Character sheet for a new character of mine: Rayne!
Can we take a moment to appreciate wooloo?
Spinosaurus
This art piece was for a event in an Art-Role-Play-Game (ARPG) community called Souls Between; the theme of this event was set in autumn and players had to depict their characters preparing for winter. I decided to depict my characters (Balto and Val) helping each other when collecting the autumn harvest.
Character reference design sheet for a character of mine called Alva
Here I wanted to push myself with the background, because they were always something I fell flat on when it came to skill.Ā
Through a little testing and experimenting I found that line art backgrounds were the best way for me to do it, since my style seems to rely on line art quite a bit.
Today I decided to practice some human anatomy. When learning anatomy I find it best if I try to keep the sketches as simple as possible, work less of shading and other details, and instead work on understanding the shapes that are used to make the anatomyās form.
Here I decided to play around with my art style with a mixture of sketches ranging from my own original character to some character from a game I am a fan of called Little Nightmares
For this design I used mainly warms colours such as pinks, reds and a bit of purple. To add some variety I used a cyan blue for the eyes.
Here I tried experimenting with colours. For this character I used mainly cold colours (greens and blues) and then to add a bit of variety to the colour pallet I used a colour that was closer to that of warm colours: pink. I have noticed that in my art style, whenever I am designing a character and choosing colours for them, I will always choose a single colour that is different to the rest of the characterās colour pallet and usually place that singular colour near their face. I do this because I think it helps to direct the viewersā attention to the character's face, which can be an important part of the character since it can convey their emotion.Ā
For this piece depicting one of my characters, known as Malver; I wanted to experiment with my skills in drawing different perspectives. Admittedly I was probably pushing myself when it came to trying to draw this circular room, since I remember struggling with trying to figure how the perspective was supposed to work, especially with the roomās pillars.
Instead of just giving up, however, I worked to find a solution to my problem, and my solution of all things was Minecraft.
I built the room in minecraft.
And drew over the screenshot I took.
Admittedly with this piece though, I did skip out on adding more detail to the background because my goal was to improve upon my skills in understanding perspective, and to draw the main character in this piece because Iām better at drawing different creatures and characters than I am with backgrounds.
This was a fanart piece I made for a Youtube video that debunked a cryptid creature known asĀ āThe Ropenā, a bio-luminescent pterosaur that survived the KT extinction, and the last 65 million years up until today.Ā
This illustration is actually a redraw of my previous depiction of the Ropen I drew all the way back in July of 2016, which isĀ shown just below this paragraph The piece shown up above was drawn in May of 2018.
When I first designed this character I decided to make their body a dull colour, so their bio-luminescent colours would stand out more. I wanted the glowing colours to stand out more because that was one of the main features the Ropen was famous for, so I wanted to emphasise that feature more so than the others. I decided to use green because I had seen a lot of luminous creatures glow blue, and I wanted to ropen to feel a little different compared to already existing animals.Ā I then decided to add a little variety to the characterās colour pallet, and how I normally do that is by picking a colour thatās on the opposite side of the colour wheel to the others.Ā So the character was mostly made of cold colours, so I used a warm one for their eyes. We also now know that the end of pterosaur wings were curved instead of pointed, so I added that to my design because I wanted it to be somewhat accurate.
As for the redraw, I was contempt with the Ropenās deisgn, so all I wanted to improve upon was the background.Ā
I decided instead of drawing the ropen from the side again I wanted to draw them from a different and more interesting angle. For this I roughly drew done a 2 point perspective and sketched in what I wanted.
After that, I went over in a more detailed sketch.
After I was sure everything looked right, perspective and shape wise I then went to the line art. And after the line art was done, I moved onto block colouring where I colour everything in but donāt add any detail, like shading, lighting or textures.
I decided that I wanted the scene to take place at night because then I could make the luminous colours stand out more. For this piece I wanted to practice more on lighting. I decided that the main light source would be the Ropen itself because it was closer to theĀ ācameraā than the moon was.
In real life when looking at the moon, I have noticed that it can be a very intense light source, but it is nowhere near bright enough to light up the night, unlike the sun during the day despite the moon being closer. In an attempt to replicate this effect in my own style, I decided to make the moon a different colour compared to the rest of the piece. I used cold colours in the piece because the night has cooler temperatures compared to the day. I also relied on the Ropenās warm eye colour to stop it from blending in with the background too much.
