Color Corrector 3-way Tab.

  Afterwards, a screen appears, revealing 3 seperate color wheels to the left hand side, and the clip that has been selected on the right. Blacks, mids, whites are the names of the color wheels, changing their colors, changes the gradients of the clip or photo.

After creating the project, I exported it same way as I did in my last project.

MISKIN RADIO

For the third edit, I had to edit an interview for the Miskin Radio Course which is based in the college. First I started the edit the normal way that I have previously stated. I started up a new project and made sure that the sequence settings were correct for the video codec. I then imported the correct video folder which included the clips and audio that I needed to use. I then renamed the files to make sure that the files were easy to find, giving me more time to edit.

Afterwards. I had to sync the audio to the video, I did this by putting the full interview video in the timeline, then I deleted the video audio track that was put on the timeline. I then placed the audio track underneath the video track. Swapping the previous audio. After that I then matched the audio to the video, making sure the mouth movements were going alone with what the audio track which was playing.

 I should have kept the whole interview visual and audio throughout the whole timeline instead of cutting it and chopping it up, because I did run into some problems as I did change some things. which meant that I had to re-sync a lot  of the audio and visual which took up a lot of time trying to match the audio and visually perfectly, again.

Music, personally was extremely important to edit with, as it helps pace the interview. This is because I was trying to make it an upbeat pace, There was a pre made song in the folder I imported to final cut pro which I used. It had light acoustic at the beginning and displayed a bigger beat during the interview. I felt that this made the video fast paced and entertaining for people to watch. I also needed to make sure that the cutaways I was using were not shaking or overexposed. This meant that I had to delete some cutaways so I didn’t get too confused with them and the ones I was actually going to use.

Again, I exported it how I did for the rest of the projects.

CHEVROLET COMMERCIAL

The fourth edit I had to do was a re-edit of a 60’s Chevrolet Commercial. First I started the editing process the same way as I usually do, I created the correct codec, which was slightly different to the normal codec as the files and the aspect ratios were different. I then imported the folder which included the video and music files which I needed for the commercial. Afterwards, I then renamed them in order to make the editing easier on myself as I could quickly find the video files that I needed.

After renaming them, I reviewed the footage and I tried to create a story that made sense of the commercial. I then added in the music and tried to fit the story to match the music, this was the most difficult part because it took time to get the shots to be perfectly I time with the music.

In my story, I was trying to reveal the comparison of the familys car which was a danger hazard, and the Chevrolet which looked stunning. At first I showed the family walking up to the shop and admiring the car. Then I showed their car door opening on it’s own and a piece of fruit falling out and rolling. Then compared to the man who showed them the Chevrolet, opening the door nice and smooth and closing it perfectly.

I didn’t manage to finish it and in the near future when I had time I couldn’t find it. So my piece of work is now stuck in development hell. But if I had done it I would’ve exported it the same way as all my other projects.

BODY SHOP IMAGE

The fifth project with Andrea, I was told to create my own edit of the Body Image Documentary. For this edit I started the same as before. I created the codec, imported the folder with the clips and audio in and re-named the files, imported the background music and then I began my edit. After all of that process, I then needed to make sure that the video footage and the non camera audio matched up, making sure no audio was out of sync with the video. I made sure that I learnt from the mistakes I had made in the Miskin Radio Interview that I had done before. This mistake I made there was that I cut up the audio and video footage in order to add the cutaways instead of syncing the whole audio and video together and then adding the cutaways on top of them. This meant that the edit process was easier as I didn’t have to re-sync the audio and video every time.

This specific edit we needed to explain what body image meant to different people, we also needed to make the interview seem like they blend together, to do this we needed review the footage and write down on a piece of paper, key words and phrases that fitted into the theme of the documentary. This personally took hours as I couldn’t quite get the concept, but once I had found some interesting points to piece together. I then tried to edit the interviews and the audio from them into a smooth timeline. This meant that I needed to, hide the Jump Cuts and the change in voices, so there was a lot of pauses and there was a lot of cuts so that the Jump cuts were hidden.

