“But I know about suffering; if that helps. I know that it ends. I ain’t going to tell you no lies, like it always ends for the better. Sometimes it ends for the worse. You can suffer so bad that you can be driven to a place where you can’t ever suffer again: and that’s worse.”
— If Beale Street Could Talk, James Baldwin (via decreation)
It’s important that an oppressed class defines itself to fight against their oppression. By defining and naming the oppressed class, the oppressor class and the kind of oppression, we are given the means to target and dismantle inequality and oppression. Taking away the definition of a certain kind of oppression takes away the power to fight the oppression. Our class is female, our oppressors are male, or oppression is misogyny. Everyone who wants to erase or redefine these definitions and terms hates women and wants women to continue to suffer. Males do this for obvious reasons: They have never seen womens oppression, they cause womens oppression and they want to continue both. Women who do this want to distance themselves from their own class to either gain favor from the oppressor class or wanting to “identify out of” their oppressed class to avoid the negative associations and suffering that comes with it (which doesn’t work).
Erasing and denying class structures and structural oppression is a very liberal and neoliberal thing. Liberals see individuals, not social structures and class. Individualism according to them leads to more equality because “everyone is seen for the individual they are”, everyone is their own bubble with their own issues and tragedies. Nobody is better, nobody is worse. Everyone is just themselves. In reality individualism makes oppression invisible by putting the responsibility for their well being on the individual instead of seeing a social structure that targets all individuals belonging to a certain group/class. You’ve all seen this with “I don’t see color” in regards to racism. It is the same individualist approach described above. “I don’t see color, I only see the individual person”. By only seeing the individual person who happens to be black, who happens to experience bullying for their skin color, who happens to get killed for their skin color, they are acitvely denying the social structure that is in place. By ignoring race as the tool of the oppressors, by ignoring racism as the structural form of oppression, by ignoring black people as the oppressed class and white people as the oppressing class, they are actively supporting the oppressors. Because the only people who benefit from individualism and from ignoring oppressive social structures are the oppressors: White people as a class in a structurally racist society, men as a class in a patriarchal society, capitalists as a class in a capitalist society that oppresses workers etc. If you warp the definition of the material (!) reality (!) of an oppressive structure you are actively fighting against the liberation of the oppressed class in that structure. Saying that “women aren’t female”, “women don’t have vaginas”, “everyone can call themselves a woman, it’s no big deal” you are actively denying that there is an oppressive structure that causes women to be raped, killed and abused for being born female. You are denying that women are an afterthought in medical science and female specific illnesses are rarely treated the correct way (most of the time there isn’t a correct way because there were no studies done). It is denying that FGM is a thing that happens to females because they are female. Individualism is one hell of a drug because if you follow that train of thought just a little bit further you have to come to the conclusion, that girls who get their genitals mutilated and cut out are to be seen as an individual issue. Sucks for you little girl, but I just don’t see how there is any structure in place that makes this happen to you. Maybe try identifying out of being female next time? When you tell a woman that got raped, that got mutilated, that is traumatized, that lives the reality of being female, that there “isn’t any structure in place that oppresses her”, you are telling her, that the statistics are either wrong or that women naturally happen to be raped a lot more. The cause of her suffering (an oppressive social structure and her oppressor: misogyny and males) becomes invisible and thus protects the oppressors. I’m getting a bit side tracked so back to my point: Please understand things like class, oppressive structures, individualism and what the concept of being liberal/neoliberal REALLY means. It doesn’t mean freedom in any good sense at all. It means freedom for the individual to do anything they want because liberalism at its core thinks that everyone is equal and everyone has to opportunity to do everything they want to. That sounds nice at first. But doesn’t work out if you put social structures and oppression into the mix.
Because no, we are not all equal. We may be born equal but societal structures are a reality that forms our lives (being born equal isn’t even a thing for girls that get killed for being girls as soon as they are born). And denying that reality doesn’t help the oppressed. It helps the oppressors. When the oppressed think that their misery is their own individual fault because they have the same starting point as the oppressors, they have no means to rise up and fight against their oppression. When the oppressed don’t aknowledge the structures that oppress them they can’t fight them.
reblogging my own post here because liberals just don’t get that they aren’t activists or leftists or anti capitalist or feminists by being individualist idiots

there’s nothing purer or better than how much kids enjoy being picked up and then hurled at soft surfaces
anyone who’s ever been around kids for ay meaningful amount of time should know exactly how much kids long to be hefted up and then just fuckin tossed! it’s so good! they’re so excited to get fucking tossed around like a sack of potatoes it’s so pure
Why do kids love it so much? Like I remember when I was a kid at diving practice during the summer, the best part was when one if the coaches would toss you into the deep end. And in gymnastics coaches would toss us into the foam pit. Do kids just have a evolutionary urge to die?

