“I may be new but… I’m pretty sure this is my office?” Adrian smirked a little as he set down a box with most of his books. He’d been spending the first few days setting up and getting to know the place. “Do you need something?”

The freckled boy raised his head from the desk looking around confused. Donovan remembered hiding in here to get away from everyone and ended up falling asleep sometime between 4 and 5 this morning. He stretched still half asleep and looked at the man confused. “This is an office now? It was just storage space before.” he managed before yawning. “Does that mean I gotta leave now?”

Of course the brunette had left her door open because she’d been too busy to not. Her new intern wasn’t quite any help at all, so the stack of files she was carrying left her with no hands, but after getting bored of going through them, she’d found herself scrolling through facebook on her phone, and her eyes caught the photos her brother’d posted of them and their mom when they were actually happy. It was quick to bring tears to her eyes but before she could even cry them, she felt a presence at the door. Dropping her phone to her lap, the brunette looked up. All she could hope was that she didn’t look as messy as she felt. “What? Can I help you with something? I’m a little busy.”

Donovan shifted his weight from one foot to the other awkwardly as he stood in the doorway still not sure how he wanted to do this. He wanted answers, but whenever he tried to get answers staff always seemed to bush it off or try to change the subject. Maybe he wasn’t being forceful enough? When his therapist’s attention finally snapped up to him he felt himself flinch back a little and took a gulp of fresh air. “Well I’m busy too!” he retorted quickly, even if that was a lie. There was never anything for him to do, especially when he was typically awake all night. “And yes, you can help me.” he took a step into the room trying his hardest not to lose his nerves. “I wanna go home. I don’t BELONG here, cause I’m not sick or insane like the rest of them. I mean, YOU’RE my therapist, can’t you, like, do something?”

“I said where is my BROTHER?” The child shouted, though more in distress than anger. He hadn’t seen his brother since the Canker Man had taken his mother away. Some doctors had even tried to convince him that his brother was no more than a figment of imagination (sooth his trauma over the lack of contact), but the boy was determined.

Donovan quickly held up his hands as he tried to quiet the boy. Last time Malachi and Donovan had spoken he had tried to cheer the boy up and subsequently brought up his brother. He hadn’t meant to give him false hope but now it was there and gone. “I--I um I don’t know...” he trailed off looking around as the staring eyes. “I said that maybe your brother would come here... I didn’t actually know if he would or not..”

It was certainly a change to the young girl when she arrived at Brielle. Being so young and pretty healthy until her leukaemia diagnosis, Violet had barely spent any time in hospitals much less anywhere like this. She was lost and unsure of what to do, sitting down in the corridor with her back against the wall and toy monkey in her hands as she looked around. Her eyes locked onto another person and she gave a tiny smile.

“Hi, I’m…I don’t know what we have to do. I’m Violet”

Donovan kept his eyes down as they were close to closing from lack of sleep until he saw the legs of someone and he lifted his eyes slightly to see before offering a small smile of his own. “That’s a pretty name. I’m Donovan.” he leaned against the opposite wall and slid down to the floor rubbing at his eyes to try and wake up more. “Don’t worry. There isn’t really anything you HAVE to do. You get assigned therapists and a doctor if you’re sick and they make appointments. Other than that, Brielle doesn’t really have any rules... At least it didn’t before the new doctor showed up.”

Payson couldn’t tell if he was trying to latch onto a ‘dumb blonde’ rhetoric or not, but she decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. “Well, that cancels out 49 other options I suppose,” she sighed. “Creepy building, crazy kids, and ghosts? I feel like I’ve seen this movie before…..” Payson joked, although it wasn’t all light hearted. Obviously, those kinds of horror movies never ended well. “Don’t stop now, you’re on a roll… right you are– I’m Payson,”

Donovan laughed and nodded. “Not everyone here is crazy though. I mean, there are some weird kids like um--” he gestured down the hall where the yelling kid had previously run down. “--But most of us aren’t that bad. And ah-ha! My detective skills are amazing!” the boy gushed laughing. “I’m Donovan, I’m in the psychiatric ward, what about you? Maybe I could show you to your ward so you don’t have to carry your stuff around with you everywhere. I mean, unless you want to.”

Donovan tried to keep smiling even though he had the sinking feeling that the blonde didn’t want to talk to him. His smiled soon faded as she mentioned a name he certainly wasn’t familiar with. “Payson... I um no I don’t know her.” he replied softly as he scrunched his eyebrows together. It had been a few months now and he hadn’t been sent back to Sir and Sir hadn’t contacted him either. “Well um... How is the outside world?” he questioned a bit unsure. Apparently not many people knew about the apocalypse so he had learned to phrase things more carefully.