After I had the rough cut done, I needed to add in the cutaways, this made the Documentary quicker and more entertaining to watch. I decided that the cutaways needed to fit in with the interviews and make sense to the story. I needed to make sure that the cutaways and the interviews were timed with the music, to keep a pace which keeps the audience enjoying the viewing.

DANCE SHOW

The sixth edit that I was told to do by Andrea was to edit the NWKC Dance Show, it was a 3 camera show, which meant that I needed to sync up all the cameras with the audio, which was surprisingly not time consuming. It was a lucky hit with me as I lined up all the clips and audio and found when they all started and then cut at that point in time. It worked. Once it was done, I could then cut between the 3 cameras without much effort. I then set-up the sequence and imported the files, synced up the cameras and audio, and then the editing began.

For this specific piece of work, I needed to make sure that the cuts matched the beats to the music, this was difficult and time consuming because of the fact that the music kept changing and the pace was changing with it. This took a bit of time to get perfect and I screwed up a few times during, causing me to start over once or twice. Although, it was worth it in the end as it now doesn’t look that bad.

I also needed to make sure that the cuts made sense because if it doesn’t then it would look weird and confuse people when watching. I felt like I did the best I could to show how good the Dancers were. Which was tricky since I can’t dance, so I don’t know what dance moves were good or not.

I exported it and uploaded it like all the rest.

“Our story is based around murder and revenge. The story starts

with the murderer and his friend walking down a road, a hooded figure then walks past them both and stabs the friend. The friend dies. The murderer then partakes in a revenge scheme and tracks down the man who killed his friend. He stalks him for a few months until the time is right and attacks him in a car park. The story also involves flashbacks of the incident whilst the murder starts.”

 We will be filming for approximately 7 days, 3 days for MAIN murder, 3 days for FLASHBACK murder, 1 day for planning.

 The first day will, introduce the murderer, and the victim. The murderer will look out the window with binoculars, staring down into the path, showing the Victim walking. The room will be filled with paper, and pictures, also a knife will be shown on the table.

It will show that the murderer has been hunting this person down for a long time.

 The second, third, and fourth day will, begin the murder sequence. The murderer stalks the victim into a car park, where the victim is about to enter a car. The murderer lunges with a knife and the victim notices and blocks it, causing a mini fight scene, and ending up with the victims death.

 The fifth, sixth, and seventh day will, show the murderers friend’s death. The victim stabbing him in the chest. The murderer holds his friends limp body, glaring at the camera, showing death will come of this.

 There will be no voicing but still have audio, for example:

Music, footsteps, groans.

1) This is a mid-shot for our documentary. It was a rush to create this shot as we didn’t have a lot of time with the interviewee. The lighting could have improved a little in the background, as well as the props itself. All we had in the same shot was hats. Personally it got boring and not showing the WAIF fashion.

2) This is another mid shot. The outdoor light was too bright and we should of changed the lighting of the camera. Again, all we could show was the hats. The background was also pretty basic, and could’ve flipped the shot so we we’re facing into a more lengthened shot for a shallow depth of field. The mic is showing but I was told thats not important. The focus was slightly off, but it wasn’t as noticeable.

3) Another mid shot. This is by far the worst shot, it was a great shot before hand but then the director changed the shot through it and it cut of his head and changed the focus. No idea why. The hats are still there and the bush in the background was in more focus than the interviewee. Lighting was burning his face slightly.

UNIT 36 Interview Technique for Creative Media

For creating an interview, there are many techniques, which are needed.

First a story is needed. A story is a structure so you can have a beginning and an end. Without a story, the documentary will be terrible and will make no sense.

Before you get started filming the interview, you will need to find an interviewee, probably would be best for someone who is easily understandable and can connect with the audience. After that, creating questions will be needed. Relevant questions to either their by Coupon2Mac"> business

or personal life, which is still engaging.

 After questions are created, you must find a location to film the interview, ask around to find/rent a place to do it. This might take a while but don’t lose hope.

When finding the location, don’t forget to look for a non-echoing room, and also a room that isn’t boring. Add colour, by Coupon2Mac"> posters

, or props, preferably relevant to the interview. It would be good to film at the interviewees house for their personal questions and their business location for their business questions.

