As an artist Funakoshi didnāt merely learn theā¦

Playing "Hajime Yame" with Horses
Playing āHajime Yameā withĀ Horses
Iāve been reflecting back on my life and wondering why it is so natural for me to fall into a rhythm of intense training and teaching in martial arts. Eventually it occurred to me that my frame of reference is Dressage, considered an art in horsemanship. At first the parallels with martial arts werenāt that clear to me until I remembered that the discipline of Dressage was born of militaryā¦

Transcendent
Originally posted at Pacific Martial Arts on October 20, 2015
Some experiences are transcendent. When those moments are experienced with others they become a link in the shared memory of the group. This weekend at retreat our group shared such a moment. Each has their own version of if etched into memory. Each transposed their own meaning.
One of the themes we discussed at camp was emptiness. Oneā¦

One Kata
Originally posted at Pacific Martial Arts on October 24, 2017
I recently talked to a karate student whoās taken a break from karate to pursue other things. She was worried about getting back into karate because she felt like she wouldnāt remember anything. I told her, āI basically know one kata right now.ā
As you gain in belt level your own expectations of yourself increase accordingly. Eachā¦

Coping with Adversity

There are things people say to you that stick for years to come. I remember my manager at my first corporate gig, MTV Networks in New York City. He was new to management, being a creative like me, and of the deluge of information and requests that flowed through him to the team he had this to say: āI just let it wash over me.ā
It isā¦

I recently completed a 10 day Vipassana course taught by S.N. Goenka and have committed to continue the practice for the next year at least. Iāve been wanting to share about my Vipassana retreat experience on this blog but wasnāt sure how. The issue is that Vipassana and karate are very distinct practices. While a Vipassana practiceā¦

Getting into the zone is a feeling reported by many martial artists and itās one of the rewards of intensive training. This phenomenon of complete concentration can be cultivated.
Tuesdays have become the day I train for 3 hours at the dojo. It may seem like a long time to some of you but I can tell you the benefits of getting at leastā¦

Itās official, my hand is broken. Not just sprained. The latest X-rays show a small chip of bone floating where it shouldnāt be just off the bottom of the pinky.
That tiny chip plus a hairline fracture on the bone itself has given me so much trouble & pain in the past several months. Itās amazing how often I have managed to re-injureā¦

Fear, Intimidation, and SelfĀ Defense

As a female its been important for me to learn the art of self defense. Unfortunately for women just walking around in the world we are often the target of male aggression. For many women our upbringings didnāt prepare us to physically defend ourselves against an attacker larger & with more muscle mass then ourselves. Most girls didnātā¦
