An Open Letter For The LGBT Community And Our Allies.
I post this with hesitation not because I'm torn or have doubt about the message but because I know what it might mean in terms of how I am treated with potential to my career and relationships.
The issue that I have, is the media (primarily) making this about what MEN think, whether it be for or against and they're not hearing the WOMEN, what the women, mothers, sisters, and daughters are saying. I love my community (LGBT) but I can not sign on for this because as an objective listener I know that most people are NOT coming from a place of hate or bigotry rather genuine concern..instead of having a real conversation regarding the issue people are shutdown and told to educate themselves and that their fears and concerns or illogical and petty. That's irresponsible and unfair.
We live in a country where "Freedom of Speech" is a right afforded to its citizens yet I've come to realize this is a fallacy, the term should be "Freedom of Speech..as long as we agree.." that would be more accurate and to the point. As I stated in my podcast, I consider myself to be a "Progressive" but in being progressive, I understand it's more than a title, it's a lifestyle. Being progressive means you can sit opposite a person with opposing views and have a meaningful dialogue,work towards and be able to find a happy medium so as to PROGRESS and move forward into the future, together.
But alas I feel my brothers and sisters of the LGBT community and our allies have gotten this one wrong, we are becoming the bigots and the bullies, threatening to sue and smear the names of people that have a difference of opinion. Yes there are bigots, but we can NOT label each person that disagrees with us a "bigot" or "homophobe" or "transphobic" I fear this form of grandstanding, bullying,browbeating, and silencing will create a rift between us and "them".
I've always been perceptive in "knowing" and my feeling is that whether it's said or not, the tide is turning against the LGBT community, I think people want equality as do I, but they want fairness. I believe most people have come to accept the "Trans" movement as legitimate or at least don't stand in the way of people trying to live their best life. What they are saying that most refuse to hear is, it's not about trans women, rather people that will use a legitimate movement to manipulate and abuse the rights of said community, I don't see the issue in acknowledging that concern as it is also legitimate..and working to patch in loopholes that may exist to protect the rights and freedoms of all. Instead the media panders and tells these women and parents their concerns are bullshit and make no sense..that they should get over it, and the threats ensue, in this case financial, which is wrong from my perspective.
If we claim to be "Progressive" then BE progressive, its not just a title. Talk with people to understand their concerns ask questions on both sides, lets meet in the middle and accommodate both parties to the best of our ability. We don't have to alienate women and parents in order to appease our trans brothers and sisters. This is just my humble and genuine opinion.