“Vestibular sense provides information about where the body is in relation to its surroundings. This is the sense that helps you understand balance, and it connects with all the other senses.
When the vestibular system does not develop properly all other senses will struggle to function properly. Without a strong vestibular sense, kids will have no choice but to fidget, get frustrated, experience more falls and aggression, get too close to people when talking, and struggle with focusing and listening. Because they literally cannot help it.”
“Here are a few ways to support your child’s vestibular sense:
Spinning in circles.
Using a Merry-Go-Round.
Rolling down a hill.
Spinning on a swing.
Going upside down.
Climbing trees.
Rocking.
Jumping rope.
Summersaults or cartwheels.
Using monkey bars.
Skating.
Going backwards.
Swimming.
Dancing.
Wheel-barrel walks.”
Yeeting kids, spinning them, flipping them upside down, tossing them in the air, and otherwise disrupting their balance temporarily, is Important For Their Development, specifically for their vestibular sense.
Kids love this because they NEED it.
In other words: Don’t forget to calibrate your child’s GPS!
YEET THE CHILD FOR THEIR HEALTH
Hi! Paediatric Occupational Therapist here who yeets children into pillows for a living. It’s actually more than the vestibular system! It’s also giving them proprioception, which is the feeling of your joints and muscles / where your body is in space!
We all seek proprioceptive input, leaning against walls, pushing against the steering wheel when driving, giving your body a squeeze to wake yourself up, the list goes on! When we ‘crash’ kids into soft things like pillows or beds, we’re waking their bodies up AND calming their bodies down! In other words, getting them into this super nice zone of “just right” regulation.
When I see a child who is bouncing off the walls and can’t seem to stand still for more than a few seconds? I start wrestling with them, crashing them into pillows, giving their body the right amount of input they need to feel good and organised. And suddenly, this kid is able to sit and play attentively or do their handwriting practice. It’s amazing! If you want to know more about why the vestibular and proprioceptive systems are awesome at making your body feel good, google those two words (and sensory processing) and read through some occupational therapy websites!
Side note: As adults, does your body ever feel jittering/jiggly/wiggly/like it needs to move or calm down but you just can’t figure out why? That’s your sensory system saying Hey! I need to feel differently in order to function better! Here’s what you can do:
Jump up and down (vestibular and proprioception)
Give yourself big squeezes (proprioception)
Place your hands on a wall and do push ups (proprioception)
Do cartwheels (vestibular and proprioception)
Get someone to give you the biggest bear hug for at least 10 seconds (proprioception and social connection, also proven to help regulate your sensory system into just right zone!)
Get a drink of water and drink it through a straw OR blow bubbles into the water (way more fun!) (oral motor input and respiration)
Have a shower or a bath (tactile)
Stretch and do exercise (vestibular and proprioception)
Eat something crunchy or chewy (like chips or gum) (oral motor input)
Listen to some music that suits your mood (auditory)
etc etc etc! I’m sure you already have a strategy that your body has figured out works for you. I personally like to chew gum when I feel like i need to eat something but I’m not actually hungry and just need that chewing sensation in my jaw.
Long story short, everyone has a sensory system and we all use regulation strategies like the ones listed above to help make our body feel better. So if you ever see someone (especially kids!) fidgeting and having a hard time focusing, maybe suggest something from the list above!
Are you telling me that push ups are the cure for ADHD leg bounce?
Push-ups have always been the cure for the ADHD leg bounce but for some reason no one wants to hear it.
Here’s the new 24 hour comic I drew this year! This one is called THE KING’S FOREST. cw: blood, violence
How the fuck did you make that last panel say so many things without using any words at all that’s so fucking cool.
In case you don't know, this literally happened in Brazil. One of the first fatal victims of COVID-19 was the maid of an upper-class woman who had just arrived from Italy and knew she had the symptoms.
Happy birthday my son.