 When setting up an interview, it is better to use 2 cameras as the editor has a better selection to use, plus, audiences will get bored of the same shot otherwise.

Possibly place one to the right of him/her and make it a close up, not too right though as profile shots are terrible for interviews.

Another can go to the left and make it a mid shot.

 Sound is important! Especially for interviews, make sure you can hear the interviewee nice and clear.

I prefer to use radio mics as they’re clear and can clip onto the interviewee without the crew having to hold a boom pole.

 Lighting is necessary as well , visuals are important. The camera might not reveal the room to the audience, so lighting will shine onto the interviewee, or the props so they can be shown fully. Use Kino Flow lights as they do the trick and help see our target.

The number of questions you ask the interviewee varies between the amount of research you have got. Research is an important thing to it all. Without research, the questions will be basic and the interviewee will not give you the answers to structure your story. The documentary will then make no sense.

Murder is often overlooked in the nation and is usually involved with acceptance. But people can often tick and do whatever it takes to honour them. People often can go insane after loved ones die, possibly not permanently. Murder can bring the dark side to people.

 This drama shows an aftermath of what happens to man when their best friend gets murdered in front of him. It adapts his mind and makes his persistence get the better of him. He will stop at nothing to avenge his best friends death.

 SUGGESTED ELEMENTS

1. Planning: Mystery and depressive atmosphere, with a man stalking the murderer.

1.     Looking back: Thinking about the day it happened and how it affected him.

2.     The end: The night he finally got his vengeance.

Factual Production Essay - Donovan Marsden

For this essay I am looking at “Super-Size me”. It is a documentary created only for controversy and for the public to know the true colors of fast food restaurants, specifically the all and loving McDonalds. “Super-Size Me” Has been seen across the world, but didn’t take effect until 2009, even though it came out in 2006.

Ratings are reasonable:

Netflix – 4 stars out of 5 (Red)

IMDb – 7.3 Stars out of 10

It was nominated for an Oscar and won 10 other awards whilst being nominated 7 times in other things.

The story is extremely controversial as McDonalds is getting shunned for their food as it is unhealthy and are making this era of man, obese.

The beginning of the documentary, a wide shot of a group of kids sitting outside, all different race. Ie: Black and White, singing the fast food song, happily. Straight after a quote shows of what the founder of McDonalds said.

“Look after the customer and the business will take care of itself”

A shot of the American flag, establishing the movie properly starting and also showing the audience what country they have used for their experiment. V.O, With pictures of how America is overweight and obese, which also a small back story of the directors life.

Cover shots make sense to what the director says, for example when he said “bad for your health” a cut away of a man smoking shows up. It is not relevant to Fast food but at the same time it may gain some sort of connection to the audience as this is only the beginning and the audience doesn’t fully understand that Fast food is bad.

Animations are shown during to make the documentary appealing to watch. Timelapses are also shown as visually it needs to look appealing for the audience to all in all feel like they’re right in their argument.

VO, Changes to him walking to the camera talking at 4 minutes and 8 seconds, Obviously all in those four minutes he has explained most of the things that need to get the ball rolling. He then, without saying it directly, explains that he will be taking on the challenge of eating McDonalds 3 times a day for 1 month. He also says the words “Super-Size Me” Just so the audience can feel connected, already knowing the title to the documentary.

Introduction pictures of Fast food, which includes, burgers, fries, “salad” and soft drink.

The whole documentary will circle McDonalds and McDonalds only, with the mention of a few others like KFC.

A bunch of tests was held, including, blood tests, blood pressure, height, weight, (Bmi) and a bunch more. They also had him do exercise to see his full potential in press ups, treadmill and other things.

At the end of it they tell him that his body is great, all because now at the end of the experiment you will notice a much more drastic change in his physical appearance and movement.

They state that there are 83 McDonalds in Virginia ALONE and are a ton more in Mississippi.

Day 1 includes the rules of how this experiment will work and a bunch of vox poxs resulting in the way Americans feel about McDonalds and they gave biased answering and cut out all the people who said McDonalds was good. Although at the beginning of the montage of Vox Poxs they asked the community where their favorite Fast Food places are and a few people said “McDonalds”.

