Thank you so much to everyone who submitted! The book math works out so I don't need any last minute submissions to get us to a round number. That's a wrap for this year :)
I love all the wonderful doodles you submitted and I can't wait to show them off in the final zine!
What's next?
Now the rest of the project is my job! Which means it is probably going to happen fairly slowly lol.
I'll go through submissions and start editing the photos and compiling the zine together. I'll be reaching out to some entrants with questions, or to confirm any decisions I might make (for example, if you asked me to collage several images of doodles together for you, I'll give you a chance to sign off on it.)
Specifically this year I have a few submissions of what seems to be several full pages of doodles, without a note telling me to collage them, so I'll want to check in with those people to see what they want me to include.
But don't expect that to come right away, because I have quite a lot of Life Things going on in the next couple weeks that will prevent this from being my top priority. As always, this is a fun personal project for me and I refuse to let it become an Obligation, so I make no promises on the timeline. Updates will be posted to this blog when there is news to share!
Happy almost-new year! I am happy to say that I am finally back to working on the doodle zine again!
I have started rounding up the images that were submitted and editing them (just cropping to the right dimensions and brightening any weird lightingâand don't worry, I'm cropping out rather than in when there's any risk of cutting off doodles.) If you sent me multiple images to collage together or I have to make any other changes I want to get your approval on, you'll probably hear from me soon via whatever contact info you left me in the form.
Thank you to all who submitted for your patience, I am looking forward to finally sharing the finished zine with you, hopefully soon <3
Hi! I've been meaning to make an update post, so thanks for the reminder.
Short answer: Probably December or January.
Long answer: I (@ilovedthestars, the person who single-handedly runs this blog & this zine) missed my window over the summer to get the zine done before I went back to school. (A later and longer submission window did me in, as did a busy August.) I've been hoping for a couple months that soon I'd be able to give an update saying "I've started working on editing and formatting the zine," but I simply haven't had time for that in between homework.
So here is an honest update: I'm alive, I have your submissions, I will be putting the zine together as soon as possible. Despite my own wishes to get it done sooner, "as soon as possible" is probably not before I am off school in December for my winter break. So realistically, that is when you can expect to hear from me about the zine.
My apologies to everyone who submitted and has been waiting for the zine much longer than I anticipated! Thank you for your patience, I am but one busy college student and this has unfortunately ended up on the long list of projects I love and am excited to work on but must leave aside until all my deadlines are met.
Ah, shucks. I thought the submissions were open until midnight. 26 submissions is so awesome!!! Excited to see it all put together :)
Hey friend! Sorry, that's on me for not communicating clearly about the exact time I'd close submissions until the last minute (I was expecting to need to extend them anyway, but it didn't work out that way).
I did fudge the numbers a bitâI'm actually at 29 right now, and 30 would be a round number for the Book Math. I decided to hold that spot open either for myself to fill it in with a doodle page of my own, or for a situation like this where someone just missed the cutoff. So if you've already made a submission and you'd like to claim that last spot, you can reach out!
Today is the LAST DAY to submit to the doodle zine!
If you've already submitted, thank you! I have 26 submissions, many more than last year. Looking forward to seeing all of them come together!
If you haven't submitted yetâget that in! Submissions will be open till at least 10pm US Eastern time today (I may leave them open overnight but no promises.) If you really want to submit but can't make it by then, reach out, I may be able to arrange an extension.
After 10pm eastern, I'm going to do the math and see if we're at a nice round number for the Book Math (we need a multiple of four minus two, for the pamphlet layout to work!) If we're just under, I may extend submissions for 1-3 first-come-first-serve slots to get us up to a good number. NO GUARANTEES on these so get your doodles in today! (I may also fill these with extensions so again, ask me if you need a few more days, especially if you want to guarantee a spot will be held for you!)
The newly extended deadline is Friday, July 25th. Submit via the google form in the pinned post, or DM this tumblr account! DMs and askbox are also open for any last-minute questions you may have.
I love all the doodles that have been sent in so far and I can't wait to see those that are submitted in these last few days!

