Swan Song pt. 3: Dallan

Sparks flew from the open panel. Instinctively Dallan dropped to his knees and began connecting the faulty wires, trying to ignore the two yelling trolls behind him. The nurse had tried to grab the controls away from the highblood, and the two were now beginning to fight over control of the tiny craft as it flew ever upward. Slamming the panel shut, Dallan stood to his feet. "We're gonna be within their ship's range soon," he yelled. "Rhozari ships have really long range, we can't be here!"

"How long do we have before we're in range?" yelled the highblood, finally wresting the controls from the other. Turning to a secondary navigation panel, Dallan read out "About four seconds." Four seconds on a tiny, untested scouting ship, versus four big fighter ships. This… wasn't going to end well. Shades of the revengineer trials began to flicker in the young troll's mind. He knew what needed to be done then. This was no different. This is what a revengineer DOES, after all. It was his job to make sure the ship didn't fall apart, no matter how crazy the captaining was. It was his job to make sure they all escaped this fight.

Of course, back then he actually had someone to fight for.

Trying unsuccessfully to push thoughts from his mind, Dallan turned to another metal panel and pried it open. Quickly he began fiddling with the inner workings of the little craft, unbeknownst to the other two trolls. He had an idea, but it might just get him killed. What if the highblood got mad at him? As he turned the thought over in his head, it slowly began to dawn on him that… well, maybe it really didn't matter what happened to him. Maybe this was just how he was gonna die. Maybe no one even c– GAH!

He'd reached into the panel again without looking, slicing his hand open and pouring teal blood on the floor. Almost instantly the nurse was upon him, grabbing his wrist roughly with one hand and spreading the fingers of the other. Nimbly she began sewing the cut closed as Dallan watched in amazement. 

"You two might want to hold on…" the voice of the highblood came. Dallan turned to look at the viewscreen just in time to see the little ship hurtling toward one of the fighters. And as horrible luck would have it, it was the one fighter that hadn't dropped its bomb yet.

At least, it hadn't until now.

"TURN! TURN!" screamed Dallan, running to the highblood and shoving the controls. But it was too late, and the bomb slammed full-force into the tiny craft, engulfing it in flames and black smoke, rendering it invisible from the planet's surface.

Good thing Dallan had boosted those shields.

"Why won't my weapons work?" yelled the highblood, whirling around and turning on Dallan. "It says energy weapons are at 5%. Fix it. NOW."

Dallan's hands balled into fists. "No."

"…what did you say to me?"

"I said NO! I cut weapon power and put it in shields! We would have died!"

"We're being fired on!" yelled the nurse, reading the screens. "It says 'Hull integrity: 25 percent.' Dallan… that's bad, isn't it?"

For a moment, the three trolls stood there in that small room, looking at each other.

The graceful, arrogant dancer, his breath short and his face full of anger.

The sharp-minded surgeon, her mind only on comforting the hurting, even now.

And Dallan. The hopeful tinkerer who was out of ideas.

Except one.

"We're all going to die here," he said quietly. We're all going to die, unless…" His voice trailed off, his eyes went floorward, and he began to shake. "Unless what? You can tell us." The soft voice of the nurse came at just the right time, and Dallan looked up to see her hand fall lightly on his shoulder. "But you have to tell us now, okay?"

Dallan took a deep breath and spoke, his voice as shaky as he was. "I… I installed the hyperdrive this morning. W-we can try it. It's the only way out now."

"Do it!" the highblood rushed over, grabbing Dallan by the shoulders. Where is it? Tears began to form up in Dallan's eyes. "We might not come back."

Another moment of silence fell, seconds before the little ship was rocked by another impact. "11 percent!" the nurse yelled! "Dallan… it's up to you."

Slowly, Dallan walked to a small touchscreen panel and began entering commands. A large button on the panel began to glow a bright, piercing red.

"DO IT!"

"Don't rush him!"

"We have to! There's no time!"

"It's HIS choice!"

Dallan's tears were covering his vision, his eyes now seeing only in vague tints of teal. And looking down, shades of bright, beautiful red broke through the light blue veil. Old memories began to play in his mind as he looked down. A familiar voice now began dancing in his mind.

"Be careful, okay?" the voice said softly.

"I'm sorry," he choked out, before slamming his hand on the button.

And everything went quiet.

