Went up to Minot, ND for the State Fair this weekend (saw Journey in concert, woohoo) - I also insisted on a brief side trip to run about photographing this replica stave church the city has in its Scandinavian Heritage Park (sadly, it was closed, so no interior shots, but I had a fun 10/15 minutes running around).
This building is a replica of the Gol Stave Church - originally from Gol, Hallingdal, Norway; now located in Oslo, Norway.
Stave churches are medieval wooden Christian church buildings. While there are some that still exist in other countries, including Sweden, the vast majority of original stave churches still in existence are located in Norway. The buildings are built with a post and lintel system of timber framing. Because many of the original builders were also ship builders, it became tradition to build stave churches with only wood - no metal nails or fittings to structurally secure the building together.

Art History Meme—3/9 Paintings
Artist Unknown, Wilton Diptych, c. 1395-1399
A rare and exemplary example of English Gothic painting, the Wilton Diptych was commissioned by Richard II sometime in the latter part of his reign, although the exact date is a matter of some controversy among art historians. The small two-paneled devotional piece depicts Richard with English saints, King Edmund the Martyr and King Edward the Confessor, and John the Baptist on one side with the Heavenly Court on the other. The figures are painted in tempera, and the gold leaf background has been decoratively tooled. As an International Gothic style painting, the Wilton Diptych contains elements from other European courts. The slender, graceful figures show French influence, while their softness is reminiscent of Bohemian art.
Accompanied by his favorite saints, Richard kneels before the Queen of Heaven similarly to how a noble would be presented at court. Mary holds Christ, who reaches out to Richard, blessing him. One of the angels holds a standard bearing the Cross of Saint George, and atop it is an orb containing a map of England. The eleven angels, identically dressed in blue and crowned with pink roses, both react to the scene and interact with each other. The Wilton Diptych depicts Richard as a devoted worshiper and affirms his belief in the divine right of kings. By giving his pennant to Mary, he is entrusting England to her care. Richard’s robes are made of gold and red vermillion and decorated with his symbol, the white stag, and rosemary springs, the emblem of his first wife, Anne of Bohemia. In addition, Richard wears a livery badge with a white stag, as do all the angels. The outside of the diptych also bears an image of a white stag laying on a bed of rosemary together with the (fictional) coat of arms of Edward the Confessor.
Art History Meme: Themes or Series or Subjects (1 of 6)
Historical painting is a genre in painting defined by its subject matter rather than artistic style. History paintings usually depict a moment in a narrative story, rather than a specific and static subject.
History paintings were traditionally regarded as the highest form of Western painting, occupying the most prestigious place in the hierarchy of genres, and considered the equivalent to the epic in literature…Leon Battista Alberti had argued that multi-figure history painting was the noblest form of art, as being the most difficult, which required mastery of all the others, because it was a visual form of history, and because it had the greatest potential to move the viewer. He placed emphasis on the ability to depict the interactions between the figures by gesture and expression. (x)