As she arrived at Brielle, Payson’s high was finally wearing down. Once her family told her she was to be sent to this insane asylum, she knew better than to make a run for it… at least she could get high on the way there. But now, she was finally forced to take in reality. She looked pretty put together for an addict checking into rehab, and although that was the norm for her, it was already becoming obvious that she stood out and didn’t quite fit in here. Slinging her small bag over her shoulder, Payson entered the rest of the building, and no sooner did a kid whiz by her shouting random words and flailing his arms. She stopped in her tracks, eyes questioning what had just happened, visibly confused. Was this some sort of weird, bad trip?

“Jesus….” she said under her breath, “we’re not in Kansas anymore…”. What side of a twisted rainbow had she been forced to venture over now?

“I think someone told me we’re on Oregon if that helps.” Donovan replied oblivious to the Wizard of Oz reference and to the fact that the blonde assumable knew where she was. His eyes traced after the other kid who was screaming and laughed a little. “Don’t mind him though, he says it’s because he sees ghosts, but I don’t know if I believe that there are actually ghosts... Unless you could see a ghost chasing him.” the freckled boy chuckled lightly to himself. “Anyway, I don’t recognize you, I’m guessing by that and your bag you’re new here?”

He had been told before by the other kids back at Sir’s place that he talked too much and too loud, but he still continued to speak to the blonde. “I was just um asking you if other patients had arrived with you or not.”

Sierra had managed to retain her notepad, that was at least something in the wake of what had happened, a little dignity despite the swelling bruise on her face that a slightly unkind police officer had given her. She walked around the room in circles for a little while, eventually slumping into a chair she slid her notebook to the person next to her: “This is so boring, and I haven’t even been able to sleep in days”

Donovan looked down at the notepad as it was slid town him, laughing a little and nodding. “I haven’t been able to sleep either--um but I guess that’s kind of normal for me.” he chuckled turning more so he could face Sierra instead of just talking to a notepad. “I say we make a run for it!” he replied with a sly smile ready for a bit of trouble. Even though Donovan was usually more timid and a rule follower, he was sick of being in the same room and having officers scowling and glaring at him all the time. “I mean, what’s the worst that could happen if we run? They throw us back here?”

For a moment, Malachi’s expression shifted to one of deep thought. Perhaps the boy was right, the police had always been the good guys and these men did look like police. “They’re here to save us?” Malachi perked up, his eyes brightening just ever so slightly. “They’re going to bring us a surprise!” The small boy somehow discovered a newfound joy in the situation, a smile spreading onto his face. “Do you think they’ll let me see my brother?”

Donovan was relieved to see the younger boy perk back up, and just hoped to God that he wasn’t wrong about all of this. Giving others false hope may ease some of the pain or anxiety, but when it’s gone it hurts even worse. “Maybe they will. I mean, I dunno. I don’t even know who your brother is.” he thought for a moment before there was another light bulb. “Was he also supposed to come to Brielle? Some of my friends were supposed to come here, so maybe we’ll both get to see people we know!”

Skylar had been in the med bay when the officers arrived. She was recovering from a particuarly bad seizure, her epilepsy had been triggered by the fact she had lost track of her meds schedule with all the chaos and that had also contributed to it being mad. The police offers didn’t seem to care about this however, and so she had been moved to the cafeteria and was now lying on the floor with a rolled up jacket under her head and portable oxygen still attached. She was a little out of it and people could clearly tell she was poorly, but her eyes scanned the room though she was unable to move (they also hadn’t cared enough to bring her wheelchair with them, though technically she could use it still with the portable oxygen her body was just still slightly weakened). She spotted someone and motioned them over, hoping they might want to talk and keep her company.

“Hey, are you okay?” her voice was even softer than usual and quiet, still a little crackly but she wanted to talk if she couldn’t do anything else “Hopefully we can go back soon…”

As the girl motioned for him to come over he hesitated for a second, but decided it was better than being scared AND alone. Donovan was shocked though when she asked if he was okay. Shouldn’t he be the one asking that. He nodded slowly as he sat down next to her. “I’m okay.” he cleared his throat, eyes following the clear tube that ran back to the oxygen tank and couldn’t help but laugh a little. “It’s like a robot or something,” he laughed childishly before looking back at Skylar. “Are YOU okay? I mean, laying on the ground doesn’t look super comfy, but maybe it is.” he shrugged trying his best not to insult her.

