Since seeing so many posts on mental health awareness I feel like I’m ready to say my piece. The reality of mental health does not stop at depression and anxiety. Although these are common symptoms of mental health, they can sit beside much darker actions no one wants to talk about. Why? Because they’re fucking scary. People with mental health problems can be dangerous. People with mental health problems hurt people they love. They scream. They cry. They manipulate. They threaten and emotionally blackmail to get what they want. Psychotic episodes leave them unable to even remember the terrible things they’ve said and done an hour ago. They’re selfish. The reality of mental health is mood swings that leave people around you terrified of upsetting you because they don’t know what you’ll do next. People worry if you’re too long in the bathroom in case you’re hurting yourself again. People with mental health problems are not always brave. They are weak and are unable to deal with situations in a rational way. They have breakdowns that leave anyone who is a witness traumatised. They can be poisonous to everyone around them. It is not always okay to not be okay. People with serious mental health problems need professional help, not a cup of tea and their favourite tv show. No amount of love and support from friends or family can fix them. Being diagnosed with a serious mental health problem is a life sentence. This is the reality of mental health. Sorry, it’s not that cute.