The had a lot of trouble creating this as they were shunning the work of McDonalds and other fast foods, although without actually saying bad things about them, personally, the visuals of what happened to the director was determined enough to take effect on the audience. Some McDonald locations declined them from filming in the locations and wanted to shut down this experiment but as he was paying for food and a lot of it, they could not decline business. They asked several people asking their opinions in the matter and the majority said they love fast food so they had a lot of editing to make sure the audience knew that Fast food was bad.

The entire project took 1 and a half to film and was then edited for another 2 months. It went off with a hit and got the attention it needed.

Research Assignment - How did research influence and effect my documentary

My documentary is WAIF Fashion, which is a small business run by Scott Cruft. Our team had to do a lot of research for this topic, as personally we had no idea what fashion truly was. I mean how do we know if we're asking the right questions if we had no idea what we we're truly asking. So we sat a computer and researched lots about the fashion industry and clothing in general to find respectful questions.

We also went to Youtube and found a few interesting ways to interview people. There was one video where they were filming what appears to be lumber jack. They had 2 cameras, one behind the other filming in the same angle, apart from one was a close up and one was a medium close up. It was interesting and it would be interesting to add to the documentary. We have yet to film our documentary as there we're errors in previous filming, i.e: Files corrupted, files lost, low quality. So we are filming soon with the new information on how to film interviews. We even researched what would be the best way from the interviewee to be seated. We found out if they are seated diagonally from the interviewer, it is more easier as the dead space cannot be shown either.

Audio is a difficult procedure, especially as we are a 4 person group. 2 people on cameras, 1 person on lighting and the other needing to do sound. So instead we have researched to use radio mics instead of the RODE shotgun mic. It will be easier and clearer as well.

Research is an extremely important part of pre production as without it, there will not be anyway we could continue. Research allows us to know how to ask questions, what shots to take, for example I am wanting to have a close up shot with a mid shot from the opposite angle for 1 interview, whilst on another I would want to attempt my own version of the lumber jack scene.

I had also researched some cover shots in documentaries, for example, if Scott we're to mention needles and threads I would show needles and threads. I knew what Cover shots we're, but I researched to know how to successfully show them.

We were going to use different ways to do this documentary, i.e: participatory, or reflective. Both slightly difficult to pull off, instead we are going to pull off a natural documentary like most people. It will make it easier and not allow us to get too stressed.

Our WAIF documentary will hopefully turn out good due to our research in the matter.

What is research? Research is obtaining various forms of data and information that can allow you to find out factual statements and form opinions which can help you start of the documentary research and the actual project. There are different types of research: Primary Secondary Quantitative Qualitative

Why is research important? Media production is a complex process and research is the starting point for productions of any scale. The films and television programmes that we watch, the radio programmes and podcasts that we listen to, the newspapers and magazines that we read and the websites and computer games that we interact with have all been thoroughly researched and planned in the pre-production stages. In the first part of this unit you will learn about the different purposes of research within the media industries.  to gather a range of information relevant to the content of the production, or to allow for the effective planning of a production schedule.

Primary research: Primary research is research that you collect yourself. A researcher sometimes knows how to use primary and secondary data in their writing. Primary research includes, surveys, interviews, and observations. Primary research is a great benefit to your research, Primary research is more valuable to your research due to it being from your experiences, it’s all well and good reading it from someone else’s experience, but it may not be as reliable.

Secondary research: Secondary research includes existing research, unlike primary which is all first time collection.  Secondary research is the most popular use of researching. It involves collecting data through other peoples research commonly called Secondary research. You mainly find secondary research by collecting it from the distributor or origin.

Quantitative research: Quantitative research is a more smarter approach which allows a measure of what people think from a figured POV. For example, if you wanted to know how many people are needed for the documentary, you could use this research to help with it.

Qualitative research: This method of research attempts to understand the 'why' behind a person's decision to act through methods such as in-depth interviews, focus groups and observational research. It also helps to describe facts and figures for the person. There are times where it is harder to put into a paragraph/ essay, as it will need to be written into own words and have an opinionated description. It needs to have full amount of description.