Hello! Iâm Stars (@ilovedthestars) and I'd like to invite you to participate in the second issue of Doodle Zine!
This is a fun and very low-stakes collab zine, themed around doodles. You can check out the first issue from last summer here. Thereâs something so fun and personal about doodles, and they rarely get the appreciation that quote unquote âreal artâ does! They mostly exist in the margins of notebooks, on sticky notes, or on scraps of paper, and you usually wouldnât show them off to other people. But everyone has a different style of doodles, and itâs fun to see the creativity and whimsy of art that people make when theyâre not even really trying to âmake artâ!
There is no selection processâI will be including every submission that I feasibly can. I would like to emphasize that this is not an art zine, itâs a doodle zine! (Here are some examples of what Iâm talking about when I say âdoodles.â) The point is to have fun together, and I will not be holding you to any sort of artistic standard, so please donât hold yourself to one.
If youâre interested, I would love for you to draw some doodles, take a photo, and send them to me via this form! I will compile the submissions into both digital and printable versions (5.5x4.25" pamphlet format), and share them here on Tumblr when theyâre finished.
âď¸â¨ SUBMIT HERE! â¨đď¸
(The form requires a gmail sign in. If you donât have a gmail account or would prefer not to use the form, you can DM me on Tumblr or discord to submit)
This form will be accepting submissions for three weeks, until July 21st.
This is a fun summer project for me, so I make no promises about timelineâthe final release will be subject to my schedule and whims. I look forward to seeing all the wonderful doodles and getting to share this zine with all of you!
Submission guidelines are included in the form as well as below the cut. You can follow this tumblr for updates, and the askbox and DMs are open for any questions. Happy doodling!
Submission Guidelines
Doodle anything, as messy, scribbly, abstract, or silly as you want! This zine is about little moments of connection, not about artistic quality. Treat your page like the margins of your notebook during a long lecture (or doodle in the margins of your notebook during a long lecture and submit it!)
Your page of doodles will be 4.25 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall, or 1/4 of a sheet of US letter-sized paper. Either work at this size or be okay with me cropping to fit the dimensions. You may also submit a digital/physical collage of smaller doodles from several pages that fits these dimensions, or submit several images if you are okay with me collaging them for you.
Use whatever drawing tools you like, but know that light pencil might not show up well. The final zine files will be in full color, so feel free to use color in your submission! I encourage you to embrace the messiness of physical pen/pencil and paper, but digital doodles are also allowed if that's your preference.
Lined paper is fine. So is paper with stuff printed or written on it that you have doodled over/around (as long as there are no identifying/sensitive details, like the name of a school or workplace).
Sign your page somewhere with whatever name or username you're comfortable with, or indicate below that you chose to submit anonymously.
Take a photo! It doesn't have to be a great photo, but a decent photo will make it easier for me to edit. Try to have brightish light, no direct shadows on the paper, and a mostly straight-on angle. Leave the edges of the paper within the photo, no need to crop. I'll take care of the rest!
If there are any issues with your submission (like a photo I can't use) I will contact you and give you the chance to resubmit, so no worries.
5 days left! How are we feeling about our doodle zine submissions?
I already submitted đ
Oh right, I gotta get to that!
I don't know if I'm gonna make it, I could use a few extra days...
I'm not submitting this year / results

We're up to 12 submissions, and there's still room for plenty more! Testing the waters, I'm open to extending the deadline a bit if people need more time.
(There might be some short extensions regardless, due to Book Math! If you think you might have to slide in at the last minute, keep an eye out.)
Got a few new submissions since this went up, but also a lot of people who think they might need an extension! (And a few who apparently didn't even realize submissions were openâoops, apparently i haven't been annoying enough about boosting the submissions post!)
How do we feel about a 5-day extension, through Friday, July 25th? (That means one more week from tomorrow to submit your doodles)
extension thru the 25th?
yes please!!!!
I'm probably fine without
if you move the deadline i'll just procrastinate more...
5 more days might not be enough for me

Thank you to everyone who has submitted so farâI already have 7 submissions and I'm excited to see what else will come in :)

If you really want to get ahead on a doodle submission, feel free to look over the submission guidelines from last year. This year's will be slightly updated for clarity but not changed. No rush, thoughâthe submission period will be open at least 2 weeks like last year (I'm thinking possibly 3 this time?)
