From the Archon’s Study

[I didn’t hear about @dorianweek until quite late, but wanted to submit something! Here’s a little description I wrote and submitted for a fan project application earlier this year.]

The Archon’s grand study is alive with the whirring and buzzing of dozens of arcane gadgets. Delicate constructions spin in tightly controlled circles, drawing lines on what appears to be a map of some sort, though the parchment isn’t graced by any typical evidence of land or oceans. Another device emits steam at regular intervals, making a popping sound before a viscous green liquid drips into a crystal vial, the entire solution disappearing just when the vial seems like it might overflow. A third device quickly scribbles out messages in what appears to be a code derived from a combination of ancient Neromenian script and Tevene syntax.

Even more impressive than the completed works are the mountain of ideas in various states of progress or abandonment, resting beneath the high vaulted ceilings and intricate mahogany paneling of the room. The majority of these artifacts have purposes that can only be guessed at, though it has been said that the Archon is more than happy to give tours of his study himself, particularly to enterprising young students of the arcane.

Pages and pages of notes, references, and scholarly works line the shelves of every available surface and the size of this personal library alone would put many academic institutions to shame. Notebooks are numbered, yes, but in a scheme that has apparent meaning only to the author himself.

The study, overall, is best described as “loosely controlled chaos”. Of course, the Archon himself needs no true organization to the room; anything he needs he can simply summon with the wave of his hand.

One does wonder how he finds the time for any of it, with his personal mission of “rebuilding Tevinter in its entirety from within”, but as with all things, when there is a will, there is a way.

Written for @dorianweek with the First Impressions prompt as a bit of a play on it with the time travel quest.

it might also be worth noting i'll be sticking my hand into a dorian zine at some point in the next year with a few other people. i dont use tumblr a lot from my minrathou account but any updates about that will go there too. if people are interested!