Swan Song pt. 2: Sissel

"Will you get back in here and help me already?!" Sissel's frustration with her "leader" hadn't been as apparent as it could have been, as she was well-used to making nice with highbloods. But this guy was proving to be too much altogether. Sure, he was highly organized and well thought-out, but what a pompous, arrogant ass he was! Here was a troll he was assigned to watch over and protect… dying on a table in front of him! But did he care? Oh, of course not. All he cared about was his precious castes and if–

The girl took a deep breath and shook her head. She didn't need any more stress than she'd already had, after all. This seadweller had ordered (ha ha) that all injured parties in the team should check in with him first, so their absence could be noted, but after a troll had accidentally sliced the tip of his finger off, she'd begun bypassing the needless runaround and simply patching them on the spot. She figured he'd be none the wiser, but sneaking around was stressful– even more so since she wasn't using her powers to operate. 

Carefully, she sliced the dying yellowblood's chest open with her scalpel. "Can you hold him open?" Slowly pulling open the chest cavity, she gestured toward the nearby tealblood. "I know it's a bit messy, but–" Before she could finish the sentence, he'd moved to the body and was now pulling the incision open with a blank look on his face. "Oh… thank you, Dallan."

"Where is the defense force? Why aren't we launching early? I should be up there…" grunted the seadweller, still gazing skyward. There's no– oh, FUCK." A loud explosion shook the small craft at that moment. and blood spilled from the body of the injured troll. "HELP ME!" Sissel yelled, now desperate. "He's going to… oh fuck this." Angrily dropping the scalpel on the table, she spread her fingers over the body. Thin, blue psychic tendrils shot from her fingers and attached themselves inside. Quickly, she began to work.

"That's…" The seadweller had finally returned to the table, seen the psychic strings, and was now staring at Sissel with a mixture of realization and anger.

Sissel groaned. It had taken him long enough to figure it out.

Of course she knew that he was the mysterious Subjugglator all along. She'd figured it out the moment she'd laid eyes on him and seen his movements. She didn't bear any ill will against him any more, but she'd been waiting for the moment when he'd recognize her. Since their first confrontation had been at night, she'd figured he wouldn't make the realization until he saw her powers (which was the real reason all of her surgeries were in secret.) But now a life was on the line. All of that didn't matter.

"Nice to see you again. Now help me. I need you to–"

"I should strangle you right here, you…" The now-furious violetblood took two aggressive steps forward… before stopping in his tracks. The hollowed out end of a metal staff was pointed at his chest, held in one hand by the tealblood, his shaking finger on the weapon's trigger.

"You wouldn't dare," snarled the noble.

"…I don't know if I would," responded the engineer. 

"I don't have time to find out!" barked Sissel. "He is going to die! Doesn't that mean anything to you?"

Another explosion, this time closer. The craft jumped, spilling the body to the floor. Regaining her composure, she ran to the body and put her fingers softly to his neck. Slowly, she looked up at her leader. "He's dead. He's dead, you brine-sucking maggot-infested hell-forsaken filthy excuse for a captain..."

But before he could reply, one more explosion rocked the ship, throwing them to the ground. Scrambling up to his feet, the seadweller ran to the door, jerked it closed, and locked it.

"No, stop! What are you doing?" screamed the tealblood.

"I'm not going to die down here with you two!" he bellowed back, his hands shooting to the craft's controls.

"You're not." Sissel took a step forward. "If you do what I think you're going to do I'll haul your stomach out through your mouth, you prick."

But it was too late. He'd already began pressing specific combinations of the buttons, and in the next second, the small craft had taken off, flying into atmospheric combat.

Swan Song pt. 1: Yeddes

"One for the scrapbook," Yeddes remarked, reading the article (or, more accurately, the third paragraph of the article) for the fifth time. "And they even kept in the line about the Empress' 'infinite wisdom and beauty!' Ah, if that doesn't get me into her good graces... say, do you know if the Empress reads the papers?"

The seadweller turned his attention to the other troll aboard the small, grounded spacecraft. The bespectacled tealblood glanced up from his work and gave a halfhearted shrug before squatting back down and resuming his repairs.

"You're a talkative one, aren't you?" Yeddes strolled up to the other troll and peered down at the mess of wires and metal he was handling. "What exactly are you working on, there?" Without looking back up, the tealblood mumbled something about "faulty warp drive" and jabbed into an open panel with his pliers. A cascade of sparks flew out.

"You know..." Yeddes squatted down next to the little engineer, aware that his company wasn't wanted and not caring one bit. "...you're technically– very technically, mind you– a highblood. What exactly do you think that means?" The other troll looked up again, and again, did nothing but shrug.