Malachi moved himself closer to the older boy, for both the benefit of hearing him better and the comfort of having someone beside him. The child hugged his knees nervously, laying his head against them as he squeezed his eyes tightly shut. “But I don’t want to go somewhere else!” He pleaded, though Donovan had no control at all over the situation or what was to come. “I like it here!”

Donovan nodded, even though Malachi had his eyes shut tight. “I like it here too.” He bit the inside of his cheek trying to find some sort of light at the end of the tunnel, anything that might make him feel better. “Police are usually the good guys, right? They help and save people in movies. And when they show up it means something bigger and better is going to happen in the movie,” or it meant the main character was in trouble, but Donovan wasn’t about to mention that. “So... Maybe at the end of all of this there will be a big surprise or something. We just gotta wait a little longer.”

She’s gotten better at hiding her anxiety. It never leaves her, but the therapists have shown her enough coping mechanisms that she is, at least, able to breathe. She knows she can see Em whenever she needs to, even if they aren’t always together. Right up until the chaos erupts around her, worse than the storm in January, worse than Em’s diagnosis, because at least Ingrid had been there to hold her. A cop had grabbed her to drag her to the cafeteria, where they were all supposed to be, and Ingrid had SCREAMED the whole way.

Her throat grew raw and her voice rasped against it, but still she kept screaming and squirming and fighting until the cop hit her across the face and snarled for her to shut up. It had the desired effect; nobody had ever hit Ingrid before, and as she was tossed into the cafeteria, policeman disappearing off to find more stragglers, she curled up in the corner and cradled her cheek, which was growing more red and more swollen with each moment.

He could hear the screams as someone was being brought to the cafeteria. Donovan had been in his room when all of this had started and the rooms were one of the first places the men in uniforms had checked so he had been here now for a few minutes. Time seemed to pass slowly as one by one more patients were brought to the cafeteria without explanation. As the doors swung open he spotted a familiar face and sprang to his feet ready to run over to her. He hadn’t even recognized the screaming to be her because he hadn’t even ever heard her speak. His legs froze though when the man hit her and he shrunk away, pulling himself into a hug and squeezing tight. A doctor had promised no one would hurt him here, yet the evidence was right before him. Once the officer had left he took a shakey breath and made his way towards Ingrid.

He knelt down beside her hands hoovering trying to figure out what to do. What did the other kids always tell Donovan to make him feel better? “It’s okay, shhh it’s okay. I-I’m sure he didn’t mean it. He was just stressed.” he spouted the same excuses that he was always told as he looked around for someone who could help them, but there were only panicked patients. “Are you bleeding at all?”

The only thing Malachi was aware of was the adrenaline in his veins, the funding of his heart in his ears, and the men marching around with loud voices and angry foot steps. He swallowed harshly and placed his hands over his ears to block out the chaos, eyes wide and afraid as he turned to the seemingly equally helpless person beside him. “What’s happening?”

Donovan shook his head violently as he watched the men in uniform. His anxiety was through the roof, probably more like into space by now, and his heart was pounding in his chest. “I-I don’t know.” he managed to speak and offering a small smile to the kid. He wanted to put a brave face on for the other, especially since he looked younger than Donovan. But facts were facts and he was scared too. It was like when the people in uniform had come to take him away from Sir... Maybe this would be the same. “M-Maybe there here to take us somewhere else. Somewhere more safe.” the freckled boy offered as he tried to somehow turn this hectic situation positive.

It’s not the words that upset her, it’s the volume. It makes her ears BURN and her head hurt. Her sensory processing seems to have taken several steps backward since the downfall of Brielle - no therapists, no regulated medication. Small feet stumble backwards as hands fly to her ears. ‘‘ Don’t you shout at me, I was trying to help. ’’ is all Cecily manages, eyes narrowing as she takes another few steps backward. ‘‘ don’t ask me, I don’t want you to snap at me again. ’’

Donovan was a loud kid in general, he always got scolded for being too noisey when he was home. But he thought some of the kids younger than him were noisey too, so he didn’t really understand. “But you broke the screen.” he was still a little angry about that, but this time he tried to keep his voice level. He looked back at the phone and contemplated on if it would explode or not. “Okay okay, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to snap.” The freckled boy bent down as he tried to get the girl to look at him. “If you help me with my phone I’ll play with you later. And no more yelling I promise.”
