POE: so you DID ending up using the jacket trick i'm so proud. but this is gonna make family dinner a bit more awkward if their parents meet your parents. meatloaf may not be much of a peace offering.
POE: especially since it's apparently sO BAD

HAN: hey dad so like i gave a cute person my jacket and they accepted it and it looks good on them so i have a datemate now haha theyre called zander amazing whats for dinner is it meatloaf can it not be meatloaf thatd be great nobody likes ur meatloaf love u tho xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
POE: you really don't like the meatloaf? i feel betrayed
POE: and are you talking about the zander as in the zander that goes here?
why were they in this class? it wasn’t like they needed it. They didn’t have small dreams of being a mechanic or an engineer or anything like that. By all accounts, this class was a waste. But something drew them to it. Something had compelled them to take the elective. they flipped the paper over perhaps a bit more melodramatically than was called for, just staring at the blank space. how do you even explain that? should they even explain that? ‘see, i’ve had these weird dreams since I was a kid about people I’ve never met and places I’ve never been and I’ve always had this strange fascination with droids and weapons and literally anything that can be taken apart and put back together’ not so much. unless they wanted a one way ticket to the guidance counselor for the rest of forever.

there. that was vague enough. didn’t have them spilling their life story –or lack thereof– or their likes or interests or really anything about themself. Good. looking around, though, it seemed like most everyone else wasn’t going for vague. should they write something else, to at least look busy?

those words seemed to stick out as poe looked over the papers he collected ten minutes prior, now having given the students a little assignment of sketching out a possible droid they would want to make in his class. he had to admit, they caught him off-guard. he didn’t familiarize himself with the parenting skills of his enemies, but judging by the ren child’s sentence, they weren’t very good. at least, not ren’s.
oh, he didn’t want to think about that man. he was going to try so hard to distinguish child from parent. luckily, the other ren kid, the girl, was more concerned with the arts than the sciences. however, zander was now in his class, and there was bound to be tension between the two. and poe hated tension that was rooted in people or events that indirectly affected other people. such was a case for a child that couldn’t control what their father had done.
‘should i write something in response?’ he was leaving little notes on his students’ papers, little stuff like ‘good answer,’ ‘we’ll definitely look into that,’ ‘really? i’m good at that, too,’ and ‘glad you’re so interested.’ but zander... maybe he should leave something rather different. tongue in cheek, he found himself scratching on the paper: ‘he doesn’t have to be in here if you don’t want him to be.’ aka, let’s ignore who you parents are. poe was trying to, at least.

one moment. two. cue the disbelief. “…well, i mean sauerkraut is this weird topping that you put on things like hot dogs, but– you don’t know what a hot dog is ? at all?”
“well, we don’t really have things like those. i mean, we have dogs. but you don’t eat them. please don’t tell me eating dogs here is a regular thing.”
Zander almost kept quiet. It was funny. Zander almost did a lot of things. But that impulse to disrupt, to take any shaky sort of calm and just snap it into two, four, eight, a million tiny pieces, was far too great. “Stop pretending to tolerate me. It’s weird.” they muttered, not even sure if he’d be able to hear them. the person in the desk closest to theirs hadn’t reacted to it, so they weren’t entirely sure. Zander stared back at the paper, filling in what they knew and doodling in the boxes they either didn’t have or didn’t want to give an answer for. A lot of the boxes got covered in drawings of stormtroopers and quick doodles of various alien species, a not so subtle way for Zander to admit to knowing next to nothing about….themself. And wasn’t that pathetic.
well, there goes the ‘try to get along with him’ plan. poe stood still, looking at the side. then, his eyebrows suddenly rose. “oh! i forgot to put this on here, but maybe you guys could write on the back why you’re interested in this class? i’m just trying to get to know you. y’know, try and appeal to some of you guys? don’t want you all to be, you know, bored to death here.” maybe that would sort of try and help things with the ren child. try to empathize on something, even if it were just a class.
“I don’t want to sound pessimist or anything, but that looks like is going to blow up.” She looked up to the person in front of her uninterested.
“i know, kiddo. that’s why i’m doing it.”
“i don’t know, it seems like a lot of the magic in new york is pretty iffy. like, the most pure, magical thing in new york is if a hot dog vendor doesn’t automatically assume you want sauerkraut on every hot dog that you order.” she shrugged. “i guess i’m more towards sciences, yeah– my dads are kind of more towards science too, so…”
“-huh, that’s quite something.” he smiled and nodded kindly. “quick question - what’s sauerkraut and what’s a hotdog?”
“oh damn. seriously? that’s… kind of really sad.” but then again, addison’s heard enough stories about weird things. “do people really focus on magic ‘round here, though? i don’t, at least.”
“well,” he shrugged, “the majority. hopefully with robotics n’ the investigative arts in politics and biochem, some of you guys will like the sciences and politics more. not like magic is bad, but it’s not everybody’s cup of tea.” but he grinned. “you seem to favor the sciences a bit more then, huh?”

The hand on their shoulder? It was a pillar. It allowed Han to stop cowering under the weight of their own fears–And that voice. That tone. It was soft, so different to what their thoughts had warped this experience to be. Their fears concerning rejection had a tendency to destroy their views on others and cause Han to collapse in on themselves due to rejecting support out of the pure fear of being rejected themselves. But Poe, he was kind. Finn, he was kind. Their parents were soft and loving when it came to their children. And Han felt a root of new found self-hatred for warping them as they did form in their stomach.
And as that hatred burned so did the hot tears upon their cheeks. If kindness killed, then Han was already six feet under. And they wanted to be deeper. Arms reached out to g r a s p at Poe–their shaking limbs mirroring how they’d submit to moments of weakness as a child. If they fell and scraped their knee too deep, if they were not allowed to spent their free time in the Millennium Falcon. The young adult was merged back with their child like self as they sought any kind of comfort.
“—p l e a s e. Please don’t send me away.”
They did hear Poe in his promise, but they were so small in that moment. A rare moment. Voice quiet and shaking as they clung at their father. “Don—Don’t leave me alone. Please.” They were begging now, choking out words past the tears and the lump that had formed in their throat. “It’s…I’m scared a-and. I don’t want to end up like HIM. I don’t…wanna hurt you.”
the pilot found himself rubbing his child’s shoulder, trying to help him calm the best he could. it was one of the few memories he had of his mother before she died, her sweet, singing voice and the gentle touch that sent an overall relaxing feeling through his tiny, child body. but here he was, a grown-up, now doing the same things to his own. sure, han was a bit older than poe at the time his mother at the time, but nevertheless, his child was his child.
“if i sent you away, and something bad happened to you, i would never forgive myself.” he’d witnessed too much of general organa’s pain to ever go through that himself. he wouldn’t let it happen. “and, not to mention, i think that i would end up missing you too m u c h.”
he swallowed, his child’s fears tearing his heart apart. no father ever wanted their kid to be scared, especially in a case where they felt so vulnerable and susceptible. “nobody’s going to leave you alone. especially not me.” he could count on finn and leia to follow suit, as well. they were a family, after all. “and no child of mine will end up like -” ben solo. “-him. ...you’re not going to be the next k y l o r e n. you’ll be han. and i happen to like han, thank you very much.”