"It means, my comrade, that you have to set an example. The pressure is on me, as a noble, to set the example of leadership and command for you, but you have six caste levels beneath you that you are directly responsible for. You seem to do good work, but if you are to be a leader over lethargic masses that sit below you, you're going to have to take charge!"

The tealblood didn't seem to be listening.

"Have you wondered why most of the trolls working on this project are highbloods?" Yeddes continued, now beginning to feel a little inspired himself. It's because you can't trust lowbloods and mutants." The tealblood made a noticeable face at the last sentence. Turning his head, he opened his mouth to say something, but his eyes shifted away and in the next moment he was back to his work. "Yes you can," he mumbled.

The seadweller let out a low sigh. "I bet you have lowblood friends, don't you? You'll learn." With that, he stood up to leave.

"The nurse is nice. She's a lowblood."

Yeddes groaned out loud at that. "That ugly little lazy bitch? Every time I look at her she's got her nose in some papers or something. The other nurses seem to be busy patching up their engineering team, but she–"

"She's not patching me up because I don't need it. She gave me some balm stuff for some old cuts I had and that's it."

"And the rest of our engineers? Why isn't she looking after them?"

The tealblood set his pliers down and stood up, looking at the screens and panels that lined the craft's wall in front of him. "They didn't recruit any other engineers for this team. Said I was enough."

Yeddes' eyebrows went up at that. Each of the worksites had been assigned ten teams of engineers, builders and nurses, with one leader to watch over and direct them. Yeddes had already received compliments on the way he'd organized and directed the build team (it was why they'd picked him to interview for the paper,) but he'd wondered what had happened to the engineers. Each team was supposed to have eight. If this kid was the only one assigned… either someone in logistics was slipping, or he was really something special.

"Carry on, then. But remember: You're a leader here. You have to set an ex–WHOA!"

The oliveblooded nurse had rushed in to the small craft carrying a small yellowblood boy in her arms. She'd knocked Yeddes out of the way and tossed the boy up on a table next to him. "Med tent's full. This is the nearest enclosure."

Yeddes composed himself and glared at the girl with disgust. Filthy little piece of shit. She probably fund a corpse somewhere and dragged it in to try and look busy. She couldn't fool him. Though something about her… something about her was familiar.

"He's dying," she spat out. She ripped the yellowblood's shirt off, revealing a bloody mess underneath. Carefully she held her hands over the chest, bent her fingers slightly… and suddenly sighed and dropped her hands to the medkit at her side. "Almost forgot. Ugh, normal tools are so slow. Dallan, I need your hand here."

The tealblood approached quickly, surprised at being called by name. Yeddes looked on, still suspicious of the girl in front of him. She had to be up to something.

"What did you do to this troll?" he asked sharply.

The nurse looked up, her face now twisted with fury. "We're under attack, you idiot. The Rhozari got here early. They're targeting the worksites. We're first."

Yeddes blinked in disbelief. Turning to the door, he paced outside and looked up at the sky. Flying around within the atmosphere were four bomber ships, three of which seemed to be armed.

"…fuck."

Empress' Hyperspace Project Continues

Today marks the beginning of the second week in the Empress' much-discussed hyperspace project, and tensions are beginning to run visibly high at each of the six worksites stationed across the planet. As announced one month ago by Royal Herald Network, the project aims to create a fleet of small, battle-ready scout-ships, each capable of making hyperspace-speed jumps, thus allowing for what the Empress' office is calling "the ultimate battle advantage."

Thoughts of battle are proving to be timely, as insurgents from the recently subjugated Rhozari planet are closing in on Alternia with a larger-than-expected fleet. Experts predict their arrival shortly, but the hyperspace build crew doesn't seem to be worried.

"This is the finest fleet in the universe," said Yeddes Agrona, one of the young trolls selected to oversee one of the small build teams. Even the ships we're testing now could obliterate the finest crafts the Rhozari have to offer. We've offered to let the Royal fleet have a rest while we handle the fighting, but the Empress, in her infinite wisdom and beauty, has declined our offer. But mark my words: These ships will be done on-schedule."

Hyperspace is defined as a "faster-than-light travel speed achieved through the use of sophisticated warp engines." It comes as no surprise that Alternia is at the forefront of this technology, but in its experimental state, only time will tell if it will be a safe method of transportation for the public, let alone the Alternian military.
